Eye of Judgment Deck Building Tips
Posted by Flynn De Marco at 4:00 AM on March 24, 2008
With the release of the second series of Eye of Judgment cards right around the corner many players are casting critical eye to their current decks. Building decks in EOJ take a bit of thought and skill if you're going to create something really good so any advice on creating them is certainly welcome. Especially when the guy giving the advice is the game's designer, Yasuke Watanabe. In a recent post on the Playstation blog, Watanabe explains the intricacies of managing mana cost and casting cost when building a deck. While it might seem overly complicated and mathematical at first (which it is to a point), once you grasp on to the concept it's quite a helpful little article. So if you're a EOJ deck builder and really want to get the most out of your mana, this is definitely the post for you.

@Laughin_Caulk: Hear hear - DS version was a steaming pile of recycled dog food on summer pavement.
Honestly, I kinda want a sequel to EoJ, or at least a version with different art and sound - I'm not a fan of bleedingly oversaturated colors and a grand total of 2-4 overly loud rawk songs for music. There's an idea Sony can take right now - same game, different art/sound/animations, cross-compatible with the other fug version.

@Seiven: That was a curiosity of mine. How big/active IS the community for EOJ? That and is it tough to find someone online to play with. I had heard a lot of pop surrounding the game when it first came out now I barely hear anything about it till now and it made me wonder how well the game was doing....

Card-based games are a real bad Habit of mine, especially when they've got a good balance and strategy to them.
So far I've put down hours and hours on Cap vs SNK CFC (DS version SUCKED) and then MGA2, both awesome games.

@Secran: Have a feeling thats why the expansion costs for the software update to play with expansion cards, just so they can at least force the card pirates to pay something for what they are ganking.

@icepick314: Yeah, and if enough people stop buying the cards,WOTC and sony wont bother printing any new expansions. Everyone losses.

I love this game ... and the cards from this new set really shake things up. There are specific attacks against creatures with dodge ... that's a big deal! I'll have to check out the post.

I think anyone remotely interested in board games/fantasy can pick up and enjoy this, but the whole buying cards things is something to wrap your head around for those who arent into card collecting. Ive already spent more than $200 collecting different cards, for those that dont wanna spend the money I see no problem with copying cards and using them. This game definitely emphasizes strategy over powerful cards so you dont necessarily get an advantage, plus youre enjoying the game.

@pylon_trooper: It's sad cause MGA2 sold well in Japan and got a rerelease even, but in the US it was a huge flop. Sad, if it had done better I bet we would have seen many more Acid titles.

@Knight-Zero: Also there are cards like Freedonian Wanderer (Fire, 2/1) that will grant the owner 1 mana when they summon another creature provided Wandere is not on a fire field. So again, there are exceptions.

@Knight-Zero: well Parametic Holy Feast (0 cost, gain 2 mana via discard) which, pending the card you throw away, can either put you over or close to the mana cost of your remaining cards. Also Summoner Mesmer's Lapse (0 cost, discard to reduce opponent mana) will throw away another card. Granted neither of these will increase your overall mana really and may end up hurting you in the long run, but unless you're deck is designed to go the distance or completely suck at strategy matches generally shouldn't got that long. Like I said this is about all I have at the at the moment and when I get better cards I will switch out but until then these work for me and allows me to have a little extra cost.

@Sparx: Exceptions? There aren't any unless you use specific mana inducing cards.

@NPlace: I agree there, NPlace. It's a really unsung game, MGA2. I mean, like you said, the story of the first one was much...I dunno...more MG, but the second one really hit the right notes. Fast, fun and nothing else really close to it. Everyone harps on about the good fantasy SRPGS on the PSP, and I'm not discounting their quality, but MGA2 should shine as much as they do, since it offers quality grid-based combat, good combo systems and a wide variety of items.
Plus...it's, like, Metal Gear!

lots and lots of good quality photo printer papers...
stock up on color ink cartridges...
search on Google for scans of the cards...

save yourself few bucks....

My friend and I just started playing this last night, we both bought our decks and it's actually a pretty fun game.

@pylon_trooper: MGA ftw. I thought the first one had a better story, but MGA2's card and movement system was spot-on. And the visuals were awesome.

@Knight-Zero: Course there are exceptions to that rule.
I haven't really bought any booster packs since the game came out (been busy saving up for other games first). But I built a pretty solid deck with some of the basic cards. Earth/forest/fire/water all have 5 cards, typically 4 melee and 1 caster per element. Biolith has 2 and magic cards make up the rest. I think my mana cost chimes in at about 53-54 but there are ways around that to make up the cost. I really should start buying boosters but with MGS and GTA right around the corner I'm gonan be strapped as it is

Want a game that is fun, easy to play, and has tons of deck building strategy? Oh, and it's a game you only have to buy once?
Culdcept and Culdcept Saga. It really scratches that itch for me.

The EOJ community on the official forums is awesome, I loved the idea of the game and gave it a chance. Then once I started playing, I was welcomed and quickly became a part of the active community there. The game is a lot of fun, but don't pick it up if you are adverse to a niche game that costs much more than the average high schooler would spend. It is an investment and part of the fun is the collecting.

@DragonSphere: I too would want something much more casual, with a great solid rule set, that only had say 20 cards or some small number and it was just all about strategy and how you play without needing to go buy boosters and look for uber cards. But then they would make less money...

yeah, it's not easy to get into a new card game.
and if u DO get into it, it seems to get expensive.
I played yu-gi-oh on the PC for a while, i'm ashamed to admit hehe it was good fun to kill 5-20 minutes.

My friend has all the physical cards except for 5. Needless to say he's spent hundreds on booster packs since the game has come out, even though recently his hard drive fried.
When he got the game he told me to make a deck, so I followed the instructions in the book: Pick cards that you like and put them in your deck. I did so. All the cards in my deck are common. Maybe 4 are uncommon. I have been undefeated.
I'll take a gander at the blog anyways, though.

@DragonSphere: Not that it's the same platform, but Metal Gear Acid 2 on PSP is a great card game realised in a turn-based strategy form, that is quite well streamlined. It's got some great combos and card tricks to play around with.
Unsung, really. Poor little guy.
Anyway, this game looks pretty cool!

I don't know about what it is with me and card games, but one of the reasons I can never get into them is because of the overwhelming (imo) number of rules involved - which I understand is necessary for playing purposes, etc. Shame really, because I really dig the whole concept of EOJ and the eye toy camera.
Ah who am I kidding? I'm just straight up too damn lazy to learn them

Step 1: Try and make sure your deck has a cost of 50 or less mana. 25 turns, 2 mana per turn, means a total of 50 mana. Why didn't I grok that?
