Hudson Bringing Tetris to WiiWare
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 3:23 PM on March 12, 2008
This summer, Hudson's bringing Tetris to WiiWare. Hudson's hooked up with Tetris Online to make the worldwide online WiiWare version possible, complete with up-to-six players. The game will also have Wii-mote specific controls as well, apparently. Hudson's hoping that the game is a smash — to the tune of a million downloads. Yeah, we can see that, no problem.

@MasonL87: Uh, Tetris DS is more than just Tetris with online capability. I count 6 different modes of play, each with some variations. Not to mention online, not to mention 10 player local multiplayer.
I think that's a bit of a leap from Game Boy Tetris of old. It's not like Nintendo just repackaged that for the DS. Then I might agree with you.
I also doubt that a Wiiware version of Tetris is going to be as expensive as Tetris DS was, so it might be an alternative for those who 1.) don't have a DS or 2.) haven't picked up Tetris DS (the latter being partially inexusable).
@Draconis: The prospect excites me, and will potentially overload my equally-Tetris-obsessed girlfriend's brain.

I always love me some tetris. Still one of my favorite games of all time, and still one of the most played games on my DS.
I will go buy them, sad I am.

@eastx: Yeah, for $5 I'm there for definite. $10? maybe.
@fruitsofherwomb: 'why? this game has been ported to every system known to man'
No, in fact it HASN'T. the Wii port is missing! but now it won't be. that's why.
If that's really co-op mode it looks shiny. I imagine it's local, though. (It would sort of suck online without voice chat support of the 'NO DON'T PUT THAT THERE YOU IDIOT' variety...)

Collaborative Tetris?
Sometimes I wonder why I just don't give Nintendo direct access to my bank account.

@Nullzero: The Tetrisconcept Wiki has everything you would want to know about T-Spins, among other things.

Oh man... someone teach me how to t-spin. I really can't get the hang of it... it seems like I have to destroy any kind of smooth tetris build-up to get t-spin setup going.

@MarquisMark: That form of Tetris co-op play has actually been around for some time in another Tetris game, where it was called Doubles Mode.

Looks like it would take some good timing and teamwork on both sides, especially when the game speeds up.

If they release it for cheap, I'll pick it up. Otherwise, I'm happy with Tetris DS and Tetris World for the Cube (which, sadly, lacks online but offers various other crazy modes). Plus, my family back home finally got a Wii, so I might be able to do some long distance Tetris-ing with my father.
However, Hudson needs to put this project on hold and give me Xexyz on the VC ASAP! I've been waiting patiently...

@MasonL87: THe fact that you think owning a DS game is the same as owning a Wii game depresses me. I mean, sure, one version is playable on a TV screen of varying sizes and includes same-console multiplayer, while the other version is portable, has a tiny screen, and totally different multiplayer, but... Damn, you gave me cancer. :(

If they include at least two of the three original music tracks from Gameboy, then we'll see if we can't talk out a deal.

You've bought and played Tetris before, now prepare to buy it ALL OVER AGAIN, but this time it has online (which has been done before in Tetris DS) and is on Wii (can't imagine how that would really change the formula).
In a few years, when Nintendo's next handheld is out with whatever features of awesome gamingness it offers, they'll put tetris on it and we'll buy it again.
Cause we're stupid.

@Gomerboy: WiiWare doesn't offer playable demos, only trailers. If you can't tell how a Tetris game is going to play from a video, maybe it is for the best you skip over it...

@Rebelphoenix83:
He does, assuming the game is actually called Tetris. Not for the original games, but for any new games using the "Tetris" name(aka not clones) Pajitnov gets a cut through Tetris Company LLC and has since the early 90's. So unless they call this 'Falling Blocks' or something(really bad PR move), he'll get royalties for the use of the name.

Huh. I've certainly played some crappy versions of Tetris (see: Tetris Worlds), so I hope there's a great demo mode I can play before I possibly buy.
And for the love, please keep the prices of these things down! People will buy this on a whim at $5, but even I would think twice at spending $10 for another Tetris game.

@jive238:
Why would I pay for tetris when I can play any one of the many clones online, the game gets very boring very quick, hell if puzzle quest didn't have some semblance of a story I wouldn't have played it for nearly as long as I did.

It sounds nice in theory, but how many versions of Tetris are missing Korobeiniki? A lot, and something tells me this one will fail to deliver as well.
Until someone wises up and makes Korobeiniki standard, I'll stick with my original GameBoy and copy of Tetris.

I could see a million downloads if they just charge $5, but since Nintendo wants $10 for Dr. Mario, I'm not optimistic.
BTW I'm going to write a book about Tetris some day. :)

Is that a Mii face up there in the middle of the screen? Is that the other player's Mii face?
In this world where people can make Mii faces that look like vaginas or testicles, there's no way I'm going to let my kids play Tetris ever again!
And I don't even have kids!

Hmmm.. a Tetris game. If Tetris was a Russian whore, her sphincter would seize to contract like an old worn out elastic band drooped open to the circumferences of beach cruiser-sized bicycle wheel. This is the effect of being used for all you're worth. That said, it will probably sell two million. Who doesn't enjoy hitting side on a loose anus? <3

Is that screenshot to the left co-op Tetris?
I mean, I pretty much only play Tetris DS these days, and that has enough play modes to satisfy one's urge to form lines with interlocking blocks.
But when did I miss the advent of co-op Tetris?
