id Has Plans For iPhone Gaming
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 1:40 PM on March 8, 2008
In a comment filed to Slashdot, id co-founder John Carmack says that his company is looking at iPhone development. Sega's on board, as are EA and Gameloft, and it appears we may be seeing an accelerometer controlled Orcs & Elves if Carmack has his way. Although Carmack apparently didn't have nice things to say about iPod dev tools, pissing of Steve Jobs, he was up on iTunes distribution and its 70% royalty rate.
"The ability to distribute larger applications than the over-the-air limits and effectively market your title with more than a dozen character deck name, combined with the reasonable income split make this look like a very interesting market," he says. We're sure John can knock up a solid Doom 3 engine over the weekend if need be.

@madhotch: You can't use the button in your game. Pushing the button will quit the game.
The iPhone would be perfect for games like Super Monkey Ball (which use the accelermoeter for control) or adventures like Phoenix Wright (which I already pretty much play with my thumb). Obviously, stuff like Doom isn't too viable on the iPhone.
@boxofthegods: Interestingly, smudging isn't much of an issue. The iPhone's screen is glass which virtually can't be scratched, so I keep it in my pocket without any kind of cover, which wipes smudges away. Also, since it's pretty much impossible to scratch the screen, I just wipe it on my shirt if there's any visible smudges; but because the screen is so bright, any smudges which might be there are rarely visible at all.
@Protector one: Actually, pissing aside, I do wonder what Carmack said about Apple's dev tools. I think id used to use NeXT boxes for development; Xcode is basically an advanced version of the NeXT dev tools. I wonder what Carmack didn't like about them...
Ah, after googling, it seems he didn't object to the tools, but to Apple's support of gaming in general.

I'm wondering just how much they'll be charging for these games. I'm completely stoked by Spore, I'm really looking forward to having a play with that on my touch, but what's the costing going to be. I can quite happily drop 5 quid on a mobile game, without even thinking about it, sometimes they're good, sometimes not :-) But can i see myself dropping console prices on these? I think not. I don't even get a plastic box and 3 pages of health warnings for my money!
So the developer sets the price eh? EA take note, REASONABLE prices please.

@Crosswayboy: Those are very, very impressive. Normally I'd be a bit more careful when it comes to promotional material, but there are even homebrew PSX-emulators for the iPhone, so I believe the potential is there.
@celery: You have to remember, the iPhone install-base is different from the usual DS/PSP-crowd, so it's also a way to maximise your market. Also, the iPhone's install base is continuously growing and it is a stable platform (at least compared to the usual mobile phone game market with dozens of variants of the same game for different phones), so it makes sense to capitalise on it.
There's also the point that distribution through Apple's infrastructure should really ease the developer's efforts, as people are already accustomed to buying most of their content for their iProducts from the iTunes Store. It all comes together quite nicely, in the end.
All that's left is for me to actually buy an iPhone, but I think I'll wait until they release a 3G-model.

Firstly I won't get an Ipod Touch or Iphone until they release a much bigger hard drive, while I like my Ipod Classic 80GB. God I hate Itunes, such a poor music program which uses more resources than any other music player I've used.
I also hate the fact that you can't put music onto your Ipod on different computer, instead Itunes wipes your Ipod of music, games etc and transfers the songs to the compuuter your currently connected to your Ipod.

It's interesting that so many game developers are announcing iPhone projects--compared to other handhelds (DS and PSP), the iPhone install base is pretty small. And there's no guarantees that an iPhone owner is interested in games at all, though granted in general cell phone games do brisk business. Of course, according to Fox, some people buy DS's just to seduce little girls over Pictochat while driving down the freeway, so who knows?

Just because a device can't play Doom (or should I say play it well) doesn't mean it sucks as a gaming device. The wii can't do Assassin's Creed, but it can do 3D platformers, some of which are better than Assassin's Creed. The PC can't do Zack and Wiki, but it can do adventure games, some of which are better than Zack and Wiki. What defines the strength of a gaming platform isn't what games can be ported to it, but rather the quality and variety of games it can play.
And by the way, of all the major gaming genre's out there, there is only one that I can't see working on the iphone, and it's not the FPS.

@NameYourCharacter: I'm either gonna rule that as extreme sarcasm or a symptom of playing too much Microsoft Flight Simulator.
Sure there's a lot of potential (like labyrinth, which is awesome) but not not all genres would be able to be ported over. FPS games I don't see happening, too much control input is required. RPGs, puzzle games, rhythm games and sidescrollers with brand new control schemes would be sweet.

@NameYourCharacter: Because 'they' specifically said all console-style genres are coming to the iPhone. Smartass. =P
Think RTS, Sim games, etc.
Perhaps you would give it a chance and see how games are implemented before typing your baseless wise-ass remark? =)

Walk and strafe with one finger.
Move camera with two fingers.
Fire primary weapon with three fingers.
Change weapon by sliding four fingers to the left or right.
Fire secondary weapon with five fingers.
Reload by sliding six fingers across the screen.
Shake violently to use doors and objects.
Flip it around in a 360-degree motion to turn the torch on.
Look, haters, it's easy, simple and intuitive.

@Custom Reality:
Couldn't agree with you any more.
Well anyway, now i'm curious as to what apple is going to do with there next phone or iPod iterations.
Are we going to see some sort of iPod Gaming platform, a PSP, DS competitor?
Honestly, seeing how apple is known for there who-ha Products. Which are by-the-way meticulously overpriced (for a good reason). I wouldn't see many people getting their "console". But alike all iPods, it may reach pretty much every single person on the planet, so they may reach some interesting numbers.
But it still bothers me to no end... An iPod Console, really does sound pretty damn interesting, But apple is definitely going to have to come-up with some alternative interfaces. Cause i cant imagine playing Doom with a touch screen and 1 button. (Actually i probably could but it just doesn't appeal to me).
Also adding to the fact they like to have their products State-of-the-art, Which i applaud them for.
I may be wrong, seeing how the PSP2 may look like its going to kill, but if it wants to kill, in my opinion its going to need a touchscreen. And a new control scheme, that beats the crap out of the Current PSP model. (still hopes for a slider)

@Rockwallaby:
A multi-touch screen is ok, but I think I would appreacite the iPhone more if it came with a stylus or something, my ds is smudged bad right now and I don't use my fingers on the screen, plus my fingers are numbers of times bigger than a stylus and would obscure the screen badly. Also I think the accloromter is a bit overhyped, in that you know have to move the thing to use it, imagine playing the ps3 with the screen attached to the controller, I'd like my viewing angle not changed so much because I have to turn the iPhone over or around.

I see this as a welcome addition to gaming. For me it came at the perfect time, Im working on being an indie developer and this would be a perfect entrance into the field. Of course my ultimate goal is a have a PSN title for either PS3 or PSP, but right now those are out of reach for me.
I just hope Sony sees this as a good example and hurries the hell up with making a PS phone or better yet starts the video download service. Because right now Apple has the potential of kicking Sony's (and MS's) ass in the video/music/games download service. That would be a huge shame, because although Im a big Apple fan, Im an even bigger Playstation fan.

Que the haters who haven't even touched an iPhone.
Ah, right on time!
Remember kids, it's always cool to hate on things when:
1. It's mainstream
2. You're online and I can't punch you in the face
3. You can't afford it
4. You don't understand it
5. Isn't the company of whose wang you're making love to at the moment.
I, for one, welcome full-fledged games anywhere they can manage them. Games on my iPhone is a pretty sweet proposition, for when I'm on the go and don't feel like lugging around a handheld and it's games, and all I have on me is my smartphone.
I hope this leads to some really cool titles being brought to the iPhone.

I'm really not going for a Wii-DS control scheme with one button. Touch screens are terrible for gaming...and waggle has long outstayed it's welcome.
