Wii Won't Excommunicate You from Nintendo World
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 6:00 PM on March 7, 2008
A lot of people write off the Wii. Not SEGA boss Simon Jeffery. He is all about the Wii. No wonder, Sonic & Mario at the Olympic Games has done big business! Says Jeffery:
I do think going forward there is very much a place for the hardcore gamers on the Wii and there's a big opportunity for publishers to take advantage of that because we've seen the success of Resident Evil on Nintendo platforms... But I do also believe that a lot of Western publishers are only looking at the Wii for casual and family gaming, and I think that's a mistake — I think there's a lot more opportunity there on the Wii. The Wii isn't just about Wii Tennis and Mario & Sonic; it's about so much more. The Wii as a platform has way much more to offer than [Wii Tennis and Mario & Sonic], and hardcore gamers traditionally love Nintendo as well. There's no reason why they should be excluded or excommunicated from the Nintendo world.Bwah? Nintendo world?! Excommunicated?! Wow, talk about being a Wii convert. This guy's fanatical.

@ajay42: Ok I may have unfairly bashed Zak and wikipedia. My point is still valid though, what devs besides capcom have even put any effort into devolping for the wii? I guess winning eleven play maker is an interseting take on futbol, it's not really a system seller though.

@Striderhayasa - Phillyyakk on PSN and Live.: Having played both games, I can truthfully say that saying Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden are clones is like saying every single FPS is exactly the same. They're significantly different in many ways from the gameplay to the world styling.

@guy_jin: uh...what the hell are you talking about? First of all, shinobi predates Ninja Gaiden, Ninja Gaiden Black and Ninja Gaiden Sigma. Besides, the current NGs are all Devil May Cry rip offs. Just like any game that Team Ninja does...its always a rip off of some other popular game. So don't give me that nonsense of Shinobi being "me too". Last I checked Gaires is a Sega game. If it's not then tell me who made it.
Last, old series are being reintroduced all the time. A lot of gamers today have no first hand knowledge of bionic commando and I'd bet money that many others don't realize that Strider debuted on NES years before the 8Meg Genesis version ever saw the light of day. that didn't stop Capcom from remaking and updating BC and Strider.
Try again dude, I put your comments in the "irrelevant" column.

Another statement of "the Wii can do hardcore games, just look at Resident Evil!" I wonder if they're going to say that 5 years from now...
I know there are more, but that seems to be the only one that was noticed.
Personally, I can't explain it well, I have about 8 good Wii games, but it's a party system. It gets played when I pack it up and haul it to a friend's place, but otherwise it just sits there. The games are good, but I'm just more inclined to play the ones on all of my other systems first. :/

dude it's just the cool thing to do on the internet. I own over 10 games for my wii and enjoy and play them all. I also own a 360 with about 6-7 games, and split time equally between the 2. Some days 360 gets more love, sometimes Wii gets more love.
But all this "my Wii is collecting dust, Wii only has teh cazual gamez!!!" B.S. is nonsense. I keep encouraging people to get down to their stores and actually look around. But you know people would rather bitch on the internet or listen to a gazillion blogger reveiwers and base their opinions on that.

"Zak and Wiki doesn't count, I've played 5000 3d-platformers on the ps2."
Yeah, see? This is standard practice around here. Most of the people dissing this game (and Wii games in general) obviously have not played them or even READ about them! Zak and Wiki is not a 3d platformer in the slightest.
There are advantages and disadvantages to the Wii just like any other system. I just happen to have played Metroid Prime 3 and Mass Effect back to back and I wish I could have welded the control system, art design and polish from MP3 onto the epic scale, story and (when they worked) graphics of ME. But alas! I cannot... In any case, both were excellent games on their own. I think its criminal that MP3 has been as overlooked as it has.

[kotaku.com]
Here we are almost a year later and does Ubisoft have anything coming for the Wii gamers give a rat's ass about? Not that I can think of off the top of my head.
Hell, Nintendo doesn't even have anything coming out that I am seriously interested in. The nth iterations of Mario Kart and Smash Bros. do not excite me.
Nintendo needs to put their money where their mouth is and INNOVATE. It's messed up that there are more WiiWare games I'm interested in than full Wii games.

@Xiedo: Comparing Red Steel to Metroid Prime 3 is like comparing Quest 64 to Final Fantasy 7. Both in the same category..but the former games fail immensely, while the latter succeeds at epic proportions. So yes..Red Steel was a disappointment, Metroid Prime 3 rocks.

I tend to disagree with him. I don't think its a lack of games that keep some 'hardcore' gamers from getting a Wii, its the controller. I know among my gamer friends there is a pretty strong dislike for the wiimote/nunchuk control scheme. I know you can use other controllers if you like but at that point you might as well just play your Gamecube.

@Xiedo: Red Steel was horrible.
Metroid 3 (on "advanced/expert" setting) is very good ("easy" setting on the controls is actually quite awful - kinda like Red Steel).
However, Medal Of Honor: Heroes 2, with the neutral box at minimum and the sensitivity at about 2/3, trumps them all.

I don't think people who value 'hardcore' games more than 'good' games are going to ever be pleased with the Wii...and why should we care?
I mean, for god's sake, even solid/good adventure games like Zack and Wiki aren't 'hardcore' enough? Let the people who want this stuff stick to 360s...Wii already has enough casual shovelware, we don't need to add the hardcore shovelware that these people like. :)

@SnakeCL: I'm willing to bet you're wrong.
I played RE4 on the Gamecube, beat it and loved it. Would I buy the same exact game again just because it was prettier? Absolutely not, and I bet many people would feel the same way. Prettier graphics do not change the game.
However, I did buy it again on the Wii, because the controls did change the game. I even got all of the bottle caps on the Wii version because instead of the bottle cap mini game being a pain in the ass it was awesome. Handgun + IR pointer controls = me ripping off headshots with ease and not fumbling around with clumsy dual analog.

I think its actually somewhat interesting.
"We've seen the success of Resident Evil on Nintendo Platforms."
I'm willing to bet that an upgraded 360 port of RE4 would've sold better than the wii version. Or the upcoming RE0 port, would probably sell on any system at the moment. I mean, I realize that Capcom is in it for the moneyhats, but I think their main audience is still on the 360, PS3. I'd shamelessly buy up every half-ass GC port if it were on PS3. Since I could care less about a wii (already have a GC thank you) Capcom won't be seeing any of my money, and apparently I'm not the only one who feels this way.

Also, the first five minutes actually play like a more conventional FPS, but the rest is pure Metroid. Kinda hints at what could be...

Well it seems like whenever a "hardcore" 3rd party game is released, it does poorly for whatever reason. Wii has sold the most units worldwide this generation yet the only successful games seem to be 1st party and/or casual games. It would be interesting to see the Wii with a "Ninja Gaiden" port, but even if that were to happen, I think myself and a lot of other people would rather play it on the 360 or PS3. They've kind of dug themselves a hole (I blame the purple lunchbox for starting Nintendo's downfall... long live the SNES days).

Damn, I wish more developers thought that way. I'd like to see the Wii draw casual gamers into other games and have the whole industry grow rather than segregate. There is as much room in the market for casual and hard core games as there is for platformers and shooters. So we shouldn't be forced to choose one over the other (on any platform).

Zak and Wiki DOES count.
And since when has a Nintendo console needed good third party games to succeed? The Wii sure isn't suffering in sales because of a lack of them.
But I would like some more good non-Nintendo games to choose from. Remember, games take a year or two to develop, and most developers didn't think the Wii would succeed until it launched into orbit. You saw the industry in shock as they pumped out shovelware to try and cash in, now other companies have started to work on real games for it. There's PLENTY of hardcore games on the Wii, Kotaku trolls just don't acknowledge their existence so they have something to argue about. It doesn't help when you push the definition to make everything on the Wii (and pretty much all other games in the process) a 'casual game'.
