Gallery: Bionic Commando Rearmed
Posted by Flynn De Marco at 6:20 AM on March 14, 2008
We already checked out Bionic Commando Rearmed at GDC and since the Capcom Digital Day build was the same and they really weren't giving out any new details (besides the $US 10 price tag) so until some new info arrives you can occupy yourself by perusing these screens.

Jesus Christ dude you seriously compare a 10$ arcade game to a 40$ full price title and demand the same level of quality? You must be completely out of your mind...

Errr, what!? Ok, not even worth arguing since we are from different worlds.

@greeble:
don't get me wrong - 2.5d can rock - look how good G&G came out on PSP, I think that title displays how good you can get it, with a lot more effort.
I've seen the vids, and yeah the animation is fluid, but, but the whole is only as good as the sum of all its parts..
@chef
they really need "chunking up" don't they..

I like how the levels look, and the inside shots are a nice combination of modern and retro. I think that the the problem is that the character design really doesn't stand out at all; they just kind of blend into the background. It makes me think of other bland XBLA designs in how it has that weird dull look to it.

@gique: I think the biggest difference you see in the 2.5D remakes are the animations and fluidity which don't show up in screen shots. I thought the graphics in psp Castlevania were awesome for this reason.

Having only a Wii60 right now I won't be purchasing this because deep down I'll know the visuals could have been better and I just can't support MS's size limit on arcade games.

@gique: Touche, sir.
Personally, I don't mind (obviously). I found the screenshots to be reminiscent of Flashback (as I mentioned) or Out of This World, where the character sprites were tiny and almost played second fiddle to the scenery. Naturally the level of artistry present in those games is unparalleled by any standard, but I just got a little twinge as I remembered the old 640x480 days.
Ok, enough out of me. The only way to tell what the game's like is to play it, and hopefully there will be a demo on XBLA.

@Gambrinus:
the graphics were like that because it was on an NES, even if it was supposed to resemble it, it's not well done - there was an arcade version of biocom before that you know.
and please dont be bitchy, I've played them all, and if you're happy with that level of art, then that's your opinion, because i'm entitled to mine, as you are yours, and just because mine doesnt tally with yours, or that I want to see higher standards from capcom USA, you don't have to make out like I didn't play them.
It's not trolling, or hating, just an opinion, but then again I guess come banhammer monday I'll see how much of that matters...

@gique: May i remind you what the original looked like: [www.armchairempire.com]
The artwork and color palletes of the remake are pretty much in the spirit of the original. I guess you never played it. There is no reason to reinvent a _remake_. Thats what the next gen Bionic Commando is for.

I saw this at the Capcom presentation at Wondercon and I might have been more impressed with this than any of the other games they showed. The extras look great and remote play on the PSP makes me really excited.

@gique: I see what you're saying, and I do agree, to an extent -- I also get nostalgic for the days when the artistry of a game was obvious and seeping out of every screenshot. Especially Capcom games. I just think that games these days are judged by a different standard. Maybe they shouldn't be, and maybe I'm getting a little too starry-eyed and caught up in the 'next-gen' graphics upgrade explosion. It's also a matter of opinion, obviously, and who's to say I'm "right". All's I know is, for whatever reason, I looked at those screens and thought, "damn, that looks fun." I prefer to be stupidly optimistic and blissfully ignorant, I suppose. If I took every company's game in a historically comprehensive context, I probably wouldn't enjoy ANY game. I mean, really, when it comes down to it, there have only been two or three games (Portal, Psychonauts are the only two that come to mind) that have made me enjoy a game as much as I enjoyed SMB3. Doesn't mean the rest weren't great games, though.
Anyways, you could just as easily find fault with my arguments. Ignore the slap-happy fanboy in the corner.

@gique: I agree with gique. These graphics are pretty crude and uninteresting. I think it's the washed out color scheme they laid over everything.
I've never really played the original Bionic Commando, so I guess it could all be a throwback to the retro thing, but I'd rather it look pretty myself.

@MisterSleep:
call my glasses rose tinted, but i remember capcom games looking like capcom games, with strong well rounded and visually unique identities, stuff like capcom's disney games, and their arcade stuff, remember chariot and midnight wanderers?? alien V Predator? .. gorgeous stylised standout sprites, beautiful artistic backgrounds...
Can you really say what this game was without looking at the title?? or even what YEAR it may have been developed?
I guess I'm in the minority judging by the flack I've been getting from my opinion, but I was judging it from a professional standpoint, and took capcom's rich visual history as a point of refernce, but sadly I can't see any visually redeeming features in ANY of capcom USA's XBLA offerings, they're all suffereing from a lack of dynamics and impact.
there's nothing wrong with C&C looking like C&C - but capcom's games should look like capcom games, strong, head and shoulders above the rest and uniquely stylized and identifiable.
I know Capcom USA was advertising for an art director recently, maybe they fired the last one?
Maybe this is the reason.
anyways don't mind me , ignore the old grumbling man in the corner.

This looks awesome! The people mentioning that the artwork is dull don't realize this is a remake of the NES game! It looks great as a remake i think. Nothing too fancy, no insane graphics, just an awesome remake! Can we get a release date? :O Capcom is bringing out some excellent titles! :D
I think the money lies in remakes like this one. Imagine a Megaman 2 remake!

@Benjo:
My mind keeps drawing comparisons to Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins on the PSP. Granted UGG was a totally new game, and BC:R is just a remake, but I have faith in Capcom.
I still thoroughly enjoy the "retro" BC games (especially the GameBoy version), so I'm really looking forward to this.

@gique: I mean, I see your point and I'm all for being critical in a medium where copying seems to be the norm. But C&C was a good game, and the 3/4 camera angle market isn't so super-saturated that another entry warrants reactionary criticism. Just because every game doesn't have a perfectly unique, identifiable style doesn't make the style bad. I personally think that the side-scrolling sections have more atmosphere and mood to them, granted, but the comic book guy commentary is a little less than constructive.
I will concede that the screenshots could show more action. It's tough to judge a game based on screenshots alone, but the action footage we've seen so far looks pretty awesome, and I think that they've done a great job updating an old classic, and it'd be well worth the purchase, IMHO.

Like most dowloadable "neo-retro" games, it'll probably fun for about 10 minutes. If it's half as hard as the original NES game, then it'll be fun for 2.

If you remember from the NES version the "incursion" maps (where you were able to collect continues) were overhead. They changed it on the GameBoy version, though.

But like the run n' gun and vehicle sections in Starfox games, great gameplay must never go uninterrupted.

There's absolutely no style or identity going on in those shots - if it didn't have a name to those top down screenshots you'd mistake it for command and conquer.

I'm psyched. I loved the original, and this definitely looks like it'd be worth $10. Hell, I've paid $60 for less.
And I'm actually diggin' the primary color scheme... a welcome change from brown + light bloom. The backgrounds and overall look and feel of the side-scrolling sections remind me for some reason of Flashback, which ain't a bad thing in the least.

Wow. Rememeber when Capcom was just putting out ass? Constant SF remixes and MEgaman games. Seems theyve gotten their heads right. Theyve got a nice balance of new IP's and mining old ones in a new tender way. Now they have a nice mix of full fledged games and XBL PSN content. Incredible turn around.
