Lost Planet Colonies Is Rehash With Bonus Material
Posted by Flynn De Marco at 3:00 AM on March 14, 2008
Now the truth can be told about Lost Planet: Colonies. The title has been shrouded in mystery for a while causing wild speculation as to what it could be. Yesterday, Famitsu let some of the details fly on the Japanese version and now we have clearance to give you the details for the US version.
As you probably already know, Lost Planet: Colonies is going to be a "Platinum Hits" version of the original game but with tons of added content. For the redux of an old game being sold at a discount price ($US 29.95) they have really loaded it down with new features. There are three new single player modes, six new online multiplayer modes (including one where a random player gets chosen to play one of the big bugs while the other players try to take him down), four new multiplayer maps, four new player characters including two females and two robots, eight new weapons, new environments, cross platform play (PC and 360) and a the new ability to switch from first person view to an RE4 style over-the-shoulder view. Whew!
To read the details on all the fancy new features of Lost Planet: Colonies which hits May 28, make the jump!
New modes for single player campaign:
Score Attack - Each enemy and destructible object has points assigned to them, with the player being awarded different points depending on how they defeat the enemy.
Trial Battle Mode - Take on each of the game's Bosses, one after another
Off Limit Mode - Go wild with over-the-top, super-charged weapons with unlimited ammunition and increased speed of movement
New online modes
Akrid Hunter - Get the chance to finally play as an Akrid as your opponents attempt to take you down
VS Annihilator - Each team attempts to destroy its opponent's VS while defending its own
CounterGrab - The team with the longest data post activation time wins
Point Snatcher - Take down opponents and collect the most thermal energy points
Akrid Egg Battle - Steal Akrid eggs from the opponent's team and bring them safely back to your own base
Egg Bandit - steal your opponents' Akrid egg, with points awarded for longer capture times
Four new multiplayer maps
Crossfire City - the wide streets provide an excellent opportunity for VS battles, while buildings provide great cover for sharp-eyed snipers
Area 921- Two industrial compounds located in a vast desert and linked by an underground pipe
Lost Arena - The central arena is ideal for VS pilots to act as futuristic gladiators, while those on foot can use the surrounding grandstands as their battleground
Assault Space - Set onboard a space ship and its supply vessel, the blackness of space is sure to make for some interesting encounters
New playable characters
Two female and two robot characters are added to the roster of choices for online personas to choose from, bringing the total to 11
New weapons (human)
Hand Gun - weak in power, but very accurate and easy to use
Revolver - The expert's one-shot kill weapon of choice at close quarters
Flame Launcher - Uses thermal energy to lay down a wall of fire
Hand Cannon - A handgun-like rocket launcher that is very effective against VS suits
New weapons (VS)
Pile Bunker - A long spike fires out at immense speed
VS Rifle - VS-dedicated rifle which has the longest range and loses no power regardless of the distance
Rocket Pod - Shoot off a salvo of rockets to cause immense damage to a specific area
Laser Lance - Attack with a sweeping arc of devastation
New Environments
Snowstorms, arctic winds, towering mountains of ice are all stunningly realised, creating a truly immersive and cinematic event of epic proportions.
New perspectives
Switch to first person view or the over-the-shoulder view from Resident Evil™ 4 for even more intense action

Huh. I was never able to beat the final boss. Score Attack sounds fun enough to warrant another try. ^_^
And I'm going to fucking get that Worm Hunter achievement this time around.

Awesome! I missed out on the game originally due to time and money constraints even though I loved the demo, this'll be a perfect excuse to pick it up.

@TalKeaton: Game Design Major: I liked the single player and barely played the multiplayer. There are times when it gets very frustrating, but it's still a lot of fun. I won't be buying it a second time though. If you didn't pick it up the first time it's worth a try.

@Astrofox: An expansion would cost $20 or $30, so it's in the same price range as one.
However, without any added single-player content, I'm not picking this up. It's not worth trying to deal with the shitty PC controls for multiplayer.

Man, this game had some of the best multiplayer maps I've ever seen, and the grappling hook added a certain Spider-Man feel to the game. I don't play many online shooters, but I got more into Lost Planet than I have most of the shooters I've played on the 360. The only thing that stunk about it was a lack of muliplayer game modes (the original only shipped with 4.) I might be picking this up to relive the awesome multiplayer, but that'll mean I've spent $100 on Lost Planet, which is kind of a lot. Too bad there's not some kind of trade-in program or something.

I was going to buy the PS3 version but this is kind of a slap in the face so I will probably re-think that.

So instead of getting the EGM rumored platinum hits version of Dead Rising that was going to include online co-op, they decide we would rather have this abomination. I really hope that they at least announce Dead Rising 2 before the year is over.

So... this is also for PS3? I thought the Colonies version was for 360 only. I'm a PS3 only owner so I'm interested if it's coming to both. The other reason I wonder is that I was thinking of picking up LP for PS3, but that would be pointless if Colonies comes to PS3 in 8 weeks.

Wow, I'll probably buy it now.
I played the original for a while (didn't buy it though), and it was fun if not a little broken at places. The single player was dull, but nothing was particularly wrong with it.
The multiplayer was actually a lot of fun, just very broken. Spawncamping was too easy, the grappling hook was a great gameplay addition but just didn't have the coolness that it could have (like shooting while hanging).
If the multi is fixed, it's worth a pick up just for that.

I've never even played LP, but the 'Akrid Hunter' mode sounds like a brilliant addition. Looks like it'll be well worth the $30 for anyone who hasn't already bought the game, but that's simply the nature of the Platinum Hits beast. I don't think it's right to fault Capcom or say they're screwing their customers here - on the PS3 or otherwise. I suppose all of the people reacting negatively to this also despise 'Directors Cut' versions of DVDs with fancy new bonus features added.
What about every other 'Platinum Hits' game? Don't you think the late-adopters who pay $60 for a game feel swindled when they see the exact same game for $30 a week later? They're adding tons of content while the price drops - that sounds like a positive step to me.
I believe a company deserves some kudos for making this kind of commitment to improving their game and adding new features instead of just slapping 'Platinum Hits' on the box art and sending it to the shelves.

I'd hit it again, Lost Planet was a favorite of mine.
I wouldn't be surprised if they allowed importing of original LP saves or something though.

After playing MGS3's online mode, I was really jonesing for some Japanese-style multiplayer, but for some reason Lost Planet never did it for me (maybe cause I started playing it several months after release?). Should I pick this up?

Couldn't most of this stuff have been done through DLC or an expansion?
Will people buy the game again for different modes while losing their saves etc?

Wow, nice for a rehash.
I never owned the original, but this sounds tempting.
Might have to give this a whirl sometime when I'm tired of my other games.
If nothing else, the ability to whoop 360 owners on PC is worth it alone. My MX Revolution mouse will run circles around a controller.
Quick, grab the extinguisher before the flaming starts!

What about people who paid full price for the original Lost Planet?
It reads they're not compatible, so I'm guessing a new retail purchase is mandatory - which kinda stinks, you'd think making these updates downloadable wouldn't be that big a deal.

I must say this is a very assholey decision from Capcom. So short after the PS3 release of Lost Planet, they unveil a collector's edition. If I bought that game, I would've felt pretty screwed.

I'm glad I didn't buy it a few weeks ago when it was less the $20.
This mode sounds like fun:
"Off Limit Mode - Go wild with over-the-top, super-charged weapons with unlimited ammunition and increased speed of movement"
I just hope I don't have to finish the game to unlock it...

Okay, so this appears to be the definitive version of the game, but making it incompatible with the already released versions? I enjoyed the game, but I don't think I'll be rushing out to buy this new version. I hope they didn't tie up any resources at Capcom that could have been working on a new, fully fleshed out game. Such a strange way to handle what essentially could have been a downloadable add-on pack.
