Forget Fatal Frame and Silent Hill - Deadly Creatures is the scariest damn video game I've ever seen, and it's only just been announced. THQ and Rainbow Studios are collaborating on this Wii monstrosity, an adventure game that follows the story of a disgusting scorpion and terrifying tarantula as they struggle to survive in a world filled with even deadlier creatures, like Gila monsters, tarantula wasps, and man. I will be staying far far away from this game too, but not because of my arachnophobia, but because of the fact that this game looks like it was made by a 5 years old boy...
Here was the pitch for the game,
Game Designer: "We got this exiting new franchise we have been working on, it is a mulitplayer and single player game where you form teams with your friends and attempt to battle other clans for control of territories online, your clan or group will be able to build weapons together using the game's weapon forge function, which will load the weapons online to the central server and make them available for download or purchase by other clans if the weapon becomes widely accepted over time. The territories are differentiated and will span from all sorts of different levels such as snow, or the mountains, grasslands, the center of an abandonned city and a rainforest with weather effects. Vehichles can be used to crush your opponents team and to break down barriers built by the other team, we will be adding tanks and jeeps, motorcycles ect. You can customize the look of your charachter so that your team will remember it is you playing. We will add downloadable maps and weapons as real time progresses outside the game world!"

I just watched an MST3K episode last night: "The Giant Spider Invasion." TERRIBLE movie and it still freaked me out.
But maybe playing as a spider will help people get over their fear. But probably not...

Game looks sick. Not sure if the trailer is actual ingame or cut scenes but the game at this point looks nice. It's pretty much a guaranteed rental for me at this point. I'm going to be looking forward to initial impressions on this.
I agree with all the assesments of people saying at least THQ IS TRYING. Nice to see something different. I mean one of 3 things could happen.
1.It could suck
2.It could be mediocre
3. It could be good

This is certainly an original concept, I love it! I hope it's executed just as well but I fear that it's sales won't do so well. It seems almost anyone I talk to is deathly afraid of spiders if not snakes, scorpions, etc. Never been bugged (haha, pun was unintentional) terribly by insects and creepy-crawlies myself but I'm sure this is one to that'll under my skin.
I'll probably show it off to my sister just to mess with her though.

@ph15h: I myself wouldn't want to hold an actual spider, but seeing them on TV, in videogames, or books doesn't frighten me at all. I did have a cute pet scarab beetle years ago though so not all arthropods frighten me.

@ShaggE: I noticed that blackwidows look for dark and quiet corners generally where people dont bother them, and once they put their web they stay there and dont roam around, that why i decided to let them and it has worked very well...

@TOCATL: I'm thinking about doing that too, that way I can get a feel for taking care of a spider before spending 30-40 bucks on it's larger brethren and making a rookie mistake. (granted, house spiders live differently, but I'd like to have at least some kind of experience beforehand)
@holysocks: Apparently you've never heard of arachnaphobia. It has nothing to do with "crying like little girls lolol i r a macho", it's just a common fear that most people have.

Also, loving the unrealistic sounds the bugs make when they get hit. They were certainly dead silent when I watched the Japanese bug fights clips. Then again, it's just a game.

There was a similar game (not nearly as creepy) on PS1 I think. I remember having a demo of it at some point a while back. You were a spider and had to survive.

Atmospheric insect battle simulator eh? I know this isn't going to be an interactive nature show or anything, but if they could base the structure of the gameplay around the actual habits and routines of the real thing it could be an effective way of sneaking education into visceral entertainment.
That said... that scorpion causes a surprising amount of bone crushing noises when body slamming it's opponents.
