Sega Dreamcast - NIB!
Posted by Kotaku US Edition at 11:00 AM on March 2, 2008
Wow. You certainly don't run across these every day. Goodwill Industries is auctioning off a NIB Sega Dreamcast. The system comes with the system CDs and an extra controller. No games are included but those aren't too tough to find - even Amazon has a wide variety from third-parties.
My Dreamcast is still running beautifully and Soul Calibur still looks great on it so I can attest to the longevity of the system. I am curious however to know the story behind how this wound up at Goodwill in the first place. I hope that some college student doesn't go home at Spring Break to find that his collection of vintage gaming systems has been cleared out to make room for Christmas decorations by Mom.

I think the real question on everyone's mind is: will the Dreamcast make more money than the sealed copy of Chrono Trigger that went on ebay for over $1,000?

I loved my Dreamcast. I rented it at Hollywood Video with Sonic Adventure before it was released over the summer and instantly ordered an import DC from NCSX.com It was awesome.
I used to play New Japan Pro Wrestling all the time...Blue Stinger pretty much sucked! Reminds me of the dreamcast.net forums I used to visit all the time.

Any Dreamcast made before the final burst of production is technically worth considerably more than most old consoles when you factor in its unique "features". No cart game or subsequent disc based system is in any way as eternal as a working, pre-final revision DC.
NES, SNES, Genesis... Classics, all of them. But unless you have a childhood collection, buying yourself a retro console doesn't inherently mean much as you are reliant on locating and acquiring carts that still work in order to play your desired games. But say you find yourself with a Pre-Final Revision DreamCast? You can burn any game ever made for it onto a regular CD-R, officially released or not. Oh,and if you find yourself thinking DC games aren't retro enough for you, you can burn every Genesis game ever made onto a single CD-R as well. No modchips, no boot discs... Pure, unadulterated freedom.
Eventually all cart based games will break down, all discs will lose their data layer, and the legal means for enjoying these titles will have been lost to time. But... As long as a single Pre-FR DC survives, there will always be a system capable of effortlessly self sustaining those classics, and a system like that is worth a lot more than anyone on EBay is paying for it.
If you think the DC is seen as it is just because of its ridiculously high quality catalog, think again. The DC is a GOD among consoles because any retard with the system and a controller can immediately play any retro game they can remember. Heck, having memory problems? Make one up and play it homebrew. The DC is unholy, and that is why it gives me a chubby.
I could needlessly go into more detail and exaggerated description, but unfortunately I'll be too busy playing ANY GAME I WANT.
Shh, it's thinking.

@Brian Crecente: I think what JC is getting at is that the console is neither that old, nor that rare (even as NIB). Great console but it's not as mind blowing a find as the other posts in the past.
Not to be rude, but I was a bit underwhelmed myself. I've got a sealed 32X and sealed Mega CD2 that I picked up for $20 from Goodwill not long ago, but I wouldn't rate that newsworthy either.
If anything though, I'm just amazed Goodwill has got into internet auctions.

@QC8472: Do you still play PS2 games? Gamecube? Xbox? The Dreamcast was part of the same generation as all of those consoles. It came out before the PS2 and its early games look just as good (if not, better) than most later PS2 Titles.
The graphics aren't an issue at all, the games look fine by today's standards and they're still just as fun.
And yes, most models of the DC will run pirated games off of regular CD-Rs.

Let's begin:'Dreamcast >>> PS2. If SEGA had done this and that, it would be so and so. SEGA titles where the critically acclaimed titles of the industry. Pushing boundaries and whatnot. And so on.
Fact of the matter is, I am currently playing my Half Life DC copy and have almost finished the game. But that's just me. The fact that this console still runs well, although it has a life death relationship with me, makes my investment, a month before SEGA lowered their price, so much worth it.

This is cool because I assume the money will go to Goodwill, otherwise I would never waste my time. I still have my Dreamcast from 9/9/99 (best launch date ever) and it plays cd-rs.. uhh, I mean legal games just fine. Although the last game I did play on it years ago was a leaked copy of Half-Life 1 that was complete as far as I could tell and had all the right textures and sounds and played fine. I believe the story goes it was canceled because it was finished as the DC ship was going down; probably why we saw the game move to the PS2 instead. Heh I just checked and that exact cd-r is sitting peacefully in my unplayed but still working Dreamcast.

@Masterpain22:
Bleemcast for MGS emulated audio very poorly to a point that I just tossed the disc. Tekken 3 was good, though the inclusion of the arcade version with the PS2 T5 rendered it useless.
SC aside, the other good fighters saw decent releases elsewhere later. Though nothing can replace Shenmue 1, and it sadly doesn't boot on my system.

@jrghoull: it had many very good fighters that you couldn't find anywhere else, like SoulCalibur, MvC2, SF3, among others. So for fighter fans the system was great, and there were also other genres of games besides sports.
Also, for people who tried the bleemcast! with MGS1 you could play the game with way smoother graphics, which makes it a nice way to revisit the game before MGS4 comes out.

I might have to start hitting up eBay (ugh) soon. Not sure where to start though... I feel like there was a Langrisser title for the DC, but I'm not sure. If it is, would anyone recommend it?

When I remember how truely awesome Sega used to be and how they are now, I shed a tear. That whole Fable 2 XBLA integration? That was done ages ago with the VMU. Powerstone anyone? We were even able to make our own VMU community games. We had a web browser, and I played Quake III with a mouse and keyboard, as well as The Typing of the Dead.
I still think Chu Chu Rocket on XBLA would be boss! Or Hydro Thunder, Ready to Rumble (which EA is copying now), Cannon Spike, Re-Volt (A XBL test game) or a jillion other pick up and play games that were full of awesome that the Dreamcast had.

Man I loved my DC (but the d-pad was awful). The introduction of the analog triggers was a great move.
One of the best aspects of the DC was the ability to go online to any site and directly download save files into the VMUs/mem cards. I remember importing Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 because I badly wanted to play it...but then found out that to unlock all the characters you had to take the VMU to the arcades. But, lots of sites had save files with all characters unlocked. It was awesome...I don't know why you can't do the same with the Wii (I know you can download save files to SD cards and then transfer it to the Wii, but it's not the same thing).

is there any reasons still, in 2008, to get the dreamcast?
Are the games that good? are the graphics still acceptable? (let's be honest, most N64 games are not fun anymore because they are hard to look at; same goes for ps1)
Because... under 100 for a brand new sealed system... max 30$ for a controller + memory.. and I think the system even accepts burned DVDs (or is it CDs). It would be a good deal, if it really is as good as everyone says.

Not only did I get all I was supposed to get in the box, I got some random cables, a memory card reader for a pc and xbox controller. They admitted they weren't sure what to give me so they just gave me the lot. :)

I just wanted to add that I electrocuted myself while fixing my Dreamcast FAR too many times... Totally worth it though!

Reliable?
There was quite a common problem where they'd keep restarting themselves, you had to bend the pins on the mainboard to connect to the power supply better to fix it...

I got mine when the system price dropped to $50, I went straight to BestBuy to get it and from there to EBgames for a copy of MvC2. I had a great weekend.
I still have it connected to the tv in my living room, that's how good and reliable the system is.

That's like saying Mountain Dew ripped off V8-Splash.

i never had a dreamcast, but after seeing the image of its controller, i realize that microsoft's original xbox controllers completely ripped this off

@Dopeski: If it works that's an alright deal. I paid 50 for mine about 4 years ago. Came with a racing wheel 2 controllers 2 vibration backs 3 vmu's and a few games.

MvC I have trouble running it. It takes FOREVER to get that thing to start, but once it does it's cool.

Funny, I was about to buy a used Dreamcast just yesterday. I wasn't sure if 40 dollars was a good deal though. :-(

Looks like he took it out of the box for the auction.
You can get these for $30 regularly on ebay.

My launch Dreamcast broke, so I ran to a used-games store in town and bought two used ones to replace it. One for my younger siblings and another for me. Now that I think about it I might need to get a couple more just to be safe. If there is one console I want to keep forever the Dreamcast is it.
