Wipeout Pulse Boosts To PSPs
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 8:40 AM on February 13, 2008
The follow-up to PSP racer Wipeout Pure arrives in North America today, says the official PlayStation blog. Wipeout Pulse—aka wipEout PULSE, if you're a capitalisation fetishist—looks to not just toss out a new collection of tracks and pretty lights, it brings proper infrastructure online racing to the PSP, with the promise of downloadable content in the future. Europeans are already enjoying Wipeout Pulse DLC, meaning it can't be too far off.
I just checked the United States version of the PC PlayStation Store and didn't see Pulse turn up. While you wait, make sure to get caught up on the newest Wipeout courtesy of Liverpudlian producer Paul Tweedle's blog.

@Fonzy: That was the first thing I downloaded from the PC store, and coincidentially the first game I ever played on my first PlayStation. Either that or Allied General.
Good times.

I've been meaning to buy a PSP, if not for the emulation. Oh and I've quite a few games to get for it. I just need money..

@Kaneda: Yeah, I'm definitely still anxious for it... I don't think that will change.
And thanks about UTIII. I gotta say though... the difference between 150 and whatever i'm at right now (twenty something last i looked) is extremely minimal. 150 is still upper 1%... actually upper .2%. The margin for error on "rank" is also pretty wide: it really comes down more to ping/latency, map, modes, and some luck once you break top 500 or so. I'm sure you'll pass me soon enough... either that or I'll screw my ranking up myself. :D

@dv8godd: No kidding. Last time I heard something about a release date it said "January". That would have been for Europe I suppose. Anyway, it's now mid February and even Europe didn't get it yet. The guys in charge are probably at the pub way more often than they should.
The latest screens of the game make me want to keep waiting though. All hope is not lost.
PS: Congrats on your UT3 ranking, by the way. Mine seems stuck at around 150th. It'll have to stay that way until I have more free time this spring. I hope I can catch you then! Probably not though!

Because of the two (five, really) Wipeout games available for it, I really need to just stop stalling and get a damn PSP already.

I'd love to pick this up but I'm afraid I blew my game money for the time being on Devil May Cry 4 and Professor Layton.

@Kaneda: Waiting sucks. And it's getting painful in this case. I'm not even sure they have announced a date "range" yet.

I've got the biggest boner for this game. Its honestly the best Wipeout so far and really pushes the PSP BUT theyre charging for the dlc now, which is a fucking liberty if you ask me, esp seeing as it was free with Pure.
Theyre totally taking advantage of all the loyal Wipeout fans out there and they should be ashamed.
The sluts.

@Masterpain22:
you have to pay for extra content… and its quite steep. £3·49 for 1 vehicle and 2 tracks. Not really worth it, the fact you only get a normal OR reverse of a track seems to suggest that other packs will sell the same tracks to enable the opposite direction. Hopefully something close to the omega pack will be released later on; that was worth paying for.

@Zookey, @sUKi: Wikipedia differs with other historical accounts on this... it seems to be, at once, detailed on certain areas and completely oblivious to others. :/ It makes no mention of the Eidos acquisition for some reason, and fails to mention the US division getting rolled into 989. I think the original main office in Liverpool is what is today considered Liverpool Studio... but the other European offices were supposed to have been sold to Eidos and the US section got rolled into Sony America (989).
Either way... I wouldn't consider them simply operating as-was under the new name. Of the original team, I think only Garvan Corbett is still around at SCEE. He's the only name I've seen on a Wipeout since the end of Psygnosis, anyway. If anything, it's more likely that Sony simply phased out the Psygnosis brand and replaced it with Liverpool Studio to fit their own naming conventions within SCEE, SCEA, etc after shifting bodies all around.
Eugene Evans is at SCEA, Colin Rushby was at Acclaim (RIP) for a while, Jonathan Ellis went to Activision, other originals I'm not sure of. I know Hetherington, who was made into some kind of director at SCEE, is now chairman of Real Time Worlds (Crackdown), which he formed with guys from Rockstar and Nintendo. The rest of the core original team haven't had their names on anything I remember in a long time.

@dv8godd: Right. I've been waiting for that Wipeout HD on the PSN since they first talked about it about 300 years ago.
I still play Pure on PSP sometimes, hoping it will make the wait easier.

Any word if there will be free downloadable content like there was for Wipeout Pure? Or how many tracks are already available in the game compared to the last game?
There is a review posted already on 1up, and I'm sold. But I must say that with God of War coming up soon I actually have to figure out which great game to pick up now for my psp and the one I'll have to wait until later.

Wipeout Pure is awesome and I definitely want to pick this up, but I'll probably wait for a bit. I would really prefer to get it on the PSN store as that's how I got pure and it was really nice not having to cart around the UMD for it

I won't be getting this - I simply have too much else to play. However, I still highly recommend it. They did a FANTASTIC job with the first one, and ENDLESS SUPPORT for that game. They kept releasing new tracks and new models without fail.
You won't be disappointed, I'm sure they'll do the same thing with this one!

You forgot something dude!
go to www.wipeout-game.com and sign in with your PSN ID (Pulse is the first PSP game to use the PSN) and you can make your own paint jobs for the racing craft that will be downloaded to your PSP via the PSN when you play the game! I already made one paint job (looks like crap, but oh well!) so I have one to download tomorrow.
Also--I don't think it will release in the PS Store right away--I think initially it is a brick-and-mortar release only---arrives at stores tomorrow according to my local GameStop
BTW Fonzy---Psygnosis was bought by Sony back in the day--same people but they call themselves SCEE Liverpool Studio now :-)

@Fonzy: The European branch was bought by Eidos in 98 and the US branch got rolled into Sony's 989 Studios. The name stopped appearing soon after.

Give me an online PS3 Wipeout, please. The first PSP one was really good, and I'm sure this is too... but seriously: PS3 version already, even if it's just a quick re-hash with some updated graphics and online play.
