Wireless GHIII Guitars Dated, Priced
Posted by Mike Fahey at 3:40 AM on February 1, 2008
Since Guitar Hero III's launch back in October, I have been on a quest for standalone wireless guitar controllers. Having purchased the game by itself thinking I would be satisfied playing while tethered to my Xbox 360, the videos of GH fans jumping off furniture soon swayed me to the wireless cause. My quest hit a snag when I realised the wireless controllers weren't out yet, but Activision promised they would be on the shelves in early 2008, and now they deliver on said promise. March is the month in which retailers will begin receiving shiny new standalone wireless guitar controllers for Guitar Hero III, with the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions running $69, and the Wiimote-embedded Wii version $US 10 cheaper at $US 59. Then shortly after we all run out to snag ours, Activision will no doubt reveal all new guitars for GHIV that will make us feel like idiots for buying these. Woot!

Over here (Australia) we have had the wireless guitar for 360 sold seperate from the game since day one. I got GH3 for a birthday present without the guitar so I had to go buy the guitar from GAME. If your desperate import one from over here.

What about the Nyko one for the Wii? I think it would be nice to have different looking guitars. Anyone know the price and release date of the Nyko one?

It's about time. Now I just need to find out what the GHIV controller will look like to see if I should wait. That's if GHIV comes out on the Wii, that is.
And, yeah, $60 is a bit much for the wiimote shell...but it's a game the wife will definitely play with me, so therefore is an instant purchase. She's been asking ever since GHIII was released for a second controller so we can co-op.

@DarkTravesty: Oh, that has nothing to do with it. The current guitars are wired... Wired! and the Strat just does not work, and it supposedly follows open controller standards.
There is nothing that could prevent them from doing it. They are just evil.

i knew i would hate GHIII from the beginning i loved and still GHII but 3 just is not fun but yet still i was at the midnight launch after i got about 300 achivements i just said i would sell the game and sell the guitar if rock band does not support it.
the next week best buy got their displays and i came in with all the equipment (they had 1 drum kit 1 guitar and 1 mic, but no controller) so i kept bringing a controller and the guitar it worked YAY and so i kept it but why wait if you want game stores (gamecrazy and gamestop) will give 30 dollars for just the game (10 bonus if you have the mvp thing)so 33 dollars of tax-free store credit back you make 3 dollars for buying the bundle and sell the game back...no waiting!

Speaking mainly for the PS2, the wireless guitar is difficult to use, it could be just the guitar I have but I've had to exchange the guitar twice because of problems and the newest one is still buggy. So I actually enjoy using my GH 1 guitar more then the wireless stuff.

I bet you $1 that Activision will update GHIII for Xbox and make it so these wireless will only work with their game.

After Activision's behavior over Rock Band drivers, I've stopped investing in Guitar Hero DLC or hardware. I've got my Xplorer that works just as well and doesn't suffer from the "neck wobble" that the GH3 guitars get.

I was hoping they'd be less. :( I have friends who aren't into Guitar Hero, and I was hoping to get them to try co-op with me, but I'm not willing to take a $60 gamble.

I may be a minority on this, but I don't want wireless guitars. Just means more batteries. AND I can't play on my brother in-law's PS2 wirelessly because the guitar included with GH3 constantly cuts out of having a signal. I'm down with the wires, just make sure they are long. That goes for all controllers. The wiimote seems like the only one that would maybe be hindered by having wires. Other then that, don't fix what ain't broke.

@Cagny: Activision is the only one holding things up on that end, and so far they've been blocking.

@Erwos:
The "pack-in" PS3 version uses a dongle. I don't know if these stand-alone ones will be BT or not.

Does the PS3 version require a dongle, or is it really Bluetooth?

The Wii bundle and standalone guitar are both $10 less than their 360/PS3 counterparts. So it would make sense that the price difference of the bundle is because of the Wii remote being in the guitar. But since games are usually $10 less on the Wii, shouldn't the price difference of the bundle be $20? $10 for the guitar and $10 for the game?

So you pay $30 more for the guitar than you would with the bundle. Is this Activision's tax on people who might dare to use their controllers for Rock Band? Glad I finally found a bundle.

@Cagny: Not until Harmonix releases a patch for the PS3 version of Rock Band, which would mean that them and Activision would have to come to some sort of agreement.

$60 is too high for a shell. It is actually just a classic controller molded into the form of a guitar. It requires a $40 Wiimote to function...doesn't really have any of it's own capabilities.
This thing shouldn't cost more than $40.

Too many guitars... I got 3 ps2 SGs, 1 360 rockband Strat, and 1 360 Les Paul. I'm beginning to feel like some faux guitar collector. "The 2007 Les Paul is great but the 2006 Explorer is not without it's own charm. Now lets go look at my collection classic SGs."

really excited to get one of these. i, unfortunately, have two wired x-plorers and a rock band guitar that feels like i may break it in half at any moment.
thus, i will definitely be picking one of these up!

Cool, buying this will allow me to end one of my two Xplorers life in true rock-god fashion.
Naturally with safety goggles, we don't want to lose an eye by destroying a plastic guitar, that would be totally uncool.

@presto117: If you strum while playing GH or RB, the RB controller is just fine. As my girlfriend found out though, any method other than strumming will cause some problems for unadjusted players on the RB guitar.
So yes, it is user preference and the ability to adjust.

@Randroid: it hurts me to sue the Rock Band guitar. i can barely play on it without messing up constantly, so i use the GH3 controller.
but my friend loves the RB controller, so it's just a matter of opinion.

I paid $88 CAD for the WalMart GH3 bundle (with xplorer).
Normal retail price is $110.
$88 + $69 = $157
This means that, in effect, I paid $47 for the xplorer, which isn't that bad. This price of $69 for the wireless guitar seems about right to me.

@mindinrewind: Sorry, I meant the current RB guitars. They are wired, open standard, yet they made it so it would not work in GHIII. What would stop them from changing configurations so their new wireless Les Paul would not work in RB?

@Pr1vate_D0nut:
i mean i have played guitar hero a few times. its freaking awsome. i have never played the guitar ,but my couson got this game and i play it ever day. it helped me so much to learn the basics of the guitar. for christmas this year i got a guitar!!! i call her ... the electric blue beam! her short name is julez. i spend all my time with her. i learned how to play some licoln park songs and ac dc. i like base better then electric of acoustic. i asked my mom for an acoustic on for tmy birthday soon, i think ill name him woody. maybe grandma will get me a leather strap with my name onn it......... yaaa that would be sweet.i mean im not the greatest at playing the guitar, but hopefully me and my friends will start a garage band soon. me and my friends have guitar hero night every thursday. tonight im gonna try the expert level, see how i do. its almost been a year since i started base. i hope to keep pursuing my guitar playing tactics. hope u all are doing great! ill let u know how that expert game goes tonight!! see yall
