Dark Sector Multiplayer Gimped On PS3
Posted by Mike Fahey at 3:20 AM on March 4, 2008
D3 Publisher has dropped details on the two multiplayer modes included in Dark Sector, revealing a slight gimping of the game on the PlayStation 3 versus the 360. While the Xbox 360 supports Quick, Custom, and Ranked matches, the PS3 will only allow you to search or create games. Boo! As for the game modes themselves, in the Infection game mode, one player takes the role of super-human main character Hayden while up to nine others play members of the Lasrian military, trying to take him down. When one of the troopers takes Hayden down the match ends, with the killer stepping into his super-powered shoes the next round. The second mode, Epidemic, features two teams each with their own Hayden, with rounds ending when a Hayden is brought down. Interesting choice, taking two game modes traditionally tacked on to multiplayer shooters and making them the focus. Hit the jump for more details.
Dark Sector - Multiplayer FeaturesGame Types - Dark Sector's multiplayer is broken up into two distinct game types: Infection and Epidemic.
Infection - The Infection game type is a match between Hayden and the Lasrian military. One player assumes the role of Hayden while all others (up to nine) assume the roles of Lasrian Troopers. Hayden is considered the infected target, and it is up to the Troopers to bring him down. Once Hayden is brought down ("finished"), the Trooper responsible becomes infected and a new round begins. A match will run until either time expires, or a set number of points are reached. The ultimate goal of an Infection match is to have the most number of points when the match is over. Points are granted to Troopers by either stunning Hayden, finishing Hayden, or assisting in bring Hayden down and points are awarded to Hayden by killing Troopers (Troopers can lose points by committing suicide).
As a Trooper, the player will be armed with either an assault rifle or a shotgun, have a couple grenades, and one proximity mine. Troopers can only attack Hayden, and so they can either work together (communicating via a shared chat channel) or go solo. In order to bring Hayden down, they must inflict a set amount damage which will stun him, and then, while he is stunned, perform a "finisher." The Trooper that performs the "finisher" becomes infected and plays as Hayden in the next round.
As Hayden, the player has no allies, but is armed with a Tekna 9mm, the Glaive, all three Evolutionary Powers, and any weapons dropped by the Troopers or lying around the various maps. Hayden also has access to the elements fire, ice, and electricity (depending on the level) to use against the attacking Troopers.
Epidemic - The Epidemic game type is a team based match between the Lasrian military, and the Agency. Players are divided into two teams where (on each team) one player assumes the role of Hayden, and all others assume the roles of Troopers. Matches end based on a time limit, or point total, and rounds end whenever a Hayden is brought down. Team points are awarded whenever an opposing team brings down the other team's Hayden, and individual points are awarded to players based on kills and assists (players can also lose points by committing suicide). Players can only communicate with other players in the same team, and can only attack players on the opposing team. Both the Troopers and the Haydens retain the same functionality they have in the Infection game type.
In both game types, players will respawn at designated spawn points when they are killed.
Multiplayer Customization
On the X360, MP games can either be played using Xbox Live, or System Link. On the PS3, MP games can either be played on the Playstation Network, or LAN.
Each multiplayer game type supports up to ten players and has access to five different maps. The maps are unique in size, detail (such as weather effects), and layout. For example, the map called the Deck promotes a more close combat oriented play style, whereas the Court promotes a more team-based play style with its symmetrical layout and numerous opportunities to surround opposition. Multiplayer games can also be customized in terms of time limit, number of players, score limit, and the existence of bots.
Leaderboard
A Leaderboard is available for both the PS3 and the X360, however the X360 board uses TrueSkillâ„¢ rank and the PS3 uses a traditional scoring system. A player's score on the board (either PS3 or X360) is based on the multiplayer game performance game performance.
PS3 vs. X360
Both systems will allow players to create, join, and search for multiplayer games. However, only the X360 gives players a Quick game option, a Custom game option, and a Ranked game option. The Quick game option will pick a game for the player based on their preference of Infection or Epidemic. The Custom game option allows players to set up their own games with the customizable settings of time limit, score limit, number of players, and the availability of bots. Ranked games are directly linked to the X360 Leaderboard. A player's performance in a Ranked game will determine their position on the X360 Leaderboard. The PS3 allows players to search for or create multiplayer games.

Simple, 360's the lead SKU till PS3 (if ever) catches up. Till then, most AAA games will be 360, Nuff Said.

As the adage goes....you get what you pay for.
PS3 Online gaming is only slightly improved over PS2 Online Gaming (which wasn't amazing...save for SOCOM....let's be honest). Given that they have had many years since the release of the 1st PS2 Network Adapter.....you have to wonder what Sony's Engineers have been doing all this time.
As long as this is the case.......when it comes to multi-platform multiplayer games.....the 360 version will come out on top.

Man Im really tired of this shit about hating on the PS3 owners. This game is gonna suck already, all they did was stick Dark Sector over Gears of War title, and why make a bad game worse by making it crappy mp on one console. I mean could they not spend freaking 1 more month of the 4 years they've been working on this to fix it? Fuck DE they can suck a cock.

I own both systems and I doubt I'll get this for either. Just doesn't appeal to me.
On the conversation of PSN vs. XBL...well there is no conversation. Warhawk is the best online game for the PS3. If all the games for PSN worked like Warhawk and had some of the functionality of Warhawk PSN might stand a chance.
I'll happily pay my 50 bucks a year for XBL. My 360 is currently RROD (on my 4th system). Been logging quite a few hours on Warhawk in its absence. The only other game I own for the PS3 is UT3 and while fun online, the lack of voice makes it extremely boring. Can't wait for some GTA, Socom, RFOM2, and GT Prologue for the PS3.
As far as my Wii goes...haven't even turned the damn thing on in about a month. It gets used when the niece and nephew come to visit. It's about to get put on ebay. It was a fun system for a couple weeks but the amount of shit games out for it are boring and useless. Long live the DS though!!
Wow....end of rant. Everyone get WASTED!!!

@crusadernm: One thing I am always wondering is how commenters here on Kotaku know so much about the PS3 development and how "the PS3 is just a terrible system to develop for."
Saying "DEVELOPERS THINK that the PS3 is just a terrible system to develop for" and saying "the PS3 is just a terrible system to develop for" are two completely different things.
So do you have any experience or is this just speculation?

@crusadernm:
I thought about it.
If all developers thought with that logic, the Odyssey would still be selling games.
Progress requires a change in thinking. We already know most of the video game industry is stagnant - just look at the new gameplay elements that seem so obvious, yet have taken decades to evolve (destructible environments, for example) - but when a technology is scary, but can give you major benefits and performance increases when you get a handle on it, wouldn't you want to try?
If you don't, we not only get "So-and-so game 63: Return of the Sameness", we get ALL games playing and performing the same way.
And they want $60 a pop for that? Hah!

@crusadernm: Please stop trolling on here and spouting off nonsense that people who actually do this for a living have disputed with great evidence and candor.
The PS3 is not "difficult" to develop for it is just different from the Xbox 360 architecture. The PS3 uses PBP (Parallel Board Programming) while the 360 uses a more PC familiar design. The PS3's functionality is not "new" or "complex" it is just that the two styles are so different and clash that you just cant run something on the 360 and expect it to act the same way on the PS3. It takes time to get things just right and while optimization is a must it isn't "too hard" its just tedious.
And if a developer was going to complain about having to optimize a product or perform some tedious task then I do not feel sorry for them and they are the epitome of "LAZY".
As for the PS3 being a "terrible system to develop for" I believe that Criterion, Infinity Ward, Insomniac, Incognito, Capcom (DMC4 team), Codemasters, and NIS would like to have a word with you.
For that matter....Jonathan Mak would also like to point out he made a game for the PSN ALL BY HIMSELF! ZOMG!
Anyways, seriously, stop talking and go away. Find some nice heavy traffic to go play in or something just stop filling up my chat screen.

For the one trillionth time, the PS3 is too hard to develop for. The developers didn't suddenly say, "hey let's screw the PS3 fans by not including a full online feature set." They tried the best they can. Stop cussing them out. The PS3 is just a terrible system to develop for. No matter how hard I try I won't be able to long jump 30 feet. Think about what I said for a second.

Fair enough, and here is the point I am trying to get across:
If I have to jump through hoops to get something that used to work fine (for years) to work again, when nothing on my end changed and it's required to play games I paid money for, it is not worth it. I have enough other things to keep me occupied. The 360 isn't a goldmine of exclusive content, so at this point, it's a paperweight for me.
I chose to speak with my wallet once before when I bought the 360 because it was, and is, a great games system. I'm speaking with my wallet once more, by refusing to support a console who's backing company could car less about issues that are obviously on their end.
It took a lot for me to trust MS as a game company. I did it, and now I end up with nothing because of it. I got some good times in while it lasted, and now my PS3 gets the benefit of my entertainment dollar, "gimped" games or not.

I imagine this is just because the 360 handles alot of these things by itself and the PS3 doesn't. Therefore D3 aren't gonna be arsed to do it themselves. Let's fact it: the only good game D3 have ever/will ever be involved with is Puzzle Quest. And Puzzle Quest is by all accounts a horrible game that just happens to be ridiculously addictive...almost by accident.

Lol People bitching about the dev not putting the same amount of effort into the p3 version vs the 360. Guess what they put in the same amount of effort, but the same amount of effort goes a longer ways in the 360. All the matchmaking and net infrastructure is already there in the 360 API.

Groodle I have been having a similar problem since November. My 360 keeps cutting offline. The router light goes off or is off when I boot up my 360 and I can't get online. I've had 0 problems with other devices connected to the router. It requires me to unplug & replug in the router end of the 360 ethernet cord a # of times until it finally starts working, lights up. I've tried different cables, I've tried the 360 end of the ethernet cord, I've tried contacting MS, nothing/noone has solved the problem. The good thing is that I can usually game a little bit online, but it requires about 10 minutes of replugging the cord for every hour of play. I'm going to switch to PS3 soon, what else can I do, buy another crap60?

@HurricaneDave: Let me rephrase.
MS provides servers and development tools for stat tracking and matchmaking to the developer to use so the developer takes advantage of them and incurs minimal cost in doing so.
If Sony provides not such tools to the developer, there is no incentive for them to make more of an investment into the platform that will most likely see a smaller return.
Please explain where I am going wrong if you disagree because I can not find a flaw in my logic.

As a PS3 owner I don't care if the content in other versions is similar, the fact that made me remove this game from my shopping list is that we don't get respect by getting an inferior version. I will definitively not support games that make an incomplete version or with less features e.g. Virtua Fighter 5, the PS3 version does not feature online and the 360 does, and eventhough I could buy it now for lees than 40 bucks I don't care, screw them. The game (Dark S.) is not going to be cheaper or does it?

I don't see why many PS3 owners are taking offense to this, it isn't THAT bad.
You don't have a Quick Match option? Who uses that anyway, it just throws you into a match with the last know settings.
You don't have a Custom Match? Isn't that the same damn thing as creating a match?!
There is no Ranked?! You still have Leaderboards which is what Ranked is all about, the PS3 just doesn't use something like Truskill (which I believe doesn't work to begin with).
Seems pretty dumb to read comments on this about people throwing away interest in the game. But, whatever, I haven't played the game yet and I hope it turns out to be fun. Lots of games to play before GTA! (Frontlines, Condemned 2, Rainbow Six Vegas 2)

The fact that D3 Publisher would title a section of their press release as "PS3 vs. X360" kills all respect I had for the company. Obviously they're either incredibly biased as a publisher, or they're getting some payoff from Microsoft. Why else would a company want to further proliferate this idea of a "console war" by choosing sides, let alone dedicate a section of their press release to say just how much they favor the X360 over the PS3?

"Sorry guys, I think this is one of those times where people have different definitions of "dedicated" and "peer to peer".
We do not have dedicated, hosted, no-client servers on PS3 or 360. The PC game comes with a dedicated server executable for people to run if they want to set up a dedicated server, but the console game does not.

The ps3 doesn't have dedicated servers for every game that has multiplayer options.

Hm. The subject to this article is pretty misleading. I would look at 'gimped' and think the gameplay, graphics, framerate or general quality was sub-par on one version. However, it looks to be a "quick-match" option in the game.
Perhaps it was created to enhance the fanboy wars.
No, it was definitely created to enhance the fanboy wars.

@JackTretton: I'm not raving about XBL, but it does work and it works fine for me and my friends.
Are you telling me to go try COD4 on a PC or PS3? I really don't feel like forking over more $ just to see how other devices play this game. If it works just fine now, why change? Not to mention if I went to the PC/PS3 i'd be abandoning my friends.
I'm sure for the people who love PC gaming will enjoy everything but XBL, but as for me and the countless others who grew up gaming on only a console, XBL is damn near perfect.

I'm sorry, you must be joking.
I have been unable to play any 360 game that requires Live for more than 10 minutes at a time since about last Thanksgiving. I have reported this to MS, with no resolution, 3 times.
So, what am I paying for again? Oh, right. My 360 to gather dust while I enjoy my time on the PS3 much more.

This is where Microsoft's experience in server and networking technology is helping them out. Providing networking assets to 360 developers is paying off. Wasn't it the guy at Epic who said he loved "not having to think about networking" when working on 360?
Also, this game looks beautiful. I'll have to check it out

looks like the developer gimped the actual game let alone the MP. Though I wasn't even aware that this type of game necessatated a multiplayer mode.
I'll be surprised if it turns out to be enjoyable. Though I'll wait for bargain bin. Smash is the only game I can afford this month. I miss being a kid. :(

@-EDGE-: Why I love the PC version of COD4, good ole server lists. I get to browse games, see what maps are being played, how many players, whose playing, and best of all, how good the connection is. Nothing I hate more than console gaming is the stupid random connecting of online games.

I like matchmaking because it will put other gamers into the room to verse my friends and I instead of trying to convince people to stay or switch teams.
I fully support matchmaking, but every game should have every option tho.

You know it's funny you should mention this. Just last night as a few friends and I were playing CoD4 we all agreed that we missed the old days of "finding" a server and putting it in favorites. This was just a great way of playing with, and in places where you found gamers of your "tastes" so to speak. I think the quick match is cool, but I miss picking out and tagging my favorites.

I'm sure people who can't network properly have problems with gaming tho, that's their problem, not XBL.

PSN doesn't supply the computers used for multiplayer matchmaking. So developers and publishers have to pay for this and determine if it is worth their while.
XBox Live does provide the computers and the infrastructure for multiplayer matchmaking, as well as a framework for developing the matchmaking code.

I'm not sure I understand the difference. Is the only difference that you cannot just have the game randomly pick a match for you on the PS3, you have to have it search and then you select from a list? If so, then I don't mind. That's always how I do things, because I like to be able to play the map I want. If it's also that there's no such thing as leaderboards on the PS3 version, then that sucks. And why the fuck wouldn't they include it? Pure bullshit. Every other online game I have for PS3 has leaderboards, so why couldn't this one have it? I'm not even sure I understand it properly, so I don't know: does the PS3 version have leaderboards or not?

Perhaps the lack of a ranking system?
