Miyamoto Signed Super Famicom Going For $US 1,475 On eBay
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 2:02 PM on March 25, 2008
Here's a funny story. I was at this same Nintendo World Store signing event with Shigeru Miyamoto as "press" and had the man sign my own game device, a Nintendo DS. For some reason, and against the advice of my co-worker who also attended, I continued to play that DS until the signature had completely worn off, rendering it not only devoid of novelty, but collector value as well. Wait, here's the funny part. Nathan Smart of The Game Rag fame has decided to clear up some space by selling his Super Famicom, along with a few games, with Mr. Miyamoto's signature. It's currently going for $US 1475 at time of publish.
Ha ha ha! Just imagine if I'd say, set aside that Nintendo DS until the Lite had appeared or simply shelled out $US 150 for a back up. Regardless of the profit I could make, it wouldn't be worth the hilarious story of me flushing money down the drain.
For an even better tale of throwing away money, remind me sometime to spin you the yarn of placing my Game Boy Advance in the garbage as a joke, then forgetting to remove it before the janitorial service disposed of it. It's a sidesplitter!

@TheCleaningGuy: Kenzan!: Yes, I know it's QUITE shocking. By the way, who's this 'Megaman' I keep hearing about?

I'll never understand how anyone can pay for a signature. They're so easily forged and besides, if the autograph wasn't given to you personally, who cares?
I've never been one to go out of my way to get an autograph (although I did wait online for hours once to get Neil Gaiman and Yoshitaka Amano's autographs and met some cool people in the process) but I might have to rethink that in the future.

I would pay him that much if he never did that huge fake smile he always has in pictures.

The Game On exhibition is on in Melbourne at the moment and they had Al Alcorn in to talk about his role in designing Pong and the Atari 2600.
I came SO fucking close to getting him to sign my Atari 2600, but they wouldn't let me take it in with me.
I am VERY bitter about that.

The sad thing is, if you look at the pictures in the auction the third picture shows a close-up of the console and it's clearly absolutely fucking filthy!
I'm amazed Shigsy was willing to touch it! In fact that's probably why he's pulling at his shirt with this fingers, not to show what's on the shirt but to get the dirt off!

@Polywhirl: I think it goes back to olden times, when a persons signature held a greater meaning, and it actually meant something when someone would give you their word. Basically when people were more honest.
Granted these days it's meaningless, but that doesn't stop me from coveting my Stan Lee signature on the back of an ADV flier....

@ThisCharmingMan: @Erwin: I agree, I think meeting the person is the important thing, but an autograph would be a nice keepsake to commemorate the meeting.
And ThisCharmingMan, I never pegged you as a Morrissey fan! Did you know I like the Megaman games?

Removing a collectors signature off a DS Lite for what could have gone from upwards of double or triple its original price due to your sweaty palms, then have intentions to remove a Game Boy Advance from the trash to having it unintentionally thrown away. I thought I was bad with gadgets (i.e. lost or destroyed bluetooth headsets, cellphones, PS3).
So what's the real news here McW? Nathan Smart (aptly named) cashing out, or you fucking up?
Not to offend you or anything, but I just found your personal story more interesting. No hard feelings!

I agree. It's more the fact that you're meeting them. Otherwise what's the point?

@psyburn: My friend and I must have been standing right next to you, because they pretty much shut the door in our faces too, despite getting there while it was still dark. We have a picture of the door oh so close by with our sad, sad faces. :'( But oh well, got some pictures of him while he was waving to the chanting crowd outside. That was a pretty cool sight to see...all these people were pumping retro systems in the air and chanting various Nintendo terms.

I always thought part of the novelty of 'autographs' was to remember a time when you met such a person, and essentially take you on a stroll down memory lane whenever you glanced at this object scorned with an ominous signature. I was never an autograph seeker, but I still don't understand why someone's signature on an object fetches such ridiculous sums of money. Hell, if I met Morrissey, I wouldn't ask for an autograph...and I know some of you are aware of my slight obsession with his music...

molotovwars: You can't really do anything but frequently check internet news sites such as this one. The Shigeru Miyamoto one was held in September 25th 2005 and was advertised through Nintendo newsletter emails. However game developer signings do not occur very often.

Where can I get notifications of US signings from game developers? I would have loved to go to NYC to meet Miyamoto had I known about it.

I won a signed DS Lite by Hawthorne Heights at a Fusion Tour event. Hate the band, played the DS. The signatures got wiped off as well. I don't think I would have done that with a Miyamoto signed DS though.

Oh yeah, just noticed. Miyamoto signed it "Miyamoto "Boobies!"". What's up with that? Or is it some sort of japanese symbol, and I'm accidentally being very offensive?
Either way, it's rather unusual.

That signing has to have been the most depressing day of my life, and has changed me. My pals and I arrived 4 hours early, only to be cut off near the cut off point, mostly due to the line going crazy and people cutting. It doesn't seem to be a big deal, but that was one of my very first signings, it really has given me lack of confidence on long lines and overall just accomplishing tasks. It's something I think about frequently...
Too bad most game devs don't do signings in the NYC area.

I am a firm beliver in the philosophy that signatures are worthless garbage. That's why I give mine out so freely. Some people value them as something they're not. Hell, some people even consider them apologies for destruction of property. "Hey, we damaged your 360. Have a signed picture of me to put on a pedestal!"
Either way, I feel bad that you lost out on easy money from tricking rubes, McWhertor.
Though if you feel like losing any other gameboy's, I'll gladly take em.

I had Miyamoto sign the marquee for my Donkey Kong arcade machine and my girlfriend had him sign my LE Mario Bros GBA. I can't imagine ever parting with either of those items.
@psyburn: Cutting that day didn't benefit anyone. They handed out wrist bands around 2am. One guy cut in front of us. We sat there silently knowing he would waste hours sitting there to be turned away at the door. I was satisfied once I saw Nintendo's security kick him out of line when he reached the entrance to the store.
