Zero Punctuation Previews Going To X-Play
Posted by Mark Wilson at 4:40 AM on February 12, 2008
Wow Yahtzee, you've done the impossible. You have a television program running previews of a freaking 3-minute review. Yeah, did you hear? X-Play will be running a snippet of your upcoming Zero Punctuations every Tuesday night. And including the clip's introduction, run time, and accompanying in-show bumpers, we wouldn't be surprised if this Tuesday teaser took just as long as your actual Wednesday review.
It's ludicrous media piggybacking, but we don't blame you...pending that you sleep on a big pile of greenbacks after a hard day's work.
"X-Play" to Feature World Premieres of New "Zero Punctuation" VideosWith Weekly Sneak Previews
Previews of The Escapist Magazine's Popular Web Video Series Debut on "X-Play" Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 8 pm
LOS ANGELES, February 11, 2008 - "Zero Punctuation" is coming to "X-Play," giving viewers of the most-watched video game show on television an exclusive sneak peek at each new episode of the Web's most popular video game review series. Beginning Tuesday, February 12, short previews of the wildly popular videos from creator Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw and The Escapist magazine will become an ongoing "X-Play" feature. Previews of "Zero Punctuation" videos will premiere exclusively on "X-Play" every Tuesday evening, before the Wednesday premiere of the full, uncut reviews at www.escapistmagazine.com, which will remain the series' online home. "Zero Punctuation" makes its world broadcast premiere on "X-Play," February 12, 2008 at 8 pm ET/PT, only on G4.
"Zero Punctuation" has become one of the video game world's most popular and infamous sources of criticism, unleashing reviews that combine humor and scathing insight with uproarious results. Each review combines deceptively simple animation with breathlessly blunt language, mercilessly mocking the weakest points in even the most critically acclaimed games.
"Every game has its faults, even the truly great ones," said Morgan Webb, host of "X-Play." "Nothing is funnier than seeing the mighty mocked."
"I was already really excited about the new 'X-Play' format," said Adam Sessler, host of "X-Play." "Now I can barely contain myself. We're dedicated to giving gaming fans what they want and we know they want 'Zero Punctuation.'"
"'Zero Punctuation' is game reviewing like it's never been done before," said Russ Pitts, Acquisitions and Production Manager at The Escapist. "We're pleased to share the schizophrenia with 'X-Play's' audience."
The "Zero Punctuation" previews are the newest addition to the updated "X-Play" format, which features a daily comprehensive overview of video game news and culture, in addition to the brutally honest reviews for which the show is known. Every weeknight at 8 pm, new, half-hour episodes of "X-Play" will give viewers a comprehensive update on each day's videogame-related developments, along with a wide range of new features, including behind-the-scenes sneak peeks at games in development; interviews with industry luminaries; live, hands-on demonstrations of games before they hit store shelves; and in-depth analysis of the latest videogame trends. A couple of you pointed out how crappy G4 is with all the Cops/Cheaters/Ninja Warrior shenanigans it has going on. I agree. They show WAY too much of that stuff. G4 was meant to be a video game and tech channel. They've stooped to the level of Spike TV in my opinion. Not that Spike started out as a gaming channel, but they show arguably the same amount of original video game related content.
Anyway, back on topic. I think that this is somewhat ridiculous. However, I guess his videos can use all the promotion they can get.

Good stuff, Mr. C could use the exposure, and G4 could use a show that doesn't suck.
Given Yahtzee just went and did what G4 has been failing at since they launched, I'm glad to see their willing to prostrate themselves any way they can to get a shot at his sweet, scary man-love.

@Asper:
You just put into words what I've thought of the show since the change. It just isn't X-Play anymore. Adam and Morgan aren't themselves, rarely interact and there's almost no spontaneity. You can't have a review, interview or preview without the annoying "live chat" going on on the side, which essentially consists of 15 year olds making fart jokes. When Extended Play went to X-Play and they added Morgan it still felt like X-Play. This was a complete overhaul and it was for the worse. I wonder how the ratings have held up? At least ZP will bring a little life and humor back to the show, even if previewing a 2 or 3 minute review is absolutely ridiculous.

That's kind of it, though, really. If you look at the way its set up now, I don't see it as exactly for the "Xtreme!" group. It appears to be going for the more legit, gaming/news angle than for an "XTREME DEW GAMER CHALLENGE!" angle, and I like that. It feels much more professional now than it did before, and it helps that Adam and Morgan both appear to dress more maturely now than they did before. lol I just with they didn't try to cram everything into tiny segments on the half hour show. With the time slots now for each part, they really CAN'T get much "intelligent discussion" in. If the time were extended on the show, I think it would make for a much better gaming experience than what it is now. But as for the new show in general, I think its a trend in the right direction.
As for the skits, yeah, I think they went WAY over board previously on the skit things, although...for me in particular...I rather got a kick out of the X-play Musical. I liked how their own game bombed. hehe... I thought it was pretty tongue-in-cheek of them as a comment on some of the games industry as a whole as well, how too many people try to rake in some fast cash on quick cash-in games, and don't take the time to really work on them and make them right. :)

@Highlar:
My problem, personally, with X-Play is twofold:
1) The content, or lackthereof. There are way too many unfunny skits, the musical episode, etc. and too little actual game info.
2) It's Xtreme! It just seems like it's pandering the the Mountain Dew, 14 year-old, boobs are awesome and farts are funny crowd. Not that I don't like boobs. But, for me, I expect more intelligent discussion, insight, and news than X-Play provides.
Although the new(ish) anime-style intro is kind of cool.

I really don't see what people's problems with X-Play are. If you don't like it, don't watch it. *shrugs* I find it to be really the ONLY TV show that I can watch that is really even remotely about gaming now (AOTS isn't about gaming anymore so much as it is about other things), so yes, I watch X-Play. I've seen Adam not just on X-Play but also his appearances on AOTS, and some other places, and he doesn't seem to be like a bad guy to me. He seems to like and enjoy games and gaming, and to me, that makes him one of the good ones in my book. Morgan I've never been completely sure of, though, as far as "gaming knowledge and passion" goes. But Adam I enjoy watching when it comes to GAMES and GAMING. They have knowledge, and they share it. And when it comes to teh gaming industry, we don't get that on TV really anywhere else. At least not in my area of Maryland on cable. Also, I like the new format. I've always wanted to see a show that covered MORE of the industry. The only problem I have with the format now: its way too short. They try to cram as many segments as they can into a half hour, which really doesn't work. It should be expanded to at least an hour long show, so that they can really SHOW some things, and get more reviews in. As it is, with the half hour format and competing with the other sections of the show, we are lucky to get 1-2 reviews a show, and that's about it now. Open it up to a 1 hour show, Adam and Morgan, and I think you'd have more of a hit.

I don't watch a lot of X-Play because it's pretty terrible. But I did catch the episode with Jeff Gerstmann. They were bashing Fox News for sensationalized broadcast and then they come around with a topic of "Japan short on innovation". Way to go. Singling out an entire country when developers in very country dish out rehash after rehash.
I'm glad Jeff Gerstmann was above this and brought something logical to the table.

Was G4 ever ZDNetTV? I think G4 was G4 and TechTV was ZDTV, which eventually after becoming TechTV was sold to G4 and became G4TechTV, before being consumed entirely.
I understand your position, though I don't think I had been watching it all that long. The first episode of Gamespot TV I saw was the preview of Dead or Alive 2 Hardcore for the PS2, and it didn't feel like too long before the gears were already turning for Extended Play.
I'd have to be pretty fucking bored to watch it nowadays. I'm not sure how much that has to do with the new format and how much it has to do with not really getting much from it anymore, though.

However, fast forward to January 14th(?) when they adopted the new format. I swear I saw about 3 episodes before I'd seen a single review. It's "cool" to bash X-Play because it's fucking awful.
The jokes aren't funny. The "facts" are untrue (according to X-Play,no Ghostbusters games are coming out,and no lightgun is available for next gen systems other than Wii). The reviews are excuses to try to unfunnily MST3K the games. Morgan Webb's voice makes my ears bleed,and Sessler's attitude makes me want to punch him in the mouth. They're the two smarmiest people ever to live. Sessler doesn't understand the difference between Miss and Ms.
Even though I did think of other things to say,I'll still point out Webb has an adam's apple. Also,she wants all women in the gaming media to be treated as equals to the men,yet uses her body to become popular,with swimsuit pictures and such.

Even I had to stop watching X-Play after it got past a certain degree of pandering and vapid. They were good for a while - a long while even.
Maybe I'll have to record some and check them out soon. The recent ep with Gerstmann sounded almost like a Fox interview with their stragegy of taking an assertion, making it an assumption, then basing everything around it BEFORE discussing. I have to give Jeff credit for that - I hadn't watched him before, but he didn't fall for it that time and argued that games in general are getting derivative, not just those from Japan. The hosts seemed to think that because of Portal, Bioshock, and CoD4(?) that all Western games were cutting-edge innovative now and everyone else is slipping... lol
