Casual Gaming Revealed
Posted by Tori Floyd at 4:00 AM on March 6, 2008
It's easy to see that casual gaming is becoming mighty popular with the general populous. Thanks to new statistics from media research firm Interpret, there's now some idea of how all these casual gamers tick. Using its Gameasure service, Interpret rooted out that the average time players engage with casual games has jumped since last year from four hours per week to just over five hours. Interpret also found that 85 per cent of casual gamers would prefer to play free, ad-supported games rather than games that require them to pay for downloads.
The biggest discovery, though, was that the casual gaming market is ready for just about anything: casual gamers are 22 per cent more likely to seek out information about new products, and 36 per cent more likely to switch to a new product, just for the sake of change. Although I don't think this should be too surprising. Casual games are generally much less complex than more major games, so I imagine the ability to get bored of simple and repetitive actions is much more likely. Heck, shouldn't this number be higher?

@tincow: Apparently you didn't see my buddy's dad (non-gamer) try to play Halo 3. It was like watching a retarded chicken trying to hump a door knob.
He went out and bought a Wii. Bowling suits him just fine.

Eh, saying casual games are less complex is almost a delusion. I'm not sure I'd say Halo 3 is more complex than Peggle, for example. :)
Of course large sweeping RPGs and complex sim/strategy games like Civilization 3/4 are more complex than Peggle...but are most FPS/Hardcore-Action games? Not really as far as I can tell. Enemies in most FPS games, for example, aren't that much different than Orange Pegs.

@Shteve: Casual vs. Hardcore. The war continues. One of the problems with this "war" is that the community itself has no solid go to definition.
While yours deals with the amount of time played my personal definitions have to do with how knowledgeable one is with gaming. I think what separates "casuals" and "hardcores" is their input and care of the gaming community in general.
Example: I knew a bunch of dumb jocks and stupid stoners that did nothing but play Halo. They put in hours and hours of Halo time but I'll always refer to them as casual gamers. They make no active participation in the community or care about things like net neutrality or have any kind of technological knowledge or interest for that matter.
Note: I'm not generalizing jocks or stoners. I used adjectives to describe them, not to define them. I know there are jocks that are tech savvy and I loves me some reefer any day.

Popcap needs to do a Peggle remake - re-envisioned as an FPS. Casual games are like gateway drugs, I hope. Maybe then my girlfriend will play Halo...

This casual gamer mislabeling pisses me off. Read Jim Sterling's article on Dtoid, it mirrors my sentiment exactly:

I, for one, notion that we dissolve these casual/hardcore boundaries. There are people that play different kinds of games on a regular or irregular basis. I shudder to think of all the new sub genres of gamers 10 years from now, when Nintendo comes up with some new original idea that has grandparents and toddlers gaming at the same time.

Casual gamers play casual games because they don't have any not-casual games to play, sure, my mom has solitair on her laptop, She doesn't exactly have a copy of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. loaded on there, maybe if you randomly installed games onto a casual gamers computer, they might be like, hey.. maybe i should try this. (i'm not telling you to load stalker onto your moms laptop, BAD IDEA)

One awesome thing about casual gamers is their lack of fanboyism.

I can hear it now; Child walks into school with gun and shoots down 11 classmates - dismembers body into Zuma shapes.
Jack Thompson links child killing and violence to grotesque shapes used in casual gaming.

People who can play and beat minesweeper will always scare me 100 times more than folks who think its funny to make heads aesplode in FPSes.

Minesweeper dude, minesweeper. What better game to play while you wait for renders or your boss walks out of the room for a sec.

@smitty1123:
Pretty interesting description, I kinda get pissed when people try to debate about a game being "hardcore" or "casual" because my definition tends more in the amount of time you spend playing games, not the type of games you play !

That's populace the noun, rather than populous the adjective, but I will accept it as subconscious Peter Molyneux reference.

I can totally agree with this. I mean, casual always leads to more extreme doesn't it? It's that way with almost anything.
For instance, I have a friend I just met a college this year and he had a PS2 and played all the basic stuff. However, one day he saw me playing Chrono Trigger on my Super Nintendo and wanted to try it. So I got him an emulator and the rom and guess what? He beat it before I did! Same kind of story with my girlfriend who started out on Animal Crossing, but now plays Zelda and has logged over 100 hours on Final Fantasy Tactics.

I usually play "Hardcore" games... but lately I have realized I play so much Lumines casually that it may be more hours than I've put into the majority of my console games.
Lumines 2 I got used for $13AUD and it's proved a sound investment.

Gamer: one who plays games
Casual: irregular; occasional
Casual gamer: one who irregularly or occasionally plays games
So, how is it surprising that the game type doesn't matter or that people who only do something occasionally would want to do it for free?

Meh. I play about 20-30 hrs of games a week (8-10 hrs on weekends) and I consider myself a casual gamer. I only play the games that interest me.
