MIT Celebrates SSBB Release
Posted by Brian Crecente at 3:00 AM on March 11, 2008
In its grand tradition of "hacking" reality with silly pranks around campus, a bunch of MIT students dressed up the main lobby of MIT with a bunch of Super Smash Bros. Brawl power-ups.
Celebrating the release of a big video game is starting to become a regular theme over there. If you recall, some pranksters dressed up John Harvard's statue to look like Master Chief when Halo 3 was released. The rather fuzzy pictures show a Mario hat, the Smash Bros. box, a Poke ball, a Smash ball, a banana peel. Not shown were some other power-ups hanging from the ceiling.
Ah MIT.

@fallingdove: It's more just having some of your favorite Nintendo characters kick the crap out of each other. The new installment is, I feel, the best of the 3 so far. It's pretty, the controls are very easy (I use the classic controller), and the character moves are fun. With final smashes being fun to pull of once and a while, it's a great game.
Take it for what it is, a fun fighter. I don't quite understand what you mean by "the polish of Mario Galaxy", which was also fun. Like Dauragon C. Mikado said, to each his own.

The MIT campus is used to these types of hijinks. Usually is something is amiss, people will do the rational thing and ask nearby folks, instead of calling the bomb squad.

I agree with the original poster. The retarded nintendo fanboys seem to be doing a hell of a lot of defending of a game that is supposedly of 9.5 quality. I don't remember a game in recent memory (save Halo 3) that got a MUCH higher score than it deserves based of its franchise name alone.
PS. I'm not calling you a retarded fanboy, so please don't take offense. If you WERE one you'd have most likely personally insulted fallingdove right off the bat for not thinking SSBB is the greatest thing ever. So you're cool.

Hey, I am an MIT alumni who also lived on both sides of the river. You obviously met a small percentage of so called "hacks" or fell pretty quickly into the misconception of the university. Although I did live in the dorm of the infamous "dismantly car outside, rebuild it inside in someone's room", that was the only major geekage I was imminient to. I spent my stressful weekend nights on booze and redsox games, like all other Bostonians.
Oh, expanding my mind and being somewhat applicable in this drudged race of time and blah, blah, blah....

@wiriamou:
They came to Boston on their vacation,
They came, they saw, they annoyed me.
They saw it all,
What! Fanueil Hall!
It's best if they just avoid me.
Rented a car to see the sights,
They found the Hub confusing.
Looked for the Swan Boats in Mattapan.
Well, I find that real amusing.
I was here before they came,
I'll be here long after.
Don't want to share, but it seems
clear that I'm gonna have to.
They came to Boston for an education,
Live in the dorms, join a frat,
Jam my bars and subway cars.
Now, what the fuck is that?
Spend year one having fun,
And causing aggravation.
Spending daddy's cash on a toga bash,
When the hell's graduation?
I was here before they came,
I'll be here long after.
Don't want to swear, but it seems
clear that I'm gonna have to.

The controls are definitly lacking using the wii mote and nun chuck. In our 7 hour release day marathon, the operators of the game cube remotes always performed better no matter the character combinations.
I also actually have to say the move sets are very wide and varying and some characters are ridiculously more powerful than others when it comes to their special abilities. Kirby's cooking pot is a joke, and the countering abilities of Darth are near impossible to get thru with no disadvantage...
Was a fun game, but definitly not well balanced, or suited for a WII controller.

@fallingdove: Everyone has a opinion, mine of you is just that, but you have little to back up your other points then "Dur, it sucks with Wiimote". That's why you have four other control methods, go forth and use them.

@Dr.Chocobo: Unbalanced characters - Given the wide variety of the levels(which is good) the characters should have effective moves to match the variety. i.e. Lucas and Ness have very ineffective verticle smashes, so when you are fighting on a level that doesn't promote horizontal smashes, you are at a large disadvantage. We were playing last night, those of us experienced players were dominating in damage dealt but were often beaten by button mashers who were using characters who thrived in these environments.
Controls - 4 different controls if you have the necessary equipment. I have 2 wiimotes, and 1 nunchuck. Using just the wiimote is difficult. The D-pad is too small, some of the move requirements, i.e. to throw B/A/- is uncomfortable and definitely not intuitive for the pace of the game.
Now maybe if I wasn't playing the game on an HD TV, maybe if I didn't also own a PS3 and 360, maybe if I had gamecube controllers or an addition nunchuck these opinions would be different, but I was expecting more.

@Nihon no Purin: I loved the original Smash bros., I played very little Melee because I didn't own a Gamecube, therefore I don't have a gamecube controller to use. I some of the backgrounds do look N64ish, low poly count, blurred textures. The characters look excellent though.@Foxstar Sixtail: Because I have an opinion I am a troll? I would like him to provide some examples by what he means by "N64 graphics on backgrounds", what he means by horrible controls (they provde 4 diffrent control types), and unbalanced characters (I feel like they really hit the balancing homerun).

I'm underwhelmed by the subspace emissary mode. The physics and controls of the game don't lend themselves well to the experience, imo.
I don't believe your comment about the backgrounds is quite accurate. I doubt the N64 could output 480p graphics with the same detail, and as smoothly. Maybe you meant Gamecube, in which case I would probably agree.
The control set is highly customizable with all the buttons (other than movement) being reassignable.
It does feel more like a Smash Bros. Melee 1.5 to me.

Everybody cant like everything. If everyone goes bananas over something that you just don't get, tough titty my friend. People are going to like stuff whether you do or not. I'm pretty sure you go bonkers over somthing (videogame, band, movie, sandwich) that some other person would be like "Meatball sub? what a tool!". It's called subjectivity. Learn it , live it, love it.

Reuptake
Posted 10:37 PM 19/3/08
@fallingdove: To be honest, I sort of know where you're coming from. On the face of it the game can appear a little shallow -- this is coming from someone who's never played any of the Smash Bros games, period.
But, that said, once I played it for awhile (with a friend), and waded through that massive manual (by today's standards), there's a level of depth the the game that is subtle and hidden at first - and the levels are just crazy and fun. The Subspace mode is the game's weakest part - just gotta power through it to get a lot of unlockables.
There's just something incredibly fun about watching Snake beat the snot out of Zelda.

@fallingdove: Of course you don't understand, your troll blinders have completely removed any power you might have to enjoy a game. If anything this is MORE polished then Galaxy, far, far more.
Troll less, play games more. If you don't understand, then stay out of the topics.

@fallingdove: you're on the other end of the extreme then, and i'd have to say you're probably a little biased. do you honestly consider the background graphics n64 quality??? really???
as for horrible control set, the wii wasn't designed to mainly play games like these. that's why for so many of these non-blue-ocean games, nintendo provides so many different control options. sure, the wii remote isn't optimal for playing this game. but can you really say that the other controller options (ie gamecube controller) don't do the job damn well?

Maybe I am the minority here, but I don't understand the celbration of this game. I got the game on Sunday, I have never been so underwhelmed with a game. N64 quality background graphics, horrible control set, unbalanced characters. This is a 9.5 fighting game? I was expecting the polish of Mario Galaxy, I was dissapointed.
I guess it goes to show that attachment to Nintendo nostalgia goes a long way.
