Fear Not, Red Alert 3's Full Of Hammy Cinematics
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 1:20 PM on March 15, 2008
Tesla coils, airships, yeah, we kinda expected that sort of stuff to feature in Red Alert 3. What was most vital for the game, however, was that it retain the previous title's most important aspect: the best damn live-action cutscenes this side of Wing Commander 3. And by best, I mean hammiest. So it's great to hear that, yes, things are definitely looking up on that front, with EALA's Chris Corry saying:
We really do think the live-action cinematics are a staple of the Red Alert series. We're going pretty full bore with the cinematics this time. We're going to have more than an hour of cinematics; it's almost a minimovie that we're shooting for this.And with that, my excitement for the RTS genre reaches levels not seen since the late 1990s.

Technically, Emperor: Battle for Dune was made by Intelligent Games, with Westwood acting in a consulting role. I know this because my tutor helped make the game when he worked as an artist at Intelligent Games.

I was quite happy to see Sawyer from Lost (Forgot his name) taking a part in Command and Conquer 3's Nod Campaign. :)
I'm also happy they are still doing it rather than listening to the stupid reviewers who didn't like this. Go fans.

I loved the opening to Red Alert when that came out, The one bit of music, Hell March i think it was called playing, Westwood studios proudly present... BAM! tank flies through a wall.

So glad I wasn't the only teenage boy who had a crush on that newscasters rack at the end of C&C. :-)

The FMV cinematics make the C&C series, both original & Red Alert - Without them, they'd be the same as many of the other RTS series that have popped up over the years.
Having said that, I'm probably one of the few who wasn't a big fan of the RA2 cinematics - It was interesting to see them with the cheesiness factor up to 11, but I've always preferred the RA1 cinematics for some reason.
Despite that, RA3's cinematics should be interesting. Combining RA2 style with C&C3's production style, and they should be entertaining to watch.

I don't even see how the intro to RA3 could be better than the intro to 2.
Generals excepted, C&C is a work of true brilliance. Generals is merely very good. Anyway, I hope they can get Klepacki.
After C&C3 I have a lot more confidence that they can and will do this right. Kirovs are an excellent sign.

Poor spy. :(

Damn that was classic. The actor's name is ray wise. I actually remember him in a cameo in 24 (season 5), i screamed at the tv when he showed up. I still say that he should have played as the president... (no offence to gregory itzen, he was great. At first , i thought it was gregory, not ray did ra2)

Yes there was an actress playing Tanya in certain cinematics namely her being captured by the Red Army then being interogated. You forget the guy who had the syringe jammed into him by her?

It's a different tanya then in Red Alert 2 though. Tanya Adams being a codename has being bandied about.

@DigiMish: apparently he does have info i dont. if i had photos here with me id tell you whether shes inappropriately old now or not. in ra1, the tanya unit voicework (different from the actress in cutscenes) did not sound young. decidedly. in fact she sounded like a brassy middle aged madam.

@Tyber_Zann: ive not seen anything suggesting the casting for ra3. unless digimish has news i dont, theres no information on it. theres no reason kari wuhrer might not play tanya again - its not like shes got mainstream work to pay the bills. on the other hand, i dont see why she needs to be tanya. considering it was someone else entirely played her in ra1 who looked and sounded very different, theres no kane-level character loyalty at work.
frankly, without cheesy fmv and voice work, i dont see much reason to bother with a cnc title above any other rts.

C&C 3... hrmmm...
Well, as an avid old time fan of the series, it comes down to
1. It aint no Command and Conquer game
2. It was enjoyable
I miss the days when Command and Conquer was just post apocolyptic forces vying for control of the world by pitting angry 3rd world countries against the snobby first worlders, led by GDI. Now its all zomgs, aliens!
However... you should play through C&C 3 just for the cutscenes. They are still as C&C awesome as ever.

They are going to have Tanya, but get someone else to play her. In the PC Gamer unveiling of the game, there's a quote in there explaining how Kari Wuhrer has gotten older and is out of um... the "target demographic".

I actually thought the C&C3 cutscenes were pretty good. Maybe it's because of the horrible track-record of FMV acting in games, or perhaps because I read how horrible they were beforehand, but I was pleastantly surprised. The game itself, however, was only fun for a few weeks for me.

Nice to see there putting in some proper cutscenes, however I'm still very worried about RA3 as EA gutted westwood after RA2 and the C&C series has never been as good since then. I'm not going to hype this game until we see some actual game footage.

I'm impressed. A video game developer keeping with its roots and tradition while moving into "new" and "fresh" territory. This pleases me and I hope to see other follow suit. The Command & Conquer series is one that wouldn't be the same without the hammy cut-scenes, which are thoroughly enjoyable.

@Raziel3333:
Yeah, seriously. Who DIDNT choose the White House?
The first C&C was so very perfect. From the hacked television stations, to being told to kill a village of people in your first mission as nod, to seeing the colours change on your world map as you conquered more and more places.
I still sigh and smile when I think of how golden it was, that game.

@DigiMish:
OH MY FUCK
Youtube AND DigiMish, I LOVE you.
@Everyone else
That, my friends, should be considered one of the greatest moments of gaming history. The character of Kane was insantly 'created' in that very moment. This one cutscene alone should be placed on a pedestal.
For those who dont know, Seth was Kanes 'right hand' and was the one giving you the missions up till that point. You never really got to see Kane, but Seth seemed to get more and more pissed every time you succeeded and he was forced to praise you. Finally, he sends you up against the White House in an obvious what-the-fuck-Seth move(without telling Kane) as you can see.
Enter Kane for the first time. A fictional character that has lasted in computer games for 13 years now AND played by the same actor.
Fucking A.

@t0yrobo:
I think I would have been about 10 as well. When C&C ran in dos (it would run on our family Windows 95, just in a dos box) and was in glorious 640x480 (or was it 320x240?) resolution. It was the first real 'game' i ever played, only because my stepfather got it for christmas (and I totally took it over, I feasted upon it like a madman).
I blame C&C, and that single cutscene, for my video game love to this day. I had never seen anything so hardcore, nor watched anything in movies or tv anywhere as enthralling as the story and game laying itself before me in the C&C franchise.
Shit, I must have played that very end cinematic that showed C&C2 (I remember that mech blowing up some humvees or something) a million and one times with my friends, as we dreamed our dreams and talked our talks of how awesome the next game was going to be. Back in the days of internet scarcity when we had no idea that this game was not really coming anytime soon, lol.

Most memorable moment of the C&C franchise?
Seth asking me to attack the Pentagon, telling me that he 'thought I was ready'.
Me IRL: Wtf, no way.
Enter a handgun from offscreen pointed at Seths temple, a single shot is fired and poor Seth is splattered all over the wall next to him. Someone kicks him out of his chair and sits down in his place.
That bald man who took his place would forever tantalize my tastebuds and make me spend monies on every C&C since.
Seths brains are forever imprinted in my mind. :)
