Formula 1 Comes To Gran Turismo
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 7:30 PM on March 18, 2008
Like I said, Europe loves Gran Turismo. In return, Gran Turismo loves Europe. So much so that series creators Polyphony Digital have broken with tradition and included an F1 car in Gran Turismo 5. For the bargain-basement price of 2 million in-game credits, you'll be able to pick up the Ferrari F2007 and take it for a spin. Poignantly, this is being called "God Mode".

@Astrofox: Actually I'm hoping GT5 (final) will feature winding stretches of public road from around the world... the kind you see on Top Gear like the Isle of Man, maybe some Japanese touge roads too.
That's the #1 thing I miss from the first NFS game (the one published by Road & Track). The winding roads were awesome in the Viper.
@Raikkenon: I would do 10 times better than Hammond in that car, ive never raced anything that fast but im quick in a Radical
Radical is a totally different machine. I've driven single seaters (formula ford), a radical and a couple of rally cars (currently in an Evo IX). The radical was freaking awesome, but not scary at all (considering the speed, handling and braking). I think an F1 car would be very scary and make the Radical feel run-of-the-mill in comparison.
@FranUnFine: To me, slowly driving around in circles in a Suzuki Swift or something similar isn't racing and it isn't fun. It's boring.
I actually feel totally the opposite. One of the things I love about GT is the inclusion of "normal" cars. When you can win a race in a 80hp car against cars with similar (or more) power, you know you can drive. Races are at their most exciting when you have to maintain the best line and not even touch any of the other cars to win.

How a Veyron would be an F1? Put a speed bump at the start line :P
Seriously, any corners on the circuit and the F1 would cream the Bugati.
But how about a drag race? Didn't Clarkson on Top Gear mention that the Bugati would get to 200 mph faster than an F1, even if the F1 started at 100 mph? Or is it just a gearbox thing?

@FranUnFine: I know what you mean. I beat GT3 100% and I admit some of the races were kinda boring. Still. Even with slower cars, a race is a race. Driving an underpowered car teaches a lot about the basics and forces to learn how to conserve speed.
@Badben: I'm sorry I didn't really understand how your opinion was different from mine! From what I read, we seem to have the same point of view on the fun and challenges that come from GT. I also prefer the "normal cars" races to the crazy formula cars races. I remember how it felt when I first unlocked the formula car in GT3, and I remember going right back to my "hachi-roku" and subie! I hope GT5 has some decent rally sections.

I'm certain that Sony lost the F1 license so there will be no more F1 games from Studio Liverpool. In one way I'm actually relieved; they never did anything new with the franchise. I was always waiting for a game centred not around a single season but the history of the sport. You know, the 'ring, a BRM, the chance to race as Moss etc.
Having said that, I remember seeing references to Hamilton signing with EA Sports which scares the shit out of me.
PD should make the next F1 game. But I don't want to wait another two years! ;o)

Kaneda - I get you point, but typical Gran Turismo nuts (like me) feel it the other way around (I reckon). Personaly I find all the high down-force high-power races get very samey and boring (plus too easy); it's the street car races where the real interest lies. The varying acceleration vs. varying ability to carry speed through corners, and the detailed nuances of the various handling is WHERE IT IS AT for the true car nut :-)
Oh jeez now I'm nearly weeping I want GT5 so badly...

@Kaneda: Well, to be honest, I lost interest in GT with GT3. I really loved the first one, but for me personally, there were just too many what I like to call "shopping kart races" in GT3. They're like the side missions in Mass Effect.
If I have a racing game, I don't want to be more or less forced to drive in too many small cars. To me, slowly driving around in circles in a Suzuki Swift or something similar isn't racing and it isn't fun. It's boring.
For what good is a car park of over 200 vehicles, if - even in the real world - I wouldn't want an deven actively refuse to drive 75% of those. The first GT really had the balance perfectly nailed, while in GT3 I - at a certain point - found myself doing nothing else but driving around in my 1000HP Ruf for fun with no will left whatsoever to finish the game.

Haha, I remember F1 cars in the Pro Race Driver series... some maniac AI would come up and bang into you, your wheels tangle up, and you both go flying into a wall, removing wheels and ending the race.
The pic also reminds me how much I liked the Toyota Motor Triathlon car in GT4, that thing was neat. I'd love to see what it takes to make a real one adjust its height (it's automatic, right?)

I've got to weigh in on this Veyron vs F1 Car debate. Absurd! The F1 machine would bitch slap that small-penis large bank account toy all over the place. It has an uncompromised highly efficient aerodynamic design, doesn't have to conform to street and legal standards, weighs significantly less, has more usable horsepower to the wheels at lower rpm and with a much more aggressive torque curve due to the lack of four turbochargers that the Veyron needs to spool up, has a much lower center of gravity and significantly less ground clearance, and has basically has a monster pair of cojones that doesn't require a set of Italian fashion designers to approve the exterior. The F1 car, on a race track, would simply bitch slap the bitch that keeps slapping the Veyron's bitch.

If you set up an F1 car purely for a top speed run it'd totally mince the Veryon, no problem. The main requirement would be the removal of the downforce as they are usually set to produce 4Gs in 140mph turns. Get rid of this aero-drag, put in the right gears, and you'd be looking at something very close indeed to 300mph. I wonder if any of the F1 teams can be persuaded to do this? Just for a demo of course :-)

@Balance_In_Life (PSN): Indeed. It also has far more downforce from the aero package, more advanced tyres and breaks, etc. An F1 car can go from 0 to 100mph and back to 0 in less than 5 seconds. The Veyron is fast, but too fat to keep up I suspect...

From what I found we are looking at 700 HP about. Plus it weighs only 1300 pounds with a freaking driver. The Veyron has 987 HP and you are looking at around 5000 pounds with a driver. The Power to Weight ratio is on the F2007's side. I'll still take the F2007 every freaking day of the week.

the only thing about gran turismo, is that you have to learn to slow down on the corners, and learn to take them at EXACTLY the right angle.
also, you kind of have to mess around with some of the "guts" to tune your car to a way that really suits your racing style.
but, after you do that, it can be REALLY fun. although it takes a lot of practice, and can be frustrating if you aren't a fast learner.
