Crappy Looking Dragonball Movie Getting Crappy Looking Sequel?
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 5:00 PM on March 28, 2008
Does it matter if the Dragonball flick was pushed back from this summer to next spring? Does it matter that the movie looks like dookey? No! Apparently, Dragonball 2 could be shooting first quarter next year. Some of the movie's sets are still in place where it was shoot in Mexico, waiting! It does matter how the flick does, though. Whew, that's good. There is a God.

EVERYONE LISTEN UP!!!!
MANY OF YOU SEEM TO BE GETTING SOMETHING DISASTROUSLY WRONG!!!!
STEPHEN CHOW IS NEITHER THE DIRECTOR NOR IS HE PRODUCING THIS FLICK!!!!
In fact, for more than six months none of his ideas have been accepted by Fox. Remember how Fox snubbed all his casting suggestions, many of which actually fit the characters?
Besides, Chow was too busy with CJ7 when this was filming, so there's definitely no way he's going to affect what's in this movie.
Putting him on the staff list when he's doing nothing's just a cheap ploy by Fox to cheat Stephen Chow's fans into the cinemas, and now many of his fans in China are beginning to ignore this film.

it's a dragonball movie? this whole time i thought it was DBZ. But i guess it makes sense.
anywho, i gurantee that this movie will make atleast enough to cover its costs. I mean the Dragonball franchise has had like 100 years to gather a fan base and im sure many a person will go to the theater to check it out so long as the trailer looks halfway decent/appealing. Not saying that the movie is going to win any awards or be the next "No Country For Old Men", but im sure the flying will look good atleast

Anybody know the budget for Dragonball? I remember reading somewhere that movies need to earn double the production budget just to break even, (since there are also marketing/distribution costs, etc) so if DB is something like $100 million budget its going to be hard for the studio to make back their dollars. You never know though, the movie can end up a complete disaster but with the number of fans it has around the world, people will see it regardless.
If the movie does happen to turn out decent I'd love to see a sequel. This time with Kid Gohan, a good Piccolo and appearance of Vegeta.

Dragonball has a better chance than DBZ at least.

100 years to gather a fan base
Lol, I don't think the mangaka would appreciate being called that old XD
Honestly, the only saving grace I felt for this movie was that Stephen Chow was producing it, and most likely it's him and his studio handling the martial arts and special effects. Which is a godsend because seeing Kung Fu Hustle, they got that magic of Hong Kong pugilist cinema back!

I never can understand why Hollywood would be so ready to greenlight a sequel to a movie that hasn't even been released yet.

@mordennight: Bingo. I'll agree that the very nature of the property dictates a high probability that it will suck, but drawing any conclusion now, where there haven't been any script reviews or even photos of the cast in costume, is just freaking ridiculous.

@ChiltonGaines: Stephen Chow isn't directing it, however he's producing it I think. You have to rememeber whenever something is turned into a movie especially when it's either a video game or a cartoon, it's going to be different in some way. Somethings work better in cartoons then it can in movies and vice versa. I'm sure you'll be getting all the martial arts and ridiculous battles and fireballs that the show has. and I'm sure people will be flying around a lot. I doubt anyone will have silly looking spikey hair, but if you wanted to watch dragonball Z you'de just watch the cartoon. Once all the special effects are finished I'm sure we'll see what's really going on. And to people complaining that Goku should be japanese....why? he came from another planet, how does that make him japanese?

Why is everyone hating on this movie so much before even a trailer has been shown? You never know it could turn out to be pretty good. I'm not exactly a dragonball fan (just the opposite really) but come on, don't judge a book by nothing but it's title.

@DataScream:
Yeah, but with movies like Tomb Raider, Doom (an OKAY-ish movie) and Bloodrayne, and how crazy Dragonball is, can you really expect too much? Then again, as Byakko said, Stephen Chow is directing it.
Then again, I'd pay to see it even if it was bad, because at least it would be one of the best comedy movies of the year.

So, question to those claiming suckage. What are you basing that conclusion on?
And I want specifics. No broad generalizations about adaptations in general, or straw man arguments about how Hollywood is bad. I want script critiques, proof of visual suckage, etc. Show me what you are basing your conclusion on.

They should go ahead and just change the name of this to "DragonBoll Z"....
(get it? Boll.... as in Uwe Boll.... you see, he makes horrible movies.... I am making the inference that the name should be changed from Ball to Boll because it is a sure fire suck fest.... just like Boll's movies.... Get it?? That kind of wordplay my friends is comedic GOLD!)

@DataScream: Actually, I doubt there will be a ton of flying around. The movie isn't based on Dragon Ball Z, but rather Dragon Ball, which had a bit more down-to-earth martial arts, so to speak.
We do know that Stephen Chow is producing and supervising. We know that the director isn't terrible, we know that the stunts people have worked on The Matrix, and 300, and the special effects are being done by the company that did a lot of stuff for 300, Sin City, and Sky Captain and the World of Tommorow. We also know that Chow Yun Fat, Ernie Hudson, and a few other notables are starring.
It's certainly not "guaranteed" to suck, like, say, the new Street Fighter movie.

Any fan of the series is going to be sorely disappointed with these films due to the lack of continuity, story-redesign, and complete lack of Krillin.
This series has an existing fanbase who want to see their favorite stories re-enacted on the big screen. NOT rewritten on the big screen. Grandpa Gohan is alive? Krillin is gone but someone named Teto is Goku's friend instead? WTF.
If you are going to make a film that is based on an existing story, perhaps RESEARCH that existing story a little bit before just making dramatic changes. So let me guess, in the third movie (supposedly Goku vs Freiza) how will Goku go Super Saiyan without Krillin? Or will they just re-write that too?
