LEGO Indiana Jones Demo Shipping with New Indy DVDs
Posted by Brian Crecente at 11:49 AM on March 5, 2008
All three special editions DVDs of the Indiana Jones trilogy will be shipping with both a demo and trailer for the upcoming LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures game, Ars Technica reports.
Fantastic, now I have two excuses to buy Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. I wonder when I can start showing my son the flicks? I'll have to rewatch them to make sure they're not too racy first, I guess.

I have been struggling with the age question myself - I showed my 5-year-old the opening scene from the Lost Ark, keeping a close eye on his reaction. The impaled guide on the way out of the temple freaked him a bit, and he didn't want to watch any more. As much as I would love to watch this with him, I don't think he's ready for it.
I have been watching the 'Young Indiana Jones' series, and would love to have him watch some of these as well, but they have the same type of issues - 95% great, but always a few things that are too mature for a younger child. As far a being 'racy', Lucas has a 10-year-olds understanding of male-female relationships, so that's usually not too much of an issue with his stuff for older kids.
You definitely need to be careful - it is hard to predict what images and situations will stick in a child's head. Think back you when you were a kid and what things that seem silly now haunted you then...

You guys are really messed up about the definition of 'racy' if you're comparing to movies like Jurassic Park and The Matrix. xD
As far as actually being racy (or risqué if you prefer), there's a minor amount of innuendo and a few cases of a long kiss, but nothing graphic or prolonged.
Violence is your average fistfights of the day. It's done tastefully, not gratuitously, so I think most responsible kids over the age of 7 could take it.
In each of the movies though there is at least one case of "disturbing images" as has been mentioned; melting faces/angel of death in Raiders, ripping a beating heart out of someone's chest/general crazy voodoo guy in Temple, and hyper-aging/decapitation in Crusade.
Everybody's kid is different so I can't put a good thumb on age, but those are the key points I can think of that might mess with a little kid's head (also the points I remember my parents saying "don't watch" over when I first saw them).

I watched Star Wars (originals) at about 5-7, Jurassic Park at the same time, and the Indy films shortly after. They're all on a level of 'racy-ness', I feel. By about 12 I think I watched the Matrix and thought myself very mature.

I bent last time when they re-released the Star Wars trilogy with the theatrical "untouched" version, but adding an Indy game demo to a trilogy I already have isn't going to cut it for me. Unless they recreate THE ENTIRE MOVIE in lego, I'm not going to bite.
I'd rather use that money to get the Indy 12". It's purty.

I started watching these movies when I was seven in '88 I believe. Then I rewatched them years later and picked up on tons of stuff that I totally didnt remember in the original. Great movies, I think a good age to watch them would be seven.

@Sollus: just sell all your dvds. thats what i did. i had like a 200+ dvd collection and i just traded them into GameStop/Moviestop and got like close to 400 dollars for them. Then i got me a PS3 and now im starting my Blu Ray collection. Although i still kept all my animated shit on DVD and my james bond boxset, indy box set, 3 special edition LOTRs and Death Proof and Planet Terror. So if these Indys arnt coming on Blu Ray then i dont know why they are even releasing them

Hey Brian I dont think you should feel that they are to racy for your son. They are classic films, hell I watched them when I was a kid. Plan to show my kids one day as well. Just dont put to much focus on the crazy parts, but more on the whole fun of the movie experience and it's fun. :)

I remember taking my little sister to see the first movie (she was 9 at the time), and she loved it. Nothing I would call inappropriate (certainly not of a sexual nature). She has the set already (her favorite being the 3rd one), so I doubt if she'd want a new set. I, on the other hand...

Just my opinion, but Last Crusade was an abomination, just like Return of the Jedi. The first movie was a classic for all time, and it's been steadily downhill from there. Last Crusade was like a damn Road Runner cartoon.
That being said, if the price is right the Lego game will probably be fairly fun.

My family's first VHS cassette was Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade because it came with our first VCR, purchased in 1990. I would have been around 5 years old at the time. I have fond memories of that movie -- I used to watch it on Sick Days in kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade. Sure, there was a lot of stuff I didn't understand at the time (like, I thought Hitler was just a big Nazi general, not the leader of the Nazis, and I thought the woman was screaming "ALLAH!", not "ALLIES!", when she sees Indy and his dad in the secret control room), but the movie was fine. The one part I never liked as a kid (and still dislike to this day) is when the villain turns into the Cryptkeeper because of "he chose ... poorly." I used to shut my eyes and, because I watched the movie so many times, open them based on sound clues.
I think children today would only be so lucky if their first Blu-Ray DVD was an Indiana Jones movie. It's really too bad I can't say "first DVD" since the format's been out for so long it would be weird for a family to be getting their first DVD player today. Still, if it's a question of appropriateness for kids, I think the Indiana Jones movies are fine.
Then again, this is coming from a guy who got Terminator 2: Judgment Day for his 8th birthday, so ...

I remember the beginning of the first movie scaring me when I was a kid, I would have been 6. Also the scene where they guy gets Chopped up in the airplane propeller was gruesome.
Wait a while before showing the movie to him. I just let my 6 year old watch the first Star Wars movie (Episode IV). It'll be awhile before Indiana Jones.

As was hinted above, Temple of Doom is the reason that PG-13 was invented. The heart scenes are pretty intense.
The first one is pretty tame except for the ending - I'm not going to show it to my son until he's at least 7-8.
The third one I only watched once; it bored me when it was released (I was probably 17-18) and I've never plucked it out of the last DVD boxset to rewatch.

I remember seeing Star Wars when I was 3 in the drive in and my brother thought I might find Vader scary. I loved Vader but Chewbacca scared the beejeezus out of me.
Oh yeah, I saw Raiders at 6, Temple of Doom at 10, and Last Crusade at 14, and I wasn't particularly freaked out by any of them.

@Sloopydrew: I'm gonna guess, they digitally edited the movies to further nerf them for younger viewers, ala Spielberg's maiming of ET? I just hope that the results aren't similar to that episode of South Park...;)
Yeah, but in general as somebody who's worked selling DVDs in the past (not currently, got a "real" job hehe) this is not only common but I agree somewhat despicable, to rerelease movies like this in DVD...at least wait and do it on a "next-Gen" format so you can have a better excuse to ream us! You don't get to do it over and over again on one format, thats just excess greed at its worst.
I'd also agree that 8-10 is the minimum age for the Indy movies, and honestly I'd put Temple of Doom at least in the 12+ range, as hard as it is to just watch 1, 3 and 4 and wait years for 2 it may be best, as IMO nothing in the other movies (of course I'm just speculating on 4) is as frightening as the stuff in the last half of 2. It still freaks me out a bit, not because I'm still scared of it but because I remember how much it freaked me out when I saw it at 8 years old!

About the age, you need to be careful. If your kid is the right age, Indy will be an adventure he will treasure for years to come, too young and he will be scared and not want to watch again until the magic of it will not register any more. I would say when the movie came-out 9-10 would be a lower limit, but kids these days are exposed to more so you may be able to get away with 7-8. Do keep in mind though that Raiders was originally going to be rated R. They obscured some of the exploding faces with superimposed fire and were able to get a PG rating. Of course back then there was no PG-13 rating.
But just recall the opening sequence of Raiders. There are two impaled bodies, one fellow with arrows in the back, and lots of tarantulas just in the first seven minutes or so. I am going to wait until my son is at least 7, I think I was 10. Just play the video games and the new Lego sets with him for now.

Hmmm...So your kid is already a hardcore gamer.
And you're worried about him being offended by a PG-13 movie?
And can anybody remember this? Back during the Kotaku v. Gizmodo Halo 3 matches I remember watching the Justing TV thing. Didn't Crecente say Tristan said "Kick their fucking asses."? Or did I just imagine that whole video?

Questionable content:
Raiders:
Ghosts, exploding faces, melting faces, sucked in faces, suggestive kissing scene ("where does it hurt?"), uncomfortable teacher/student relationships
Temple:
Heart grabbing, breast grabbing, child abuse, gross dinner scene, "Anything Goes"
Last Crusade:
Disintegrating person, beheading, gunshot wound, Hitler cameo, additional cults
All that and it should still be okay. It's all lighthearted really.

Oh, and Crecente... I saw the first one at age 9 in the theater. Star Wars, I was 6 and every kid I knew saw that too, and it's really not much different on the "violence / racy" scale, I wouldn't say.
Maybe those were different times, but PG used to mean it was generally fine as long as the parent was there to provide context if needed. Temple of Doom was the first PG-13 movie... though I've never really been able to figure out why. Indy just punches Nazis and evil demigod worshipers... and those guys are supposed to get punched.

@crecente: Too racy!? I saw fucking Alien when I was two. Two! And I'm totally fine. Granted, I did live the next 6 years of my life in constant fear that an alien was going to pop out of my stomach because I was too little to understand you needed to have one put in you in order for one to come out, but c'mon. Actually, that probably wasn't my parents' best decision.

I saw Raiders at the theater when I was 9. Temple of Doom at 12. They both scared the crap out of me. Not "racy" but if they were released today, the gore level of both movies would guarantee them an R rating. Still, I wouldn't deprive your son the greatest adventure movies of all time just over a few melting faces and hearts ripped from chests. But I would wait until he's at least 8 years old to show him this stuff as it does get pretty graphic.

Screw the system. What proof? I want something more official than AT claiming that two companies (neither of which seems to have anything listed on their websites about this) have both "announced" an upcoming Indiana Jones SE box set. Not because I don't believe them, mind you, but because I want to find out what _besides_ the game demo will be different with this version over the one I've already got sitting on my shelf. If it's just the demo, I'll probably pass (I've got a dollar that says it won't be a PC demo, which means it'll be useless for me).
