Do You Want To See The Glue Finger?!
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 1:40 AM on March 11, 2008

From: Bashcraft
Last week was a bit crazy. Kid has strep throat, so was out all week. There was a late night run to the hospital, where the pretty lady doctor told us that an icy pad to the forehead don't do much to bring down fevers. Instead, put them on the kid's neck and in his armpits. Never knew that!
Mini-Bash was in good spirits today and happy to be back at school. About a month earlier, we visited his class. The kids were making some sort of papercraft. They got out sheets of paper, crayons, scissors and glue. When it was time to use the scissors, the teacher asked the class to show her their scissor fingers. The entire class raised their scissor fingers in the air in front of the parents. When it was time to use their crayons, the teacher asked the class to show their crayon finger. The entire class raised their crayon finger in front of the parents. When it was time to use the glue, the teacher asked the class to show their glue finger. The entire class raised their glue finger in front of the parents.
Those curious to see the glue finger, hit the jump.

@RPGr: In the Middle East and Greece, the 'thumbs-up' symbol is very offensive. Does that make them prudes?
Each country/culture has it's own set of naughty hand signals. Doesn't make them prudes or anything.

@Brian Ashcraft: Hey Bash, looking at miniBash's face, it's telling me that he actually knows what the "gluefinger" really means. Just look at that embarrassed "I-did-something-naughty" smile he's got on...
Oh, and just to inform everybody who might get the wrong interpretation from this amusing little story:
Not everyone in Japan thinks that the middle finger means "the glue finger". In fact, I don't think many preschools / early grade schools use that analogy.
If you ask most people who have had experience in Western culture, they will tell you that it means something bad in Western society. But the same people will laugh in your face if you flip the finger at them if you're in Japan (it doesn't have the same connotations as it would over here).

@McPoogle: Understandable. One other case is the male affections as well. There are alot of "skin-ship" between males that are just accepted but would commence a series of beatdown in the U.S.
Imagine a crossroad when weighing in the stats of the god-forsaken Patriots while putting your hand on top of another male's knees.
Its the oxymoron of a culture-clash.

Reminds me of the time some Japanese foreign exchange students were presenting a project to the class and used their middle fingers to point out details. Of course it was only funny since they were absolutely clueless as to what it meant in America.

@RPGr: But Japan is a country that has a reputation for some things that we consider prudish: namely the stereotypical reactions you can recieve to showing affection to a mate in public.
I won't say any more because I have never been to Japan and I can only really get this impression through word-of-mouth or pop-culture references, so I'm not sure of it's validity. But anyway, I'm sure there are all sorts of things about Japan (and lots of countries) we'd consider prudish; the things involved just differ from place to place.
Also, your argument being that since this gesture represents something sexual it shows how America is prudish; couldn't it also argue the openness of sexuality in the society as it's used in another form of emotional expression? Just a thought.

Well, you lose more heat through your head than any other part of your body, but you have more condensed access to the bloodflow in the neck (which is what carries all that heat up to your head in the first place), and your armpits and crotch are the warmest parts of your body (hence why, in first-aid training, they tell you to put your hands in your armpits if your fingers are in danger of getting frostbite). So yeah, it sorta makes sense. But putting them on the forehead _will_ help somewhat.

I'm surprised you didn't know about the neck/armpits. The idea is to get the blood cooled down, and the neck, armpits, inside of the elbow, and back of the knee are the places where the veins and capillaries are closest to the surface.
Whenever I'd get too hot from playing baseball the first thing I'd do is pour some water down my neck and on my inner elbow. That cools you down (and wakes you up) right quick.

Lemmie see, I was told flipping someone off started in Great Britain, captured archers would have one of their two fingers, index or middle, cut off so they couldn't shoot anymore. They would wave those two fingers to those opposing armies, taunting them that they still had a whole hand. Of course people migrated to America, and let's face it, Americans can be lazy, so they reduced it to one finger.
The more you know...

@Kavatar: Read my above post. You'd have to have some knowledge of censorship, cultural perspectives and what is exactly the worst "swear" each country has.
Most are about violence. Very few cultures have the most offensive swear as an allusion to something sexual.
In Japan, the middle finger really doesn't mean anything and in many countries it certainly doesn't (although some learn it from US media).

I never had a glue finger in school. Hell, I never used a finger for anything. I just ate everything. Glue, playdoh, a one time trip with a lego piece. Actually, assigning fingers is a good thing. Prevents kids from eating everything like me. It's not a good habit to have in preschool.
BTW, the face completes that picture. It's just so smug.

I never really did understand why the Japanese use the ice-packs on their heads for fevers. When ever I'm feverish, I'm forced to cover myself from head to toe, no need for anything special, except the usual hot water or medicine. Then again they stick pieces of paper in their nose in hopes of curbing nosebleeds...

@3inst3in:
[en.wikipedia.org])
The middle finger is only what it is mostly in North America. Any other usages in other parts of the world is due to North American media influences like movies.
Also, note: in general North Americans are prudes. No more is this seen than in our media. Sexual references (which is what the middle finger is) in comparison to the rest of the world, including UK, EU,Japan, China, etc. is seen as taboo.
On the flip side extreme violence has much more acceptance in North American media and society has far less impact than mild sex scenes do.
I could make a movie with no violence and a mild soft sex scene or some nudity and it would garner an R rating. Likewise I could show the murdering of hundreds of people and as long as I don't show blood, it'd be rated PG-13 (Lord of the Rings for instance).

Is the middle finger a universal sign for F you? Or is it simply a finger out there in the wonderful world of Japan?
I have a son myself, and my wife has yelled at me many times when she sees him smile like that. That smile says "My dad is letting me do something I'm not supposed to do" so I'm assuming the middle finger has the same effect there as here in the states.

despite having spent a fair amount of time teaching youngsters, i can't say i really understand the thinking behind teaching your class a scissors finger, a crayon finger, or a glue finger, but i know funny when i see it, and the glue finger should be entered into the grand lexicon of all kotakuites. though we mourn the death of hot tears of shame, we celebrate the birth of the glue finger. such is the cycle of ... euphemistic language ... or something like that.
