Man Hacks Bejeweled, Wins Wife
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 4:00 PM on March 6, 2008
p3ng has a special lady in his life. So special that, in January, the time had come to propose. Guy didn't want to do the standard dropping-to-one-knee thing, though, so he got a little clever: he hacked up a DS copy of Bejeweled and turned it into a cute little digital wedding proposal. Who can say no to that kind of effort? Not her, that's for sure.
A Nerdy Proposal Story (I'm Engaged!) [p3ng, thanks Sally!]

if he was really good (and really loved her) he would've hacked into our nuclear codes and shot off some nukes that spelled out "will you marry me" but I guess that's good enough!!!!

@Covert_Knight: Agreed. Anybody who thinks this is lame must be single and lonely.
Girls appreciate creativity. And its a sweet way to pop the question.

Everyone can laugh about it (I giggled), but c'mon... you gotta admit, it's pretty creative.
The guy probably removed her picture because now she feels embarrassed that she is plastered on the web as the girl whose husband proposed to her through a DS.

Dammit! Just last night I figured out an amazing, unique way to propose and it's very close to what this guy did.
Oh well, I don't even have a girlfriend right now so I'm years away from needing a good proposal technique. I'm sure I'll be able to whip up a quick virtual environment by then on my PS5 in TotallyHugePlanet and arrange stars to spell out a message.
...dammit....Futurama did that already too....

To me the very act of proposal is self defeating, and while proposals like this are on the extreme high end of clever, they are also representative of how much control the woman will feel she has over the man given his so deeply involved attempt to get her to accept him.
Why can't people treat "relationships" more like, well, gaming? This guy should have understood more than most that "love" is making a shot to the knees of a target 120 kilometers away using an Aratech sniper rifle with a tri-light scope... Love is knowing your target, putting them in your targeting reticule, and together, achieving a singular purpose against statistically long odds. When you sell your soul to someone, that isn't love. That's slavery with a cost of entry.
That being said, this at least sets a nice precedent for the inevitable failure of the marriage. In 10 years when we have fully computer controlled cars all standard equipped with front window displays he can hack her car to drive off a cliff and then display a lovely message, perhaps along the lines of "This marriage has encountered a critical error".
But then what do I know. The only person I know who actually dates women has a historically "questionable" taste. I can't say that him dealing with women whose only sense of culture is watching every movie that comes out for free at the theater she works and then forcing him to watch them all too until he finds one they both like so she can feel, well, "cultured hasn't destroyed my image of women. Maybe I'm the pathetic one. Maybe everything I say is meaningless. Maybe I should stop talking about things I don't understand and not demean stuff that means so much to others...
Maybe, but anyone who disagrees that him shooting her legs out with a sniper rifle as a form of proposal would NOT be infinitely cooler is an idiot. My way or not, he'll still be the one getting a CROTCH SHOT tonight. HIYOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Wait, I don't mean either way. Why did I say that? I mean it's still cool that he did that.
Personally, I would want to propose with a more active, adrenaline pumping method, like driving a ferrari in the middle of a gunfight across a flooded ship being sucked into a dark gaping portal in the sky.

It'd be funny if she sucked at Bejeweled and took forever to reach the required score.
Well.. Maybe it wouldn't be funny, but perhaps awkward if he were to stare at her play all evening or take it from her and reach the score himself.
EITHER WAY, cool.

@Covert_Knight: This person here said it in the clearest terms for everyone. Anyone who disagrees is a moron.
It's as if people here are self-haters in regards to their interests. As long as both parties (the man and woman) appreciate what's being done, then that's all that matters.

(Pre-emptive strike post) I'm waiting for all the dicks to come in and say "ZOMFG THATS SO STUPID etc etc" As if they were anywhere near more clever or better than them. They're getting married and they're happy, so we should not try to rain on their parade, because when you find someone who makes you happy, you would hope that others would have the respect and decency not to harass you two either. This happens in every single "I proposed to my wife through video games" topic ever created, so I just felt like I had to say it before the pattern triggers again.
