Infogrames Want To Buy What's Left Of Atari
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 3:40 PM on March 7, 2008
French company Infogrames are Atari's majority shareholder. Looks like they're soon to be their only shareholder. A letter has arrived at Atari HQ from Infogrames, no doubt signed in a beautiful, flowing script by the company's new Directeur Général Délégué, indicating their desire to buy any and all remaining Atari stocks for $US 1.68 per share. Atari don't have to accept, but then again, they don't exactly have the strongest of bargaining positions at the moment.

I hate that name "infogrames". Is it pronounced like "games" with an R in it?

@SnakeCL: Haha! That would indeed be harsh. While it wasn't nearly as bad, something similar did happen to me:
My parents had left me at my friend's house for a week. One day we were playing Contra on Nes and her mom was insisting that we would not only go outside, but help shovel some gravel that was in the driveway to bring it in the backyard. Then, by accident, I got hit really hard on the nose by a heavy metal shovel and got 3 stitches. I shit you not, I remember my friend's mom feeling so sorry and saying she should never have asked us to go work outside. Then she let us play Nes in the basement for the rest of the week and kept bringing us ice cream.
That was so worth it!

I really hate people who make fun of failing corporations like Atari, THQ, Midway. (Yes, Im looking at some commenters at this thread). Fair enough, they release bad games more than everyone else, but they are the ones that produce some of the most original content, unlike "successful" corporations who rely on formulaic games.
Lest we forget, Rockstar (an unknown publisher then) self-released GTAIII and was supposed to publish Halo (til Bungie moved to MS); Midway published Burnout (when nobody thought arcade racers would be profitable); THQ published Company of Heroes (one of the best strategy games of the recent years) because no one else wanted to; Atari Neverwinter Nights (when Bioware was still seen as a non-mainstream developer); and many more equally deserving.
My point is that these publishers deserve not our ridicule. They might be guilty of releasing bad games (like ALL publishers!), but at least they are the ones ready to publish new and original IPs "successful" publishers ignore.

You know, Atari/Infogrames have released some good titles in the past. I mean, they did take a chance on Ikaruga which deserves some props.
Maybe if they did that and licensed a bunch of solid titles instead of making crappy Godzilla games* they might not be so bad off.
* FWIW Destroy All Monsters Melee was quite fun as a multiplayer game but the new one on the Wii looks pretty blah.

@Kaneda:
I wonder if there's ever been a case where a kid's been playing videogames all day, and mom forces him to go outside... where he is abruptly run over and killed by a drunk driver.
Morbid, yes, but I would bet that parent didn't feel so virtuous afterwards.

Wow that Infogrames logo takes me way back. It reminds me the days when I was playing the first Alone in the Dark in 1992. The generation of that logo (with color!) on my tiny computer screen meant hours of fun were coming. I loved to play this game and really enjoyed rotating and examining the items found in 3D. Then my mom would decide it was time for me to go play outside... That was rough.

Infogrames kinda need to stop being punks and make a sequel to
Starshot: Space Circus Fever. I'm pretty sure that would be quite awesome.

Will they pass the torch (dbz license) to infogrames you think? And what will that mean for Burst Limit?

Well, if game journalists sound psyched about Alone in the Dark when they write up their previews, lets buy some Infogrames stock shall we?

If I buy one share they'll never have ALL of it, hahaha! Take that Infogrames, you and your annoying name! But why would I want to own any of Atari?

@armchairnixon: wishes he had Xbox Live...: Infrogrames wanting to buy back Atari is like a tail breaking off of a lizard (that's being chased by a predator) because it doesn't want to be eaten with the lizard but then after the lizard escapes from danger, the tail wants to be reunited. Clearly a tail doesn't have the mind to make keen survival decisions but then again, neither does Infogrames O_o

Infogrames was once an independent company and they were bought out by Atari. Inforgrames, now a division of Atari, want to buy out their parent company and become Infogrames again.
What a strange, strange world we live in...

Aw I was considering buying some Atari stock when it was $0.26, but I didn't. If I had wouldn't that mean Infogramse would of had to negotiate with me?
