Week In Games: Shoot The Core
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 1:00 PM on March 24, 2008
The wait for more Final Fantasy VII is almost over for North American gamers, as this week's biggest drop is arguably Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII for the PSP. It joins a pair of well known ninja in the week's new releases, which is also heavy on action and real-time strategy. A slew of Wii shovelware hits, excluded from our list of new releases, but there's something for everyone!
Let us know what you're picking up this week in the comments.
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII (PSP)
This fanfic fodder prequel to the PS One classic Final Fantasy VII makes its way stateside.
Dark Sector (PS3, Xbox 360)
Sci-fi. Third-person shooter. Black ops. Krull.
Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword (DS)
Team Ninja brings stylus stabbing action to the DS.
Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath (PC)
C&C 3's first expansion features more units, more wrath.
Viking: Battle for Asgard (PS3, Xbox 360)
Sega's other axe-battler is steeped in Nordic mythology.
Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 3 (PS2)
Kid Naruto, radical ninja, in his third fighting adventure.
Universe At War: Earth Assault (Xbox 360)
The RTS harvests a 360 port.
Octomania (Wii)
The waggle puzzler with a Puyo Puyo pedigree.
Harvest Moon DS Cute (DS)
More farming, role-playing fun, with extra cuteness for girls.

Crisis Core? Looked interesting, but since I have a DS and not a PSP, I think I'll go for Dragon Sword.

Wow.
Still no mention of Opoona, the lovable, family friendly tramp that will thrust his bon-bon at your face in a completely suggestive way.
And now, a short, descriptive story about Sony and their products:
I remember, many years ago, when I was a man that lived a full life, or at least as full a life as a 10 year old child could live. Then, as if springing forth from the void itself, a mechanized destroyer of happiness entered my world. My dreams were from then on haunted by the things this bringer of destruction introduced me to; obese Italian plumbers, carnivorous pink blobs, blue murderous androids, even demonic hedgehogs that could appear out of thin air to devour your soul. My life ended the day the engine of my downfall walked upon my doorstep. That is, it ended until the day that the angelic-savior came into my life. An angelic savior that had the same sole function as the doom machine, but was amazingly inferior at completing this task.
The doom machine's name was Sness. The angelic savior's name was Plai Stashun The Third. In case you haven't noticed yet, I am telling the story the opposite as it really happenned. The SNES introduced me to gaming and made me happy. The Playstation 3 set out to destroy everything and everyone I have ever loved.

Crisis Core looks nice, but I haven't found myself much interested in the more recent FF games, much less spin-off of old ones. I'm sure I'll find myself with a copy of it here in the next year or so anyways. Although I'm looking forward to Dissidia. I shouldn't be picking up anything new anyways, way too many games to catch up on first. Chronic incompletionist here.

Well this was an easy one. Ninja Gaiden, and if the CC3 expansion comes on Steam i'll pick that up too.
I'm really, really divided about Dark Sector, mostly because DE's last game was exactly what i hoped it wouldn't be (the quintessential generic FPS), and Dark Sector looks like a loving tribute to RE4 and little beyond it. I'll wait for some reviews and word of mouth, unless they do a demo. That would really help me decide

about a year ago spin offs started really hurting the appeal of main lines for me. i will be staying as far away from crisis core as possible. at least ff8 and ff9 had no true spin offs, only minimal fan service payed in some "fighting games". new graphics and flashy textures tarnish the memories of resourceful storytelling or the emotions conveyed through giant eye shapes and genius deformed limb manipulation. some people never noticed real artistic talent and the deep thought behind scenes in ff7 but im afraid for those that did crisis core will forever keep those fond memories buried.

@excel_excel:
Simply being a budget puzzle game doesn't mean it's crap shovel-ware like the titles you listed. Octomania is being published by Atlus. You know, the people that brought us Persona, Trauma Center, Odin Shpere, Etrian Odyssey, etc. Just being published by Atlus doesn't make it good of course, but it's definitely in a class above other crap shovel-ware like the games you listed. It's a quirky Japanese puzzle game, and for $20, I'll probably pick it up.

Very pretty, looks really cool and you'll spend the whole time pretty much mashing the same control over and over trying to ignore that fact and enjoy the cool looking-ness of it. Come to think of it that's pretty much the formula for Devil May Cry as well.

@CHU BOI: There is only one attack button in Crisis Core so that would be why it's a "one button" game. However, blocking, dashing and dodging all play huge rolls and there's a Hard mode that most definitely is very hard. Even normal can be really hard if you do the optional missions and such.
I really like it.

Hmm, Crisis Core. Last year I looked at it as being the reason for me to finally get a PSP (It reminded me of Kingdom Hearts and I'm a KH whore). The graphics are absolutely scrumptious but I'm hearing it's a one-, no, Win-button game. I think I'll pass. Gameplay trumps graphics when it comes to handhelds for me. I think I'll be playing Dragon Sword this week when not playing Brawl and CoD4. The touch controls are intriguing and I just have to see it they work.

So I pirated the game already, and it's actually a lot better than I thought, even having tried the Japanese version previously. The combat is more fun now that I know what I'm doing (though it's not exactly Kingdom Hearts), and the story is very well presented, though a little baffling at times. I would have liked to play as the other SOLDIER members, and having the same sword through the entire game is a little weird, but nevertheless, it's hard to have any real complaints about Crisis Core.
Like so many others have already said, this is one of few games that make it worth having a PSP.

No brainer for me, Crisis Core baby! Ninja Gaiden for ds can wait till May and i still need a little convincing for Dark Sector and Viking: Battle for Asgard both for PS3.

Crisis Core is basic. Only get it if you're interested in the sub-story, because gameplay-wise, it's very dissapointing.

Just bought a PSP this week. And I couldn't be any less interested in CC than I already am.
Square is trying my patience. How do you know when you have milked the cow too much? When the cow itself gets sucked into the milking machine.

Crisis Core snuck up on me, didn't realize it came out this week.
Of course I never finished FFVII, so I probably shouldn't play it anyway....
Yeah I had an N64 when I was a kid, I only bought FFVII a few years ago and never got around to finishing it. Go ahead and scoff...

Damn it, I want Crisis Core! Can't really shell out any cash at the moment, so I'ma have to wait.
It is cool to see both the PSP and DS get a big title each. Question is....Zack or Ryu?

Crisis Core is the best game on the PSP system that I have ever played. It plays just like a real console game, it doesn't feel gimped or downgraded from a real console game, Square Enix went all out. The Story is great and doesn't embarrass the Final Fantasy VII name like some of the Compilations have. The story is amazing and really fleshes out the characters of Sepheroth, Cloud, Aeris, and most importantly Zack and Genesis. The graphics are stunning with some of the best CGI scenes paired with them. The game play is great, the fighting plays like kingdom hearts does. The writing and characters are great and the english dubs are impressive, one of Square Enix's best games since Final Fantasy X. With this Patapon, and God of War, it's a great month for the PSP.

I chose a great time to buy a PSP. First God of War: Chains of Olympus and now Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. Now all I need is the portable copy function for my PSP.
