GDC Gears of War 2 Vids Available on XBLM
Posted by Flynn De Marco at 5:40 AM on March 26, 2008
For those of you that missed out on GDC and Cliffy B's epic entrance (see what I did there?) you can now experience the magic for yourselves on Xbox LIVE Marketplace. In two separate videos (available for free), Epic Games President Mike Capps and Lead Designer Cliff Bleszinski tell you all about what you can expect from the fllow up to one of the biggest games of 2006. Also available is a video documenting the technical aspects and features of the updates Unreal 3 engine by Epic Games CEO and Technical Director Tim Sweeney. All three clips are available now for your downloading and viewing pleasure.

@Erwin:
I got the same message about 5 times before giving up on the tech demo vid. I've already seen the the other vid when it was posted following the GDC. I guess I will giving it a shot later tonight or tomorrow morning before going to the office.

The tech demo does not appear to be available at this time. Keep getting error 80070570 whenever I try to download it.

@mouroutaru:
The multi is dependant on who you play with. A group of three friends online (though it can be a pain getting in the same group in ranked...at times it involves guessing >.<;;) is a blast, especially if you work well together. I mean, picture co-op, except with four intelligent people on your side, and four intelligent locusts on the other.
The net has it's issues, namely the massive advantage that the host of the game recieives due to lag, but if you have a decent connection (or host, heh), it's a lot of fun.

I had heard bad things about Gears mp, so I've yet to give it a try, but maybe I should throw it in there and see for myself.
The co-op element of the campaign was some of the best gaming fun I've had. I would really like to see what they build off of from the first and stealing some ideas from bungie would also be nice as other's have mentioned.

@Atheist Jew: Agreed somewhat, but even without a solid story, Gears's characters were extremely likeable, and I hope that remains, story or not.

@Collapse The Control:
Oh, indeed, Halo 3 has tons of extra stuff. That's what I want for Gears 2, as unlikely as it is. What I mean by Epic having beaten Halo is the core gameplay.
I've played both with my 3 main gaming friends, as well as CoD4. Out of the three, none have built the sense of commradarie (spelled wrong, probably >.>;)that Gears had. Sure, it could be because we are 4 people, and so the team size matches us like a glove, but it's more then that.
I enjoy the fact that per round, you have but one life to live. It really builds the 'cover your and your team's ass' concept to it's peak. Losing a quarter of your manpower makes winning quite a bit harder, while losing two people makes it near impossible (assuming the teams are of equal skill). Where as in Halo, there are tactics, yes, but it's not nearly as important, it seems to me, since you'll just respawn in 3 seconds.
And, as a personal thing...I loathe people jumping ten feet in the air when I'm trying to shoot them >.<; That, and getting killed within moments of facing a skilled BR user, which, I'll admit, is likely my own fault, but it seems a little less balenced then Gears's Lancer. It's nice to have some time to duck into cover before dying suddenly, which brings up two other things;
Movement and the Down status. In Halo, you can jump high into the air, yes. But, I prefer that in Gears you have essentialy 3 speeds or movement, if you count rolling. There are times I want to move faster then I do in Halo, maybe to duck past a wall or whatnot for some cover, but I can't unless I had plenty of time to before getting shot.
Then, if I am to slow, I get knocked down. But, with teamwork, there's always the chance I'll be saved, which makes me all giddy :3
In general, I just largely prefer Gears' core gameplay over Halo's. I think it emphasizes teamwork and strategy quite a bit more in it's core game (Execution, I think is what most people play) then Halo's Team Deathmatch.
I am damn envious of those special features though, and the matchmaking system. *grabbyhands* Please to give to Gears2? ; ;

@diablodevil2: I hear ya, but there is a difference between what the game IS and what the game can DO, ya know?
Gears being a TPS & Halo being a FPS.
Gears having just 4v4 & Halo having everything a standard Multiplayer game has and then a ton more.
There isn't a game out there can beat what Halo 3 offers: 4 Player Co-Op Campaign, Saving films of matches and campaign to view later and save pictures from that go to their website, as well as the site having on record all the matches you played with every little stat recorded. And then a slight edit to characters and maps for good measure.

Ah yes, now I can relive Cliffy B. revving his fake chainsaw weapon, backed by epic heavy guitar music. What more can a gamer ask for...
Ah yes.
Something useful.

@Collapse The Control:
IMHO, Epic has already outdone Bungie ;) But, I just don't care for Halo as much as most FPS players, I think, heh. But, the features that Bungie makes are certainly enviable. Save films should be standard in all games where they could possibly be cool (like, not RPG's :3)

If Cliffy confirms that the game makes references to past Epic titles like Jazz Jackrabbit and Jill of the Jungle, then I'm sold.

@diablodevil2: Oh man, I'd LOVE to have Saved Films & Customized Characters in every game I play MP in, especially COD4.
If COD4 had the setup like HALO 3 (Save films, pictures, map editor, online stat tracking, character customization) I would marry the freaking disc because i'd be on it all the damn time.
But, i'm not getting my hopes up for EPIC to outdo BUNGIE, maybe IW will get something better done in 2 years.

@MrMcdoobie: I don't do drugs:
That and the torque shots that blow through minds with their complete and utter unlikelyness...
I only bring that up, because at the CAD lanfest, DO, I got a torque off on a guy in canals...he was on the middle bridge, against the wall, and roadie'ing toward the side halway...I managed to stick his little hump locust hump from the other bridge just before he made it past the wall...lordy I wish I could see that from his view, and others, like in H3. That, I feel, would make an awesome game perfect (assuming the net issues are delt with).

Gears is one of my favorite games of all time. Looking forward to Gears 2.
Some things I'm hoping (demanding) for:
4-player co-op
matchmaking
better online netcode
next-to no glitches in online mode

@ThisCharmingMan: I didn't play the MP more than a few days (Got way too into Rainbow Six) but all the problems with MP I never really dealt with. But i'm well aware there were things that pissed off a lot of gamers. I was pissed from day one, no matchmaking?! I thought the game was "next-gen" lol. Yeah, i'm very picky about what makes a good MP game.

Oh, next time I head into work I need to get the "gears of war 2 covers".
Apparently if everything on the cover is to be believed, then geow2 will have 4 player co-op and 16 player online.
Also i've got covers for nascar 09 and madden 09.

2 Things I want out of Gears of War 2:
1 - 4 Player Co-op Campaign (every game should start doing)
2 - Matchmaking with a Party system for the Multiplayer. (like Halo 3 or COD4)
Either way i'll be getting this game.
