Ubisoft Considering Tom Clancy MMO
Posted by Mike Fahey at 12:00 PM on March 21, 2008
Following the news that Ubisoft has secured the rights to the Tom Clancy name, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot revealed in a follow up conference call plans to look into creating an MMO using the Tom Clancy name. No word on which Tom Clancy brand would be involved or what sort of gameplay would be involved, but Guillemot did mention the possible cost of such a venture - upwards of $50 million. That's quite a chunk of change to spend on creating a persistent world filled with people hiding behind things and shooting each other. I cannot even begin to imagine how such a thing would work...unless perhaps they went with a game model similar to PlanetSide, with instanced combat zones for players to team up and take on. It would certainly be a fresh take on the MMO sector, one way or the other. Intriguing. We'll keep you posted.

Goodie, somehow I expect a cheap modern paint job on a generic fantasy MMO. And you can be two factions: Multi-ethnic good guy peace keepers sanctioned by the UN or Generic White Guy Terrorists (with a few latinos worked in for flavor).

Good god. I'm picturing Splinter Cell online. The kind of game where you log on, and get instantly stabbed in the back from an unseen enemy.
It would be kind of neat to play in a game where everyone is stealthly trying to kill each other, though. Kinda like a super ninja fight.

@Anyways: Ya know I think a spy one on one would be BAD, ASS. But, you would need clever gear options that were in league with tracking, etc. I mean, sometimes you can't find the last guy on Gears, and tha'ts tiny. So, if you had heartbeat sensors, motion tracking, etc, I thin there's a loooot of potential for a "Hunt" 1v1 multiplayer.

I think that there are now more Tom Clancy games than there are Tom Clancy books.

I'm thinking a New York-sized in-game world, everyone playing as spies. No civilians, no gear upgrades, no quests - just kill as many as you can before snaps your neck. Then you start over. A gargantuan sneaky deathmatch.
I would play that.

They're already planning another Tom Clany game? After the recent release of Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 which was packed with glitches and bugs, they're now enjoying all their monies they stole out of our pockets and now they're planning to milk the Tom Clancy name even more? Until they learn to acknowledge their mistakes in game quality control and patch up the bugs, I refuse to buy another Ubisoft game.

Shrug. Maybe some could be soldiers, some could be spies or intelligence. The Chinese, Russians, Israelis, Brits and Americans all working with and against each other. Yeah, this could be really cool. Let's just hope it's not everyone versus the Middle Eastern fellow and the mad South Korean.

I like how everyone and their kid brother
is now making an MMO.
And they all have to go up against WoW.
It's like they're all trying to create
a new social networking site to go up
against Facebook.

@JohnnytheFuture: You know developers often say that more people in a shooter multiplayer doesn't always mean more fun, and that's entirely true with ARENA style combat. But, given the size of something like Oblivion, if the entire MMO let players take and hold territory, up untill capturing the enemy HQ and a server reset, I would be in HEAVEN.
The amount of ingninuity, support, and skill required for a project like that to be succesfull would be monumental, though.
Warcraft's fine for the RPG, grindtillyoudie crowd, but I want an MMO evnvironment that's dynamic, where the effects of faction control are integral to the gameplay. Plus, I love COD and BF in that, unlocked class items doesn't mean you'll kill beginners outright, you just have more accessories to choose from.
I'll just end up ranting about all the possiblities everyone can imagine so I'll cut it short here...

@Absent Blue: You and me both, brother. You and me both.
I'm a firm believer that a "war mmo" or "shooter mmo" (in line with something like a cross between Battlefield and Planetside) will break the stagnation. Given the studio and the aquired name, this could be awesome, or horrible. One can always hope.

What made PlanetSide great was squad tactics that impacted a global battle and the variety of vehicles and weaponry. You could customize your character to use heavy guns, sniper rifles, assault weaps, pistols, and knives. You could play the all-around grunt or a stealthy infiltrator, or use a number of vehicles to fly your buddies to and from the battle or roll around in massive tanks and even mechs.
One single player could have a huge impact on the state of a battle, but you also needed friends and sometimes lots of them to turn the tide of a war spanning an entire continent.
I'm not really sure how or if that could ever work in a Clancy game. I love the SC and R6 games to death, but I don't see any of those game types fitting into the MMO or MMOFPS genre.

At least it's not LOTR-style fantasy shit, but c'mon fellas, stop greedily looking at WoW & thinking MMOs are the holy grail. If players get even an inkling that it's the same old shit, it will be doomed.

Dear Ubisoft,
Please give me the tactical, open world, territorial based FPSMMO I dream of everyday. Using the Tom Clancy name is all good by me, something like GRAW would be fine. Huxley appears to have dashed my expectations and you've been oh so good to me.

For some reason, I doubt this will happen in the way people think it will happen. It will not be a Splinter Cell-type stealth game. It'll be more like using the Rainbow Six engine in a game like Frontlines, if anything actually ever comes of this.

I swear, whenever a CEO or the like speaks to analysts or shareholders, the phrase "Massively Multiplayer" just HAS to come into play thesedays. It's like the secret phrase to instant buy-in.
I thought the mass influx of MMOG announcement 2-3 years back, and the subsequent failure (whether reaching launch or not) or virtually every one, would have taught these people a lesson -- not every single game/idea/genre/IP/franchise can be made into a MMOG.
I know you look over and you see WoW making more revenue in a MONTH than your game will likely EVER make. But that doesn't mean Ghost Recon or RollerCoaster Tycoon would make a good MMOG.

I'm surprised no publisher has attempted to make a modern day military shooter MMO modeled on the Planetside gamestyle. Novalogic seemed to be in a great position with their Joint Ops engine that could render utterly massive landscapes but no one has heard from them in 3 years now.
