Korg's Nintendo DS Synth In Action
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 8:40 AM on March 15, 2008
We posted about Korg's DS-10 software the other day, the music app that makes your Nintendo DS a pretty capable sequencer and synthesiser. What we neglected to do was include helpful video of the software in action. Looks perfect for those of us lacking in rhythm and pitch detection. Musically incapable, unite!

FWIW, not sure if anyone reads new posts in old articles, but I found this link: [createdigitalmusic.com]
in which one of the devs says it will be an international release. They are working onlocalized versions of KORG DS-10.

Seems like a totally sweet DS version of the Korg Kaossilator. I would buy it in a heartbeat.

@somarix: The first synth that you coded had patchable oscillators, resonant filters, mixing controls with several effects, and a built-in sequencer, in 'a few hours'? If that's true I'm impressed. I'd be even more impressed if it runs on a 66 MHz ARM-9.
This is a toy, but it looks like it's a pretty awesome toy. I'm wondering how close they are coming to the absolute CPU limits i.e. would it be possible to make a DS-20 later with additional voices, or not...

@YuSuzuki: Well to me this seems perfect for musicians. What if you get inspired on the bus/train and just want to give it a try and not have to wait till you get back to your own equipment?
Like that Colors drawing for the DS thing, it's perfect if I feel the need to draw while I'm out.

I absolutely want this. I have a friend going to Japan this summer, so I may be able to get it. In the meantime I'll go play with Reason and Rebirth on my PC!

I would totally pay money for that. Seems like a good way for amateur designers to make game music?? And just plain cool. Now team it up with someone who's got electro plankton, some iPhone users with musical apps, and you'll have a portable synth team..

lol yeah as a musician i dont really see any benefit in this program, unless you dont know how to mix tracks i guess this can somewhat show you extremely simplified mixing tools, so you can get an understanding of how to use them.

God awful. What was that musician thinking. Heck, even I have made better tunes and demos of synths; and coded much better things. Only my first-ever synth (that I coded) had such over-simple waves, controls and pattern-input. Was coded for a few hours in VB XD.

not bad. Can we get some Korg-05RW sounds for that? I miss that module. wish I never sold it. But in the long run, it's the Roland Fantom for me. I'd sell your mom to get that. It'd go really nicely with my Xp-50.

That was cute seeing the section where he draws in the patch panel.
Bring on the Mini Moog emu plug-in, and we'll have a new DS revolution.

@krunkjuice: Quality from the headphone jack is probably adequate for the casual user, but definitely not for the professional musician. In any case, this is obviously not meant for professional use anyway. If anything, it looks useful for testing out synth patches on the go, when you can't lug around a full synth or a laptop with software and a midi controller.

@zoesch:
I'm not a professional musician with roomfulls of bank-breaking gear, so sadly I recognize about 4 units... but the ability to virtually patch cables jumped out at me which is where I made that connection.
But Rebirth is based on all Roland synths, isn't it?

@Mit: It's not complicated...you plug the DS into your line in jack and set whatever program your using to record to pull from the line in. Easy Peasy....This is looking great. I just had my Alesis SR-16 destroyed in a basement flood and this would be a cheap way to replace it.

Theres a homebrew out there called Nitro Tracker I do believe and it does simplistic mixing/synth not as nice as this, but still its out there for 100% free!

I REALLY REALLY hope to see a release outside of Japan, as I don't want to have to import this with the American dollar being as weak as clock radio speakers. I will import it tho if I have to. It looks awesome. Wish there was some sort of MIDI support/device ... but it's all good.

@Fyren: DS cartridges aren't SD cards if that's what you're getting at O.o
And so far, there doesn't appear to be any way to export what you create on this aside from using the audio-output and recording software on a computer.
Wish I knew how to use all of that. I was pretty interested in it at first, but I'm fairly confident I wouldn't know how to use it well enough for it to be enjoyable rather than frustrating.

I can't read the letters, but are they in english? It's hard enough as it is, if it were in Japanese I wouldn't even bother trying to learn how to use it.

I use Reason and Ableton Live together, so I'm fairly familiar with software synths. I think with this little gem, it's going to come down to whether you can make your own patches for the synth. If so, I'd say it's a legit instrument; because that would mean you would have the capability of creating your own unique sounding synths, instead of being leashed to a few factory pre sets. Not enough info and specs to tell.

Crap, I just send a "tip" about this. I didn't realize it was posted already.
Anyway, the man demonstrating the software is Cavia's Nobuyoshi Sano (aka Sanodg). You may be familiar with his works on the Tekken and RR series among other Namco games before heading off to Cavia. Though he still does work for Namco as well.

@Highlander Wolf: @fuchikoma: It's actually more like Rebirth in your pocket than reason, the analog synth is definitely modeled after the MS-10/MS-20 and the scribble gesture interface is definitely straight out of the KAOSS pad like SPni said.
I don't know how good this could be as a scratch pad but it looks OK for non musicians to get an idea of the work involved.

OMG, that's like Reason in your pocket! I'm used to seeing heavily technical music editors on handhelds, but never official like this! And that stylus scribble synth programmer looks tight.
But sadly I still won't get it because I only ever clown around a bit and make something half-listenable in suites like that. I'd still probably have to take two college level courses to begin to be productive in something like that. :/
