More Signs Point To Cryptic As Star Trek Online Developer
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 12:20 PM on March 15, 2008
One would think that Star Trek and massively multiplayer online gaming are the chocolate and peanut butter of a nerdy good time. Whatever the outcome, it seems like money in the bank, regardless of the dominance of World of Warcraft. Still, it's been a rough go, with Star Trek Online festering at Perpetual until that developer gave up the ghost.
While rumours abound that Cryptic Studios—now hard at work on Champions Online—were picking up the licence, various sites are pointing more fingers at the Bay Area dev, with TrekMovie.com calling it "confirmed." It sounds like it's pretty much a done deal. Now all we need is the official word.

LIES. ALL OF IT.
If they were making STO, they wouldn't have the resources to work on vampire hunting and tomb raiding MMO's! That would be intolerable.
Also, from the ChampO forums, regarding why they canned Marvel:
"Cryptic did have a fair amount of choice in the decision, and we decided that it was in our best interest to publish a title ourselves, using a setting and characters that we have control over."
I'm just saying.

Aren't Cryptic pretty busy trying to steal back the audience of their first creation with Champions Online?
They must have expanded if they're taking on a SECOND MMO.
That said, there is no way this game can live up to the expectations of... well... Star Trek. Seriously, how could they?

The scoop about Cryptic Studios licensing Star Trek Online is claimed by w00t Studios (*1), which is credited at Wikipedia (*2).
As noted by Voodoo Extreme 3D IGN (*3), a legal notice posted to the owner of Star Trek Gamers led to the discovery that Cryptic Studios had taken control of the troubled Star Trek Online MMO.
"The change of developer was rumoured for some time, but the digging of another user on the site revealed that Timothy Harris is representing Cryptic Studios' Champions Online, effectively confirming the rumour."

I can't say I'm super excited about STO but anything that Cryptic does is going to be worth a go. CoH just provided the genre with so many gold standards that I have the highest respect for tehm. I'd much rather support one of their products than yet another polished bundle of plagiarism from Blizzard.

Cryptic most definitely is the new developer for Star Trek Online.

I think "Enterprise" pretty much killed Star Trek, not the last movies helped.
After all Activision sued Paramount over the Star Trek license ...
Star Trek MMORPG is going to fall flat, I never see it going to work because when it comes to Star Trek they rather do "yet another Starship simulator" that do what the basis of the show was, the CREW of the ship.
