Bully: Scholarship Edition Sounds Like It Should've Been Held Back
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 11:40 AM on March 6, 2008
Canis canum edit? More like caveat emptor, kids. We're hearing the Xbox 360 version of Rockstar Games' Bully: Scholarship Edition could stand a few more weeks in the lab, according to reports of bugginess from unsatisfied owners of the game. Reports of game killing lock-ups and audio glitches abound at message boards across the internet, with a handful of readers writing in to vent about their own issues.
Word from the official Xbox forums indicate frequent freezing, resulting in lost gameplay time, amid bouts of skipping audio. Add to that a choppy framerate for the PlayStation 2 port and you have a bunch of unhappy customers. Kotaku reader Matt was plenty pissed to have lost a good portion of his own progress when the game locked up, forcing a reset.
We've contacted Rockstar reps for clarification, but haven't heard back as of publish time.
R*'s PATHETIC port job: Bully 360 freezing (among other glitches) [NeoGAF - thanks, Matt!]

This is a real issue with the current gen consoles - developers seem to be taking the stance of releasing games on time, patch 'em up later. It was for similar reasons that I returned my copy of Assassins creed (ps3) for a refund.

"It was for similar reasons that I returned my copy of Assassins creed (ps3) for a refund."
It had some frame rate issues, but they were very, very mild. What, I wonder, was the problem? I almost returned mine because of the tiny, tiny text that I literally couldn't read. Was that it? 'Cause that ticked me off something shocking, but it was a UI design problem, not a performance issue.
On topic: I agree with Pax. It's simply not ok to release a Beta as a full game or program. Games get more complicated by the month, and sure, they'll have glitches here and there. That's what patches should be for. But something 90% of people will notice in their first play through simply should not be accepted. I think the solution is to make an example out of different games. Let's buy games that work well, and hold off on the crappy ones. Even if we wait 'til after they patch it, it will still show them that we won't buy half a game - showing them there's no point in releasing it without the fixes.

@Campion: yeah, i saw that odd quarter-turn myself. and the standing characters "seizure-ing" but I've not had it lock up yet. It does seem like this is exactly the sort of thing QC would have seen & that they released it anyway. oh well patch is on the way.

@Iwata: If you want to win, go ahead - we're all imagining the problems.
But I've got both versions in my home as well, and I've seen them both within the last week too. I do visual art and graphic design, and I work in QA at a game company. Sorry if I trust my senses more than your testimony.
You're free to differ, of course. Or maybe you have the exact 360 model they apparently did 100% of the testing on before releasing this port. Either way, good for you.

Funny, given how i'm midway through chapter 2 and have yet to run into any framerate issues outside of the initial opening cutscene. I've played through the PS2 version 4 times with the last being mid-february and the 360 version framerate is nothing like the PS2's.
I'm also interested in knowing what areas in the game that you complain they haven't upgraded.
Iwata
Campion
Posted 10:23 PM 19/3/08
@Iwata: Interesting information, but I'm really not seeing it on the screen... Meanwhile, the areas where they clearly didn't upgrade the original graphics are obvious -- I wasn't searching for them, they found me.
Even if I granted your point, though -- which would be painless for me since I don't mind the PS2-level graphics in the first place -- they obviously dedicated about zero percent of their graphics budget toward getting the framerate up to par.
I'll assume you're not saying they deliberately rebuilt the game to mimic the framerate of the original, which was slow even for the PS2?

It isn't just a straight port. They've rebuilt the graphical engine for the 360 and wii version and redid all the textures and everything.
Like i said before, pretty much every aspect of the game has taken a noticable graphical leap with the 360 version. The only thing i would say that looks the same as the PS2 version are the facial animations and textures.

I'm saying I don't think the improvements in the general appearance have to do with reworked graphics, but are simply due to the higher resolution of the machine output. I thought Bully was graphically one of the best games I'd seen on the PS2, but I'm not convinced that much work went into improving the art assets for the 360 port.
I'm very happy for Wii owners, magnanimous fellow that I am.

Are you serious? The 360 version looks a lot better then the PS2 version. The graphical differences between the two versions are immediately noticable. The only thing that looks similar to the PS2 version is the Facial animations and textures.
The environments and characters ooze detail on the 360 version that one cannot find in the PS2 version. I was pleasantly suprised at how much of a graphical leap was made between the PS2 and 360 version.

I disagree with you. I plugged in my PS2 version on the 60 inch TV, and then compared it to the 360 version, it looks Miles better. They did improve graphics (at least touched them up, added new textures) - and IMO this was enough to make it that much better.

I'm an admitted Rockstar fanboy. I liked Bully a lot on the PS2, but I couldn't play it because the framerate made me nauseous. So I had very high hopes for the "upgraded" 360 version.
1) The graphics aren't improved. Obviously the 360 has higher quality output, but the in-game objects are still the same objects. The 360 version just allows you, for example, to see the seams betwen the head sections of the models much more clearly than before. The textures are still rough. Many of the HUD icons are still so rough you can use the jagged edges to count the pixel lines.
2) The music does drop out for a split second from time to time, not for any immediately apparent reason.
3) All the loading phases are still there. They're much shorter now, but even that has a problem -- it's so badly handled that now the loading pages flash by too quickly to read the tips written on them. A 5-second load does not need three different slides -- my ADD is not quite that advanced yet.
4) Walking or standing characters on-screen -- including Jimmy -- fairly frequently freeze in a position and have a mini-seizure. In one cutscene -- a cutscene -- Jimmy is sitting at his desk, and suddenly does a quarter-second full-circle pirouette, still seated.
5) To add injury to insult, the framerate is pretty much the same as before, and still makes me nauseous.
All that observed in less than an hour of gameplay.
There's no way this stuff got by QA, so obviously a decision was made to send this out despite the problems. I'm hoping for a patch for at least some of it, but my expectations are pretty low now.
And speaking of expectations, my expectations of a high-quality game were definitely missed by a good mile or so. They had ages to do this, so they clearly could have done it much better. But they didn't, which means they didn't care to.
Boo, Rockstar. Major respect lost over this shoddy port.

If I'm busy working, and have to get a babysitter, but don't check up on said babysitter (who has a history of being a pillock), who ends-up dropping my kid on his head dooming him to wearing a helmet and suffering seizures for the rest of his life, its pretty much my fault.

My complain: why on earth do you need loading screens on this game? I understand this is a port, but Rockstar, please, you could've invested a bit of time making this port take advantage of a next gen console. Saint's Row was seamless when it came to moving around and going from interiors to exteriors, so I expect the same from high-end studios.
I hope they release a patch that fixes all of this soon. Until then, this game is going to my "pile of neglect".

I'm not sure about how I feel about this. I really enjoyed the ps2 version and was thinking of getting the 360 version, but I already have enough games that cause my 360 to lock up and reset (Saint's Row, Mass Effect, and Eternal Sonata, all of which I lost large chunks of progress to before remembering the old adventure game rule of "save early, save often").
The downside is now I will likely pass up on the game, but the upside is that I can spend that money as the ton of games coming out that I do want.
