Galaga, Pac-Man, Bejeweled and Others Coming To iPhone
Posted by Brian Crecente at 3:20 AM on March 13, 2008
Yes, yes, everyone is jumping on board the iPhone bandwagon, and since I own an iPhone that makes me very, very happy.
The latest recruits include Namco, PopCap and THQ with talk of Pac-Man, Galaga, Bejeweled, Zuma and Peggle coming to the device.
"We're very excited about Apple's new SDK and reaching every iPhone user through the new App Store," said Scott Rubin, vice president, Sales and Marketing, Namco Networks. "We can't wait to show off great new versions of arcade classics like PAC-MAN and Galaga that use the revolutionary features of the iPhone and iPod touch."...
"Apple's become an important mobile game platform with the iPhone SDK," said Jason Kapalka, co-founder and Chief Creative Officer, PopCap. "The new SDK gives us the tools to innovate and reinvent games like Bejeweled, Zuma and Peggle. With the new App Store we can reach every iPhone and iPod touch user on the planet."
...
"The iPhone is the mobile platform game developers have been dreaming of," said Scott Zerby, vice president, THQ Wireless. "We're looking at how we can use the iPhone's innovative user interface to create new game experiences for our big brand entertainment partners that consumers love."
All I gotta say is that they better be making use of some of the iPhone's neat capabilities and not just porting it straight over from a cell phone build. That and why the hell haven't we heard about Puzzle Quest? Don't make me email you Infinite Interactive!

I think Bejeweled would be very good on this. Even faster than the mouse.

Ugh. Can't they make these games for a platform that *doesn't* make you look like a total douchebag while in use?

Someone needs to develop a docking controller, or even a bluetooth one with a cradle to hold the phone.

@yashichi8bit: If you watch the demo of their developer package on the apple website, they have a demo game they built in two weeks. It is essentially a 3d Gallaga that uses the motion controls built into the Iphone to steer the ship.

Love it! Now I'm actually happy I have one!
No buttons = forcing some innovation?
...or just putting buttons on the screen

I dont see how Galaga would work all that well on the iPhone. You have to have some serious dodging & and constintly shooting skills & I just dont see how they would play well on a touch screen. Unless you set it down on a table and had both sets of fingers on the screen, maybe.

As long as all this stuff is possible on the iPod touch, since I'll buy a bloody iPhone when it becomes the last available cell phone on earth.

So why do the companies have to keep re-hashing these damn puzzle games?
Why on earth can't we have some really nice ones like Monkey Island etc etc ported. Not everyone wamts puzzle games.

"Pac-Man, Galaga, Bejeweled, Zuma and Peggle"
Wow. You mean, the very same games every modern phone have?
I'm pretty unimpressed.

Its too bad the 3rd party emulators I have on my iphone don't work that well. Too slow, choppy. Hope these new games have a smoother frame rate.

I absolutely love my iphone. It has changed my life, it genuinely has, no bull. This is music to my ears. I spend most of my time during bus journeys surfing the web so now I can play some games too. Exciting times ahead!

I like what Nokia is doing with their N-Gage gaming platform, instead of the Apple method of having it locked down to only a certain type of phone.

I can see passive touch-based games being friendly with the iPhone but how will furious button-mashing work?

Seeing as how my 7 month old 80gig iPod just went tits up(luckily Costco has an unlimited return policy...I got my $ back), I'm not too keen on jumping on board another Apple product any time soon.

Nice, this is exactly the sort of support I was hoping for when I bought my iPhone a couple of weeks ago.

Looks like apple is gathering speed. I hope this encourages those gamephobes to be more open with their platforms.
