Mass Effect PC DLC May Be Different
Posted by Mark Wilson at 5:20 AM on March 18, 2008
While we've only seen one piece of Mass Effect DLC for the 360, Bioware assures us that new planets, races and missions are still on the way in future expansions. So most of us would expect PC players to one day get all the same stuff. But according to Bioware's Matt Atwood, such is not necessarily the case.
We're asked if we're going to do Bring Down the Sky for PC, and it's a consideration. We're looking in to exactly what we want to do; maybe we'll do something different, because the PC offers some different potentials. Is that a hint at a complete expansion? We'd usually think so, if Bioware weren't trying to crank out three Mass Effects in a single product cycle.

Man, I'll be peeved if there's a PC expansion that the 360 doesn't get. Not because I'm a 360 zealot, or even because it'd mean forking out cash to play it on the PC. The simple fact is I couldn't very well pluck my characters out of my 360 save and drop them onto the PC to play the expansion, now, could I? Mass Effect is the kind of game where the characters grow with you, and in the end you are the sum of your choices throughout the game. Sure, I could probably go and play through anew on the PC and pump the same number of points into Charm and Intimidate, but it wouldn't be the same...

Confirmed: they test on consoles, if it works, it gets a pc version, if it doesn't, they try again...

I'm just looking forward to playing the main game, although it's a tragedy that Bioware sold out to EA. I really am loathe to give that company a single penny of my cash.

Well, you can't claim the move to PC was shocking nor unexpected. If you look at Bioware's history of "Xbox exclusives" KOTOR and Jade Empire eventually made it on to Pc despite their claims to the contrary. As for the DLC, they'll probably have to make it different by adding DRM or something. The other problem is that crafty crafty modders will be able to implement their own cooler better dlc for free! I wonder if the community would be able to add Lightsabers or something ridiculous like that, even if it's as simple as changing the storming attack animation.

And after an intrepid modder has had their way with the game, my PC will have more than blue alien sideboob.

My PC has framerate, cooling, storage and speed over the 360. So bring on the Mass Effect alien trifecta!

I am going to buy this Day 1.
Also I completely understand sending it out
on the console first, then letting PC players have it
half a year later. Piracy is a concern, and
I don't mind them harvesting console-bucks first,
as long as it eventually comes to the PC.
Some people might argue that they shouldn't
even bother with the PC, but the PC market
is still a real market - I'm one of many -
and to NOT port it is leaving money on the table
because per UNIT, they will make more from a
PC sale because there are no console-licensing fees.
I hope they follow the Oblivion model and
once all the DLC content is out, to sell them
all together as an expansion pack.
I will buy THAT day 1 as well.

@Moonshadow101: Nah - just a friendly chuckle at the 360-PC syndrome.
The PS3 was called out losing to a PC and a GameCube 1.5 for a reason ;)

*Yawn*
Once all five 360 content packs are out, they'll bundle them together and call it an expansion pack.
@Candlejack: You're talking about your fanboyism as if it's something other than a disgusting blemish on your soul. That's not healthy.

Different. As in, better. Oh lawds. I'm glad that my console actually has console exclusives, not console-PC or console-timed exclusives. I'd be royally pissed off if I was still boasting the Xbox brand on my chest. Don't mean to sound like a dick here, but it'd be the same if AAA PS3 exclusives went to the PC, where most people pirate them anyway and I could have just upgraded aforementioned to play the game there.
Of course....that's all subject to point of view. I bet there's an awful lot of people who don't care if a game is 360, PC or at all exclusive.
Anyway, I've got first dibs on the torr.....pre-order.

I would have thought all Xbox 360 DLC should be on the PC. But, however, i do know Microsoft is trying to push Xbox digital distribution, which would explain why it might never see the light of day on PC.

More likely that just means it will be free, because otherwise we'll all just steal it and they know so.
They just need to find an excuse to keep console-users from bitching. Ideally, they'll find some form of sponsorship as the excuse for making it free. Ie: Free only for NVIDIA and ATI users!
