GTA IV MMO Is "Very, Very Doable"
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 11:00 PM on March 10, 2008
World of Warcraft with car jacking and hookers! Rockstar boss Sam Houser says that a Grand Theft Auto IV MMO "is very, very doable and is a very, very compelling proposition". What's more, Houser calls a subscription console-based MMO "the Holy Grail". Definitely, GTA does seem like fertile ground for a MMO. If Rockstar is plotting this, how it will keep the MMO from turning into pure anarchy should be interesting to see. And hey, if the game ends up as MMO chaos, that too will be interesting.

It should be total anarchy from the START. One gigantic neverending deathmatch.

it would be cool if there were specific gangs to be a part of... but, without that, i think you would have an average life-span of 10 seconds in a gta mmo.

I think the mass chaos could be tempered by more intelligent police AI and gangs who put hits out on players who cause the police to show up too often on their turf. If player persistence also included warrants and the contracts out on your life, you couldn't just log off to escape.
This, coupled with some increased penalty for death, and the fact that you can't use cheats, should keep people sneaky enough that it wouldn't be pandemonium. Maybe bounties placed on the characters causing the chaos? Cash in the bounty for killing the troublemaker?

As much I love GTA games I don't find idea of GTA MMO appealing, because world where every gamer is trying to be the baddest gangster there is, does not feel real anymore, just like WoW.
I think WoW was one of the greatest games I have played until I hit lvl 60, and then I realized that it was just a competition for finest dress in one of many giant amusement parks with false sense of purpose and power.
Approach that Eve-Online took is the only real way to go for MMO's.

Actually, isn't Sony Entertainment Online trying to create a similar type MMO, the game called... The Agency. If Rockstart were to try to make GTA an MMO, i can imagine it having a similar machanic. Such as having different factions in a city. A large city mind you...

And that's why I don't want a GTA MMO. Well part of me wants it, part of me knows just the sort of idiots that'll be all over the place, I mean I love GTA but I can't stand playing online except with people I know.
Also the idea of getting stuck with the GTA equivalent of a Camry because all the good cars have been snatched up? Well actually that's sort of funny.

I'm not a huge fan of multiplayer either - random multiplayer matches seldom provide the satisfying social aspect of gaming it aspires to be. And letting the ***holes that make online gaming so horrible loose in a GTA world would only makes things far, far worse.

Well, if anyone didn't know, theres an online multi-player mod for GTA VC and GTA SA already available on the PC. It turns the game into an MMO, you connect to servers through some 3rd party program. Each server is usually very different, with different game types available. There are your RPG servers, and your DM servers and quite a couple more.
Your RPG servers are actually quite fun, because you get a job, specialty and you join gangs, sell drugs, guns.. do jobs.. and you can even be the FBI and the police. It's really an interesting concept that works pretty nice. Granted, the servers have GMs on at all times to deal with people that cheat and don't play by the rules.

I could see this happening. If they increase the police presence, less chaos would ensue...No more random shootings( well less) no more mowing down every 5 pedestrians you see (well, every 10 now), Less Let's jack an old ladies car to stop traffic. In the game, not in real life... They need to decrease police presence in real life, though.

A persistent GTA where you could improve your characters' stats and collect and upgrade cars you found would work, but I really can't comprehend any way to keep it fun and interesting long term. I might play it a few months, but is worth going to MMO-type detail if people will finish the main storyline and just give it up soon after?
If they wanted to do an experience leveling system, it'd be pretty boring just driving around doing standard, cookie-cutter gang member assassinations and stuff like that. Sounds like CoH with less potential.

"Very very doable?"
Could R* really set it up so that you could have say, 1000 people in a city, all interacting in realtime, able to see and interact with anyone in line of sight? And do it bug-free?
Even more, could they put enough cities and area in the game that 10,000 people could coexist and not just be heaped together?
It's no small feat even when you're not dealing with an action game...

@Geckosan: as dumb as it may sound i think one of the things that holds a MMO back on the console it the lack of communication input.
If the 360 would support a keyboard and mouse that might help.
until there is a decent way to communicate with other players a console MMO will fail.

Interesting idea, although some of the games dynamics would have to change substantially as how the game currently works would turn the world into a non stop warzone (although an extremely fun one!).
Houser is correct that a console based MMO is the holy grail of gaming (at least from a money making perspective), I'm surprised that no one has tried it since PSO.

GTA multiplayer on the PSP was damn awesome. Yeah, forget the MMO and just have a twenty-four player online mode. Nothing too player heavy...just enough for a few carloads of thugs, a crowded highway...and stacks of AK-47s.
Vice City Stories was awesome for multiplayer. Utter freeform chaos.

I can't help but feel they would need to make two server types: a "chaos" server where people can run around and do just whatever the ungodly fuck they feel like, then a more "realistic" server which... while not a "roleplaying" server, per se, shouldn't a cop in the face with a rocket launcher would result in you having some unfun times with the quickness.

I honestly wouldn't mind a GTA MMO, but I think GTA4 should at least have some online multiplayer action.
I mean if GTA2 had it, why not have the feature for a "next-gen" game. For those who haven't played the multiplayer, Rockstar offers GTA2 for free. So get some friends to download it and play it mutliplayer.
So please Rockstar, make future releases of GTA have a online multiplayer option.

I don't think I'll ever play another MMO, unless the industry mindset changes about them. MMOs always seem to reward time spent playing over skill. I understand that companies want to keep their players for as long as possible (and paying the subscription fees, for as long as possible) but surely they can make content fun instead of repetitive?

@peAr_nectAr: Well think of the standard MMO having quests and items to collect and apply it to GTA. Resources such as drugs, ammo and cash. Also I like the idea pylon had with the bounties on particular gang/clan members who top a leader board of most wanted.

But then you are (in theory) guaranteed updates and steady service. Also, it would knock piracy on the head. Look at WoW with it's subscription. Sure it makes them shitloads of money, but without it the servers wouldn't be nearly as good.
Also it weeds out the idiots who just play games to cause trouble.

I could see the chaos being kept to a minimum with powerful NPC gangs registering players who commit chaos on their turf, effectively making those who cause a heap of strife in their hood to become premium bounties.
I reckon it'd make for some serious fun with power-plays between factions.
