You Know You Want Official Devil May Cry Cardigans
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 7:30 PM on March 28, 2008
The Devil May Cry series has been a lotta things, but masculine is not one of them. Something about all those exposed chests and red coats and wonderful haircuts. So it's poignant that the official Devil May Cry range of menswear - due to be released in Japan next month - will forgo hoodies and caps in favour of gear including a couple of exquisite cardigans and leather-pocketed polo shirts. With tiny, elegant belts attached, of course. They'll come in two styles (Dante and Nero), and at a price only the most fashion-conscious Capcom aficionado could bear to pay, with the polos priced at USD$75 and the cardigans at USD$105 (Nero) and USD$125 (Dante). Looks a lot, but for the convenience of having a belt on your shirt, it's totally worth it.

Looks like you have to pay extra to get truly ugly fan clothing.

I can understand there's going to be ugly game related clothing, but what the hell were they thinking with that giant pocket on the short sleeved Dante shirt?

Yes, exceptionally ugly.
Now on to another point: Why is it that people have the idea that being a good-looking male = not being masculine. In terms of mannerisms and linguistic mores, I should think Dante to be even nauseatingly and excessively masculine. And in terms of appearance, I don't really think he is feminine in a significant or noteworthy way. He's just handsome is all.
And does the assertion that Devil May Cry doesn't feature masculinity reflect a value judgment? Is that to say that the game isn't as good as it would otherwise be? Should all games feature men with necks three feet in diameter, flat buzz cuts, and hideous Arnold Schwarzenegger faces like UT3 and sundry other games that have been left to soak in testosterone days, not minutes, too long?
I posit that it's not that Dante et al. are feminine, but that characters from other games are fantastically, grotesquely, and teratologically hypermasculinized.

DMC and Skinhead wear? (btw how many traditional UK skinheads (non-racist) including me are into gaming anyway? handfull?)
Oh man they wasted the Cardigan and the Fred perry-like design Polo with that stupid acc.
Did they want to make a Village People crossed with Trojan Skinhead style?

You know, the cardigan and polo are pretty ugly, but they have more items in the store link. I thought this was pretty nice: [www.enter-sis.com] Sort of reminds me of some of the print shirts I see at H&M or Jacob Connexion. Still a bit too price heavy for me, but not everything in the store is absolutely hideous.

I can alot of gamers wanting to buy the t-shirts, but just how many of you have been waiting for the "official" DMC stole? And they offer the Nero or Dante version, not much difference just red or blue. The polos are incredibly average. And the cuffs on the cardigans make them even less appealing. Maybe the fashion styles of some japanese gamers makes these items a must have for them. But I doubt anyone beyond the diehard DMC fanboy crowd would show much interest in the polos or cardigans. I do like the tshirts for myself, but when am I ever going to wear a "stole"? A scarf, yes. But not a "stole". Maybe next time Capcom will offer some official DMC loafers or boat shoes.

@shikaningen: You're right, but I don't think the accusation of other games being hypermasculine is the driver so much as cultural differences. I'm not inclined to speak for the west in general, but americans in particular (of which I am one) cast aspersions on males who are, for lack of a better phrase, well put together, by which I mean groomed, dressed, not drooling, and so forth.
I agree that it's difficult to say that the DMC cast is really that effeminate, but put Dante next to Marcus Fenix (or that soaring pinnacle of humanity, Duke Nukem) in the cultural context, and well, you get "dantes is girlz lolz."
