Posted by Michael McWhertor at 11:45 AM on February 5, 2008
This Wednesday, connected Xbox 360 owners will be able to try their hand at a twist on the match-three puzzle game staple with Poker Smash. In addition to the standard rows and columns of three-of-a-kind, Poker Smash adds hands like straights and flushes to the mix. It's arriving in the wee hours for 800 Microsoft Points.
Joining Poker Smash on XBLA this week is a free update for the already released Crystal Quest that will appeal to fans of high scores and re-downloading things. Official word on all this Xbox Live Arcade business is post jump.
Puzzle with a Poker Twist - "Poker Smash" Launches on Xbox LIVE Arcade this Wednesday along with a Free Gameplay Update for "Crystal Quest"
Newcomer Void Star Creations, an Independent developer based in South Carolina, takes the puzzle game genre to a whole new level with "Poker Smash," an action packed puzzler with a poker twist! In "Poker Smash," players rush to clear rows of cards by arranging them into poker hands. To keep things interesting "Poker Smash" offers card-blasting bombs and a super slow-motion trigger for players caught in a bind.
The game features over 30 minutes of original music set against stunning visuals, and contains seven unique game modes, including: action, timed, puzzle, practice, custom playlist, split screen head-to-head and multiplayer tournaments. Casual and hardcore gamers alike won't want to miss this highly polished addition to Xbox LIVE Arcade.
For the Achievement junkies, "Poker Smash" contains 12 Achievements with a total of 200 points, including: "Score of the Gods," which requires gamers to reach 1,000,000 points; "The Thinker," which requires gamers to unlock all puzzle groups; and "Pack Rat," which is awarded after gamers unlock all 11 in-game themes.
To celebrate the launch of "Poker Smash" on Xbox LIVE Arcade, players will have the opportunity to participate in the "Poker Smash" Play & Win Sweepstakes, where one lucky grand prize winner will receive an Xbox 360 Elite console! Plus, four other winners will be selected to receive Microsoft Point cards. To be automatically entered into the sweepstakes, simply download and play the full or trial version of "Poker Smash" from Wednesday, February 6 at 8:00 a.m. GMT (12:00 a.m. PST on Tuesday, February 5) through Thursday, February 14 at 7:59 a.m. (11:59 p.m. PST on Wednesday, February 13). This sweepstakes is available in the US and Canada only. For complete sweepstakes rules, please visit:

"Poker Smash" will be available worldwide this Wednesday, February 6 at 9:00 a.m. GMT (1:00 a.m. PST) for 800 Microsoft Points and is rated E for Everyone by the ESRB. For more details on "Poker Smash" please visit:

Additionally, the Xbox LIVE Arcade classic "Crystal Quest" will receive a free gameplay update this week. Developer Stainless Games has added a fresh twist to the puzzle action by incorporating a score multiplier. This update will make the game slicker and faster than before and opens up the possibility of even higher scores!
The score multiplier increases every time gamers pick up a crystal, but failing to pick up a crystal or getting zapped negates the multiplier. To keep a level playing field, old Leaderboards will be retired after the update, but will still be viewable for posterity's sake. The update also includes improvements to downloadable content, which is part of Stainless Games' ongoing commitment to constantly improve the player experience. This game is Primella, or Gun Dealer '94. But this one probably doesn't have boobs in it like those did.
I bet the music isn't as good either.

They were talking really enthusiastically about Poker Smash on 1up Yours a few weeks ago. I'll definitely download the trial at the very least.

@Destrudo: I recall some guy whos stationed in Italy saying the same thing reciently, cept all the movies that he was able to watch before he cant now.
Or something like that, so it looks like the region locking is now in effect.
WTF, do they not want folks here to try shit out? How the hell else do they expect hype to grow when folks cant get demos from overseas. Since it takes them fucking forever at times to bring out some demos here, others dont even arrive at all.

Poker Smash looks totally awesome. Can't wait to download the demo and give it a shot.
@Destrudo: You shouldn't. The PS3 is specifically designed to be region free, so worrying about being unable to download Japanese demos from America is way, way down on my list.

@Witzbold:
ok... the new moto could be "free online, free to play, free of locks"
seriously, I don't really know if sony will do that with the incursion of the sony movies to the PSN

For some reason I see a green, large-muscled biped hitting the ground repeatedly with his oversized fists while a speech bubble informs us that he is, indeed, playing poker.

I see what you did there.

Definitely the most popular game in history to feature "Smash" in the title.

@Witzbold:
I hope I won't see PSN following suit anytime soon. XBL isn't as big a priority for me as getting those Japanese PS3 demos early.

Ok, I must be working too much because I could have sworn that Ms was advertising this on my 360 over the weekend when I turned it on to play some Rez.
Anyways, I always enjoy the falling blocks games so I bet Poker Smash will be fun. ^_^

This looks pretty cool!
Btw Ive just noticed XBL is doing something new in a bad way.
I cant download demos using my US account anymore from Japan.
They finally seemed to have put up the region blocking now. :x

Ah yes, more $10 (800 point) arcade games. I guess this is the norm. Since we don't see $5 (400 point) games anymore. It was due time for the prices to be higher and stick.
So shocking!

Live has had region blocking for quite some time now. I am stationed in Japan and the entire time i have had problems with things. Even trying to get an FPO AP address into the system for my gold account.

And here I was going to mention Gun Dealer, but someone beat me to it. That game was actually quite fun -- good enough to play in mixed company despite the 16-color nudity.
Though I really begin to wonder about all these live arcade remakes. Why rip off old games when you could actually make something new? We certainly haven't exhausted the all the potential gameplay out there yet. Shouldn't live be the kind of microcontent distribution system which fosters creativity, instead of foisting endless remakes and re-releases? Instead we get a crushing pile of repeat-ware -- heck, there are probably perfectly creative people out there right now working hard to do something that's already been done just so they can sell it again.
I hate to be didactic, but, folks, don't let industry sell you old ideas. If it isn't creative, don't buy it. (Go play the original instead.)
