Valve Releases GDC Slides, Sheds Light On All Things Orange Box
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 11:10 AM on March 11, 2008
Didn't make it to this year's Game Developers Conference? If you were particularly excited about attending some of Valve's various sessions, you can virtually attend through the power of the PDF. The house of Half-Life, Portal and Counter-Strike has released the slides from its four GDC presentations which cover all aspects of The Orange Box. The presentations "Integrating Narrative and Design: A Portal Post-Mortem" and "Stylisation With a Purpose: The Illustrative World of Team Fortress 2" may be the most layman friendly, giving regular folk a look beyond The Orange Box's developer commentary. All four are worth a peek at the very least.

The enginer and pyro sketches really remind me of Mike Mignola's work.

TF2 is the one of the best multiplayer FPS's for sure. Its officially replaced CS:Source for me. Then again, I tend to drool over anything Valve breathes on.

Looks incredible. The opening is some of the same stuff they mentioned in the developer commentary but then they dive into those formulas and lambert and phong and stuff - whew!
The careful attention and talent they brought to this project really shows in the end result - still playing TF2 almost every night!

One of the last slides in the TF2 presentation mentions Meet the Scout.

Awesome awesome. I liked how their concepts. Who would have thought they'd use Miyazaki for some of their inspiration?
And was that a sneak peak at the new medigun for the medic on one of the slides? Nice.

TF2 is one of 4 online games Ive clocked more than 30 hours on. The other 3 are wow, Americas Army, and Wolfenstein enemy territory. I enjoy the orange box so much Its the best deal I ever got in gaming.

Did Roger the Homunculus have a baby with Johann Kraus, or is that an Apexplorer?

It's cool to see the developers release their presentations like this, for us lay people who are unable to attend these conferences. I highly suggest checking out Naughty Dog's corporate website for their slides on Uncharted.
