Microsoft CEO Talks, Probably Shouts, About Blu-ray Support
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 10:40 AM on March 8, 2008
When Steve Ballmer isn't profusely sweating to the musical stylings of Gloria Estefan, shouting at the top of his lungs or throwing chairs at things (allegedly!), he's steering the good ship Microsoft. The CEO recently took part in the Microsoft-sponsored internet conference MIX, fielding questions about Google, Yahoo, the Seattle Supersonics and the Sony-backed Blu-ray format.
While Ballmer says that Microsoft has "moved on" from HD-DVD and that "we'll support Blu-ray in ways that make sense" that could mean support stops and starts at drivers for Windows Vista. Of course, it could also mean that Sony senior execs weren't fibbing about a potential Blu-ray capable Xbox 360. Won't some kind time traveler tell us what the plan is?

It will be interesting to see what happens with HD VMD on the very near horizon. Of course Sony will want the 360 to go Blu. It can only help their cause. If HDV VMD was to dominate, the PS3 woud certainly lose a lot of appeal with an inbuilt Blu Ray player that is obsolete. HD DVD might be dead, but with the pricing of HD VMD the battle has just begun.

@mx5:
It doesn't really matter if the consumer hardware is defective on does it. The PS3 SDK isn't 'hard' it's just not the Microsoft VC toolchain most developers learned in college. I actually like the gcc based toolchain better. In terms of components like XBL it might be a little more hassle to setup more middleware, but hey -- it's not like your paid to sit on your ass and drool on the keyboard anyway.
For the record I don't 'hate' the 360 -- like you can hate something that's inert. I just find it offensive a company can get away with selling defective products in the market. Consumers get what they deserve imho.

ahhh the balance is back to the force that is the gaming industry, Nintendo is a household name, Sony is number one (or getting that way) with hardcore gamers, and Microsoft is back to copying and playing catch up (like they do best...see Vista)

I bought an HDDVD drive for the Xbox 360.
I waited until the end of the format war, hoping HDDVD would win.
I lost in the war, just as other HDDVD supporters did.
I expected to hear a real response from Microsoft other than "we're not doing that" or "we'll support it in ways that make sense".
I got sick of waiting, and I bought a PS3.
Thank you Microsoft for taking your sweet ass time. If you get around to making a Blu Ray drive, don't bother calling me. Cocks.
You seriously has a customer that was completely unwilling to touch a PS3. And you fucked it up with your horribly slow response to obvious industry shifts. I know you want to believe that HD downloads are the wave of the future. But that's going to require a change in how people view content. And that change is still a while away.
You movie industries and music makers and game developers all see the content you create as the product you sell. We consumers see the media it's contained upon as the product we buy. We don't see eye to eye yet, and there's work to be done there.
Until then, I'll be buying Blu Ray DVDs and watching them on my shiny new PS3. And I'll be happy knowing that I'm probably extending the time it takes to red ring my 360 by not using it as much.

I'd like to see what kind of licensing fees Microsoft has to pay for Blu Ray support. Kudos to Sony for lining their coffers with their enemies' coin.

A claim which can be easily made by anyone so no offense. My point was that the clip had no mention of that direct comparison, but a general one. Call it a poor attempt at sarcasm now that I read it over. Not that I'm disagreeing that a software company offers better development tools/support than a CE one.
Of course MS thrives on royalties hence Ballmer's chant (and their initial push of HD-DVD since it used HDi and VC1 primarily)

makes sense. contrary to popular belief, business decisions are in fact not driven by fanboy convictions. if there's money to be had it would certainly benefit all parties involved, as well as the end consumer.

@aka Bitter: And that clip tells the truth. X360 developer support is light years ahead of the support Sony offers ... It is no secret most engineers out there love the X360 dev environment and truly hate the PS3.

@TheSonicGamer: I expected it. The fact that Microsoft didn't take HD-DVD serious and didn't promote it with every 360 sold was a big red flag that Microsoft was just creating chaos on the market, so people didn't decide which HD format to choose back then. Microsoft didn't want a single format to win - they needed the chaos while they continued working on their online video stuff. Now since two format battle is in the past, Microsoft will most likely release a Blu-Ray add-on just to cock block Sony again ... the current X360 owners will be able to buy it if they want a Blu-Ray player instead of getting a PS3 thus opening the door to potential buying of PS3 games ...
