Hands On With 1942: Joint Strike
Posted by Flynn De Marco at 4:10 AM on March 14, 2008
Fans of the 194X franchise of games are going to be excited about this offering from Capcom's Digital Day, 1942: Joint Strike. This new title takes its inspiration from the original games being a top down vertical shooter and long time players will no doubt get a rush of nostalgia playing it. But this isn't your father's 1942. The graphics of course have been completely revamped in HD and while it still retains its 2D gameplay, all the graphics will utilise a 3D engine.
Also diverging from the original is the storyline which takes place during a fictional World War II. All the trappings of the real WWII are there, but Capcom assures us that this WWII takes place in a completely alternate universe from our own. Up to two players locally or over online can play special missions outside of the single player campaign and teaming up has its advantages. Special weapons and power ups are available as well as extra special Joint Strike attacks that will send your enemies into tailspin.
My time with 1942: Joint Strike was entertaining and much like Commando 3, I really enjoyed it despite my initial misgivings. The graphics looked super sharp, nearly photo realistic, and the controls were smooth and easy to get used to. The graphic treatment of the menu system was great too, providing an olde time look that added some nice character to the game. If you are a fan of the original series of 194X titles, this is one that should definitely be on your list of downloads. And in case you were wondering (and I know you were) 1942: Joint Strike will be available in two flavors, XBLA and PSN for $US 9.99 this summer.

@Modus_Operandi: No way were you going to turn that thing over unless your name was Sisyphus.
Wow, that's obscure.
While I agree that 99.9% won't do it, there are some hardcore people out there who might. I mean, there are some pretty hardcore vertical shooter fans out there.

@okenny :): But that's really it though... you can go with the Wii's Virtual Console to play what you may have played before again with the same experience.
Well we do get Castle of Shikigami 3 and Monkey King which for all its silliness does look fun. Wii also gets Star Soldier R on Wii Ware which will most likely be a day 1 download for me. Hopefully they release that Kaorus / Chaos Field / Radilgy disc in the states, though the Freeloader can take care of that little issue if not. ;)

@battra92: But that's really it though... you can go with the Wii's Virtual Console to play what you may have played before again with the same experience. You go with PSN and more particularly XBLA to play new types of shumups or pick from a choice classics that may have updated graphics, mechanics, and online play. I think you may want to pick one up ;)

@Desfunk: I enjoyed that control scheme when I was a child but my body just doesn't like pressing the button to fire. Analog and trigger shooting (both are analog actually) feels so much more sustainable at my age :(... my old old age of 29 :(

I'm a huge fan of the 194X games, and while this looks pretty sweet, the desaturated color palette has me crying. Just look at these glorious screens from 1942 and tell me why they have to go with such a drab look.

@TitillatedOcelot: Why shouldn't they? That's all the Megaman series has been for over a decade now. Oh wait, I forgot, those were _bad_ remakes. My mistake.

I love the Strikers: 1945 series, but not those other 194X games.
Still, I'd take it if it wasn't on PS3 or 360.

Ummm...
Since when have the 194X games been in anything but an alternate WW2 universe?
I'm a military buff, and I don't remember there being gigantic fortresses flying in the sky with hundreds of guns firing LASERS!

It still seems odd to have a Japanese game company develop games wherein you fly American WWII aircraft in an effort to destroy what are pretty clearly patterned Japanese (and German) aircraft... hey, to the winner go the spoils, I guess.

@BonkUGood: You're implying there were people who played Ducktales and did not like it.
I would suggest those people might need to be forcibly re-educated.
Not that I have strong feelings about that game or anything ;)

@battra92: Only an asshat would turn their TV. I got Ikaruga for the Gamecube. At that time flat screens werent that popular. Most people had a plain tube. No way were you going to turn that thing over unless your name was Sisyphus. And even now with shiny lightweight screens no one is going to tip or go through the trouble to do that. Its an interesting bullet point on a game back, but not a realistic gaming option.

My only concern with the realistic looking graphics is the bullets flying your way. With the old color palette the bullets stood out and was a bit easier to avoid (at least on NES). How does the enemy fire look in this 194X? From the screen shots so far, I'm afraid it'll be too dark to differentiate the bullets from the dark background.

@Modus_Operandi: The only other option is to turn your TV vertically (a la Ikaruga's option) but only an asshat would do that.
Only an asshat would include the option or only an asshat would turn his TV on its side?
At work we have some pretty nice 4:3 LCDs that can pivot to vertical so HDMI->DVI + turning the screen sideways could be an option for some, though most likely a huge minority. I love Ikaruga but I'm not going to turn a TV on its side just for one game.

@gique: So, barring a custom screen in the arcade, how would you have done the game differently?
In case you haven't noticed, nearly every new TV is 16:9.
Are you proposing we get rid of vertical scrolling shooters?
I'm just trying to see your point.

Modus_Operandi
Posted 10:53 PM 19/3/08
@gique: Where does it say that the game will be in 16:9? It can be 4:3 with bars on the side as every shooter that has appeared on new gen consoles has been. Look at Triggerheart for the 360. Works fine. If it was good enough for Ikaruga then its good enough for this. The only other option is to turn your TV vertically (a la Ikaruga's option) but only an asshat would do that. The game will be the "shiznit".
Damn Capcom. Youre on a roll here.

i guess nobody at capcom thought that doing a vertically scrolling game on a horizontally wide 16:9 display was a bad idea?
kind of like playing sonic on a celphone screen.
