"Making StarCraft II Is Harder Than Totally New Title"

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 11:40 PM on March 18, 2008

Imagine the weight Blizzard must feel. Talk about pressure! Says lead producer Chris Sigaty: "The original StarCraft has such a huge fan base, and so, in some ways, I think, making StarCraft II is harder had we chosen a totally new title or even one of our others because there's such a hardcore fan base that has certain expectations. That's definitely the biggest challenge from my prospective. No kidding. Blizzard doesn't only to satisfy the expectations of its diehards fans, but those of the entire Korean nation. So, Blizzard, please do let South Korea down.

British Sales Charts

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 11:20 PM on March 18, 2008

After the excitement of last time around, a certain sense of normalcy returns to the British charts this week, as Mario & Sonic claw their way back to top spot on the individual all-formats chart. I say certain, though, because even taking that into account, things aren't as dire as usual. Soulstorm hangs on to be the only PC game I can ever remember sticking around longer than one week, Army of Two kept right on selling well and, perhaps most promising of all, there's only one Brain Training game in the top 10. Onwards and upwards, Britain!

These are the third series to be released by DC Direct, and while they won't be out until November, they figure March is early enough to begin whetting your appetite with pictures. Four figures will make up the series: a Blood Elf Paladin, a Draenei Mage, an Undead Rogue and a Human Priestess. Lookers, the lot of them.

PSP Skype Headset Coming In April

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 9:30 PM on March 18, 2008

As it stands, Skype on the PSP is useful, but problematic. Biggest problem being you need two separate accessories to run it: headphones and a mic. That'll be sorted next month when Sony release their official Skype headset, which while still lacking an official price is currently listed on Amazon for the all-too-affordable price of $US 20.

British Retailer Takes A Stab At Loads Of Release Dates

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 8:30 PM on March 18, 2008

It wasn't just Euro-specific Rock Band tracks being let loose on attendees of the Play.com show in London the other day. There were release dates as well. Loads of awfully precise-sounding release dates, for games that until now had none. Like Fable 2, which apparently has a British release date of May 30 (though this has been subsequently denied). And Ghostbusters, which was listed as appearing on September 26. Some of the other notable games listed were Prototype (June 27), The Bourne Conspiracy (June 27), Iron Man (May 30) and Lego Batman (September). All of which look possible. Not probable, just possible.

Blu-ray Rental Gets Serious In Japan

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 8:00 PM on March 18, 2008

Starting march 19th (tomorrow!), Japanese rental chain TSUTAYA will begin offering Blu-ray discs for rent at ten shops in big cities across Japan. The service will include rental at TSUTAYA bricks and mortal shops and at its online TSUTAYA DISCAS shop. The aim is to have Blu-ray available at every store nationwide by the summer. TSUTAYA's the biggest rental chain in Japan, so for Blu-ray, this is a pretty big deal. I'm curious: Is it possible to rent Blu-ray elsewhere, Japan or not?

Peter Moore Finally Gets His Blog On

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 6:30 PM on March 18, 2008

Sure, he announced it last month, but Peter Moore's only just gotten around to launching his blog for reals. Sadly, there's no candid tell-all on why sex scandals drove him out of Microsoft or why he's gotten a bitchin' Jungle Strike tattoo across his belly. What is there is less of the promised "inside look at EA Sports" and more a loose collection of on-message PR, which is a little disappointing, if not totally unexpected. Still. Plenty of time for the self-confessed "neophyte blogger" to learn the ropes and get to posting all the juicy rumours he hears about John Riccitiello's wife around the executive water cooler.

Proof Xbox LIVE Can Get You Pregnant

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 5:00 PM on March 18, 2008

Best to let Xbox LIVE player Stacy explain what the hell's going on:

I just thought you might be interested to know that Mike and I met playing Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Lockdown. Funny thing is, we hated each other at first, but somehow ended up falling in love. I was from Georgia and he was from the Bronx. On a leap of faith we met, and we have been together ever since. If it wasn't for Xbox LIVE, our paths would have never crossed. :) We had our daughter--who we thought to be the first Xbox LIVE baby--on September 24, 2007. Maybe she's the first Xbox 360 baby, at least... I AM SO THANKFUL FOR XBOX AND THE ONLINE COMMUNITY! If it wasn't for that, I wouldn't have the man of my dreams and a beautiful new baby!
Congrats! Now Stacy, get your kid off the Xbox 360. Those things get hot.

Sony To Make Aesthetic Changes To Home?

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 4:30 PM on March 18, 2008

Courtesy of a couple of readers, I just got done reading through the latest survey sent out to the beta testers putting Sony's Home project through its paces. Most of it is - as you' expect - a combination of the boring and pointless, though there is some interesting stuff regarding the game's central "plaza". Users were asked what, if they could pick, they'd like the game's all-important plaza/hub to look like, and were given ten styles to choose from, ranging from the ultra-minimalist to a cozy woodland getaway. Sadly, it seems my suggestion for using the bridge from Seaquest DSV has been completely ignored.

Does Mass Effect Even Need Multiplayer?

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 3:00 PM on March 18, 2008

Some games are great for multi-player. Take Halo or Call of Duty. Great multi-player experiences! But what about something like, say, Mass Effect? Is developer BioWare thinking about turning its single player RPG into a multiplayer online experience? Says BioWare's Matt Atwood:

If the team wanted to do it then I think they could do it well. But Mass Effect is an experience that is very personal, because you make very personal choices. You choose whether you're going to explore that romance or explore that planet; are you going to save someone's life or are you going to kill them? And these are all things that are really personal. So is it possible? Sure, I think the team's smart enough to do it. But I don't know if they're going to do it.
Just 'cause all the other kids are doing it, doesn't mean BioWare has to. No need to give into peer pressure!

While they won't settle the issue of whether the added waggle is a pro or a con, they at least settle something: unless you're cheating and playing it upscaled on a PS3, this will be better-looking than the PS2 version.

A Donkey Kong Jesus Fit For Christina Aguilera Spawn

The painting is apparently now hanging in Christina Aguilera's baby nursery. If that wasn't enough (it's not), Kotaku's Associate Editor Flynn De Marco has a Misha original tattooed on his bodice. You Want GTA IV Australia? That'll Be $120, Thanks

Australian Post Posted by Logan Booker at 1:30 PM on March 18, 2008

gta4_ps3box_small.jpgIt's not $99.95. It's not even $109.95. No, my friends, Grand Theft Auto IV will have a recommend retail price of $119.95 in Australia. Note that while the PS3 version of the game is shown here (which seems to be a publisher favourite for inflated prices) the Xbox 360 will also cop the $120 price tag.

This is for the standard game, not the Collector's Edition. It smarts even more when you consider it'll retail for $US 59.95 in the States. That's ~$65 Australian, which means we're basically paying double the price.

Blizzard Worldwide Invitational Tickets

Attention real Blizzard fans! If you're going to be in the city of Paris—or close enough to make the trip worthwhile—know that tickets for the event go on sale this Thursday, March 20. The event, which was held in Korea in 2007 and saw the formal announcement of StarCraft II is planned for Saturday, June 28 and Sunday, June 29. All the action happens at Porte de Versailles Exposition Centre. We would suggest buying early if you plan on going, as BlizzCon tickets sold out like lightning.

There's going to be competitive gaming, hands-on time with Wrath of the Lich King and StarCraft II, but we hope the real draw is the announcement of Diablo III or World of The Lost Vikings.

Inventively named the GameFly Trade-In Program, gamers can send in their used games—shipping cost footed by you—to get credit for their account.

Looks like the mail rental service is going after some of GameStop's business, hoping to pay bottom dollar for more of its library. I can't imagine there are too many publishers and developers who will be thrilled to learn of yet another game retailer who's tapping into the used market.

According to the job description, positions are for three months only, so if you're not already in Melbourne, it may be out of your reach. Unless you're related to Inspector Gadget, in which case you can probably just go-go-Gadget there and back.

Have I gone slightly mad? Maybe!

If you'd like to help the developer iron out the bugs in its latest titles, or even get taste of how games are made, be sure to check this opportunity out. Oh, and don't forget that Tantalus is looking to fill a couple of more senior roles as well.
