Europe May Get 80GB PlayStation 3 By Summer
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 11:25 AM on March 27, 2008
Europeans saddled with nothing but 40GB worth of PlayStation 3 may have another option on the horizon, according to chatter from the scamps at CVG. Their retail pals indicate an 80GB model is incoming, with Sony Computer Entertainment reps doing a terrible job of denying it.
No comforting word on whether it will be partially backward compatible, as the current eighty gigger is, nor is there solid word on a potential pack-in. We wouldn't be at all surprised to see it packed in with some of next quarter's biggest releases, Grand Theft Auto IV and Metal Gear Solid IV.
80GB PS3 planned for the UK this summer? [CVG - thanks, Random!]

Swapping HDs won't give you backwards compatibility though ;)

Just swap the HDD if you want more space. It's not difficult or that expensive and is decently documented in the PS3 instruction book. Unless there is a functional change who really cares?

I really hope it comes with full BC and a pricetag at around €449 (or better yet, completely replaces the 40GB model and takes its price point or even lower it to even out the difference towards the dollar). Plus if it comes with anything but the DS3 controllers, I'm gonna scream.
Either way, this is probably the PS3 I will get. Sony keeps to slowly remedy all their mistakes, and if they give us Europeans BC again, it will be one of the last real headaches gone.

@Roflcopter_Down: Wants you to follow HIM!: Not in europe. Our 60 gig model was partial bc, not full hardware bc. We were screwed from the beginning. Try stamina killing bosses in mgs3 when you only have a 10-15 minute period to pull it off.
@Codexx: the only reason to import a ps3 would be if you only want to play games. The blu-rays are region locked and so are the ps2 games.

@dsmx: I'm with you, brother. DS3 and PS2 BC are musts for me to pick one up as soon as summer, otherwise I'll probably wait and try to finish off the few PS2 games I never completed (FFXII, SotC, MGS3 maybe).
Sony: bring out this 80Gb model with PS2 BC and a DS3 pad and I WILL BUY ONE. No problem. Letting me pick some good games (R&C and Uncharted, please) or packing them in would be great too.
This from someone who until about November was still firmly in the "ps3lol" camp.

I see issues with why this is such a big deal.
1: PS3 is region free(or rather, the games are encoded for multiple regions)
2: the 60 GB with Hardware Emulation is clearly the best PS3, if the most expensive(and discontinued) model.
3: Europe is used to getting screwed over with release dates. If they really cared about the PS3, the odds are that they'd have imported them for the reasons above.
I know there's a good chunk out there who can't, for various reasons, import one. But still, the fact remains, it's a good idea for most. Just watch who you import them from, Sony might sue them for removing market demand.

@Arttemis:
Sure you can upgrade to a larger HDD, but do you think casual gamer Joe Schmoe can?
Most likely he doesnt even know what type of HDD to get!
And Im not arguing wether or not you would like to install your 360 games, hell I would've liked to copy all my games right to the HDD and never touch a disc again, but thats not the point.
To play those PS3 games you need a mandatory installation, If you atleast were given a choice when you put the disc in wether or not you wanted to install and decrease the load times or just play straight from the disc, I wouldnt even have raised an eyebrow on this matter. Actually I would've liked it.
But thats not the case, and I have a feeling this issue will blow up alot bigger later this year when people are starting to run out of space.

@KEELr: Which can always be upgraded to much larger too.
Personally, if I could install all my 360 games to my HDD,even for only marginal improvements, I would... (I won't dare fill it with Microsoft's overpriced DRM-laden media), but that option isn't even available - nor is the ability to upgrade my HDD to one of my own choosing.

Here's where I read It.. might not be the most reliable source, but I dont see any reason why these guys should lie.
[forums.gametrailers.com]
So, It's a 6GB mandatory installation, and a 200Mb update after that..
So If u own a 20GB PS3 you have actually used over 50% of your HDD if u happen to own GT5P & DMC4..
Sure u could delete the data, but then you would need to go through another 15-20 min installation if u want to play them again..
This to me is frightning, what if MGS4, KZ2 & LBP has these 5GB installs?
You're shit outta luck if u got the 20GB SKU
So back ontopic, when I get a PS3, the 80GB will be the obvious choice

@Arttemis: The 60GB versions have hardware BC - which is more efficient because it has the actual PS2 hardware inside the PS3. The 80GB versions only use software emulation and, though mostly effective, still suffers from compatibility with some games and performance issues.
I was not aware of this, mistakenly thinking my PS3 was inferior in this regard. I feel a little better now, and if I want an 80Gig PS3, I'll just buy a new sata drive.

@Candlejack: Ah, I'm not really familiar with the original Xbox's games library. I've actually only noticed positive remarks about the 360-BC list... mostly because I never cared much about its titles - I didn't even buy the original Xbox!
If it's truly that bad, though, then you can consider that one more "X" on my Microsoft list! ;D

@Candlejack: The "drama around it" would only involve Sony reinstating the PS2 hardware on its newer models.
Half-a-decade-old hardware can't be that complex or expensive (seeing as how it was already done and as much has been admitted).

@Arttemis: No worries...I double post sometimes as well :P
On that topic, I didn't say that the compatible Xbox titles weren't functioning. It's just that REALLY few actually are compatible. Basically, it's as if it was non existent, except for some cases. For example, I played NGB on the 360, which was probably the only game worth playing again to me. BTW, ever wondered why software emulation of the Xbox is possible on the 360 but not for PS2 on the PS3? Well, I say there is an opening. :)
Anywho, for me, BC was never a deciding factor when purchasing a system.

@Arttemis: Seriously, why shouldn't the PS3 have PS2 hardware?
The smartass version? Because it's a PS3.
From a technical point of view, if it doesn't increase the cost dramatically, then there is no reason.
But I still don't get why people handle this PS2 BC thing so importantly. I have expressed that I would like PS2 BC on my 40GB, but heck, I doubt I'd play anything besides Tekken Tag Tournament or MGS or something. At some point it really isn't important anymore. I think that point was sort of reached 2008.
I understand that some may want to play their PS2 games upscaled, although, if you ask me, that's nowhere near worth the drama around it.

@Candlejack: (Sorry for the multiple posts; my submit-clicking finger is too eager!)
Personally - I've encountered only one problem with 360 BC (Ninja Gaiden: Black's videos seem to have stuttering FMVs). That said, I only have 4 Xbox games since the 360 was my first Microsoft console.
If, however, all future 360s were stripped of their ability to play Xbox games (or even just reduced its ability to do so), even though its library is nothing compared to the PS2's, I would consider this equally as retarded as the PS3's BC debacle.

@Candlejack: I would definitely consider that a viable argument if Sony had difficulties in implementing it... but seeing as how it was available then stripped for mentally-challenging reasons, I don't accept that.
The PS3 shouldn't just have BC, it should have the PS2 hardware inside.
Note: I don't have room to comfortably fit a 360, PS3, and PS2 in my tiny 4-person apartment. Seriously, why shouldn't the PS3 have PS2 hardware?

@dsmx: If the backwards compatibility provider inside these is the EE chips (PS2 hardware) like the 60GB models, I'd have more than one pre-ordered!!!
----
Seriously, Sony needs to bring this back since it wasn't canceled because of cost and people are still willing to pay extra money to get one! It doesn't even make sense why the 80GB has been stripped from the shelves when it was outselling the cheaper model!!! Of course the MGS4 bundle is coming, but why would Sony pull its best selling model months before then - do they not like money?
----
@Cruithne: The 60GB versions have hardware BC - which is more efficient because it has the actual PS2 hardware inside the PS3. The 80GB versions only use software emulation and, though mostly effective, still suffers from compatibility with some games and performance issues.

@wizardofoz85: Truth. But that's what a PS2 is for. Play, you know, PS2 games.
IMHO, backwards compatibility is a welcomed gift. No more. Once it gets phased out, and you even have a PS2, you should just move on [to PS3 games].
If you can't play your PS2 because of space issues, that I can fully understand (I don't like my setup full of systems either).

@Candlejack: the original xbox didn't have nearly the number of quality titles that the ps2 did. Don't you think THAT might have something to do with the fact that no one complains?
Like you say, each to their own. Personally i replay my old games every now and again, and don't want to have too many consoles taking up space (as it is now I have all 3 of the current consoles in front of my tv).

@Luke Plunkett: I think they'd live with the howls, now that the potential howlers have slapped down their money and committed to the system.
And there are others , like myself, who actively want a PS3 but cannot bring ourselves to buy the gimp model.
It was a nice trick to bring out the 40GB at e.400 while selling the 60 with BC plus extra controller and 2 games for e.500. The 60s disappeared from Holland in under a month.
Now the stock has been cleared, and the format war has been won, I either get a full-spec PS3 in the EU by summer, or a grey market 120GB/Japanese MGS4 bundle.
