360 To Get 1000th Game By Summer
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 3:00 PM on March 14, 2008
Seems like only yesterday that I'd walk into an EB Games, stroll over to the 360 section and see...The Outfit, 99 Nights and a couple of pre-owned copies of Kameo. Not anymore. These days it's pretty much a grown-up console! According to Microsoft Europe's Chris Lewis, the 1000th 360 game will be released this summer, a figure that includes both boxed and downloadable titles. Keep on truckin, MS!

@RedFive:
Your mistaken. Nearly all PS2/PS1 games are backwards compatible. I got my PS3 fairly recently just this last December and my PS2 games work fine with it. Or are talking about the temporary null in the sell of the 80 gig PS3?

@otimus:
Actually there are 2,571 PS2 games last time i checked which was fairly recently. not sure about the original PS. There is a list of PS2 games on wikipedia, I would provide you with a link but I can't get the site to open right now for some reason.
So according to the article there will be over 500 xbox 360 games released between now and June? lol talk over saturation. "What? Recession coming? That means quanitity over quality is perfect" lol. Either MS is planning on pulling what Atari did in Xmas 1983 or that number includes original xbox games. in which case MS may be reaching 1,000 but Sony is reaching roughly around 3,500. Perhaps they are counting games proportional to how good they are in which case Bio shock, Halo 3, and Mass Effect would quickly fill the gap among a few other games.

@baked ham: If that's the case, then PS3 *had* those games, but new PS3 owners don't have back compat -- so they don't have access to them!

More like around 2,000 for the PS1 only BC, and around 4,000 for PS2/PS1 BC :x
There's a lot of PS2 and PS1 games!
Even vastly more if you count all regions.

ESRB lists 457 games for Xbox 360 (this would include XBLA). Add to this your Xbox games that are BC and that is your 1000.
PS3 had +1000 games out of the box and +2000 if you bought a PS2 BC model.
Wii has over +1000 already if you include Wii/VC and GC games.
Why is this news again.

@ShaggE: You're wrong. No other way to put it. EA's crap vs quality ratio is much higher than a company like Activision or Ubisoft. Let's look at their 2007 releases (and as a note I'm only going to cover Xbox 360 releases because it's the only system I had all year long that I can give an accurate judgment on):
For EA Sports, you have:
NCAA Football
NCAA Basketball
Madden
NBA Live
NBA Street Homecourt
FIFA
NHL
NASCAR
skate
Tiger Woods
While I'm not one to judge Tiger Woods, NASCAR, NBA Live, FIFA, or NHL as I despise the sports, I have read nothing but positive reviews about all but NBA Live. I know from personal experience skate was amazing (and most people who played it beyond 5 minutes will tell you the same), Madden and NCAA (while for some they may just be "another copy of last year's game") for those of us who enjoy football games, they're not bad just they're for FOOTBALL FANS. If you're not one of them... then don't knock the games just don't buy them.
Now how about their non-sports division?
Boom Boom Rocket
Medal of Honor Airborne
The Simpsons Game
Def Jam Icon
Command and Conquer 3
Harry Potter OOTP
Wing Commander Arena
The Orange Box
Need for Speed Pro Street
Rock Band
I think I covered them all, but regardless I think the point is obvious: they make very minimal shovelware. None of those games are completely awful, they're all definately playable, and there's only one flippin' movie game.
If you need me to do our good buddies at Activision or Ubisoft let me know, but just remember, one rotten tomato out of a group of 20 doesn't make the entire crop bad.

@Lemming To The Sea: Of course every company is out to make money. But EA is the biggest Shovelware peddler in the mainsteam game industry, as far as I know. And when shovelware sells, it gives a lot of developers the idea that they can half-ass games too.

@ShaggE: I listed two of the main offenders.
Then again, I guess it's possibly my perspective that a company who's in it... zomg big shocker... to make money isn't a bad thing. I still am a firm believer that EA buying companies isn't nearly as bad a thing as everyone is making it out to be, because I think that with a larger bank account behind the studios they're buying up they could do amazing things.
Remember, there's SEVERAL reports that since buying up Bioware nothing has changed at the company due to the dirty dirty fingers of EA now being firmly lodged up their collective ass as gamers like to think. And besides that, why the hell would you invest a large amount of money into a company like Pandemic or Bioware if you wanted to just shift them towards the next Need for Speed or Madden game? And also, what's to say they would make games like GTA or Mass Effect a yearly deal? They've never done it in the past, and anyone with half a brain would not believe that EA would never buy a company only to ruin it.

If they're spinning it to include backwards compatible games, then that's just a lie. PS3 had more than 1000 games on the first day, if you want to play it that way.

@Amazon_Chris: You do realize EA doesn't make very many movie games anymore, correct? I think they only still have the Harry Potter license. I don't know if you have tried the Harry Potter games and for kids platformers... they're really not bad just, suprise, they're made for kids not adults so the games aren't meant to be enjoyed by us, the Kotaku crowd.
But I don't consider The Godfather or The Simpsons to be "movie games" because they're not meant to be tie-ins with a theatrical release, they're just games based off of movie licenses that are seperate stories.
You'd be better off saying some shitty Activision or Ubisoft movie game, stop giving EA unnecessary heat.
(and yes, I have made it a personal mission to get Kotakuites to stop hating EA so much and start hating the real criminals of the video game world)

On a more useful note, I searched the 360 games list on xbox.com and 798 showed up. That included back compat games/XBLA/multiple versions of same game etc. They do have a lot of games, and technically speaking there likely will be 1000, but it's a bit of spin, of course. Last count I saw there were less than 500 games for 360, but that includes all the ones that are announced but not yet released. Less than 200 for Live Arcade. About 450 original Xbox titles were released. Something tells me that 1000 titles includes Xbox original games.
