Mushroom Men Info Dump
Posted by Tori Floyd at 2:00 AM on March 15, 2008
No, I'm not talking about a certain pair of plumbers. These Mushroom Men are the kind that lurk in the shadows of everyday life, and hold wars amongst themselves, at least in the two upcoming Mushroom Men games: Mushroom Men: Rise of the Fungi for the Nintendo DS, and Mushroom Men: The Spore Wars on the Wii. So while you look at the screens and concept art from the games, ask yourself this question: why was the Mushroom Man invited to all the parties?
Mushroom Men Fact Sheet
Summary:
Mushroom Men inhabit the world that goes on while we humans are looking the other way, in the twilight hours when we sleep. We tower above them and go about our business completely unaware of the war waged at our feet.
After the comet had passed, the scientists concluded that the strange, green dust had no effect on the world. No one noticed that tiny plants and fungi were acting strangely. Mushrooms, cacti, flowers and vines had awakened to full consciousness. Tribes quickly formed, building plant and fungi nations and with nation building... came war!
Mushroom Men shows gamers the mundane world from the surreal perspective of a three inch high Mushroom Man. As a brave Bolete Mushroom, players can wreak havoc on their enemies by transforming common household trinkets and trash into weapons and tools.
Mushroom Men - Rise of the Fungi is for Nintendo DS and details events leading up to Mushroom Men - The Spore Wars on Wii. Players do not need to play one to enjoy the other.
Features:
- As a character the size of a mushroom, players will explore and battle their way through lush and spooky levels in a hostile and oversized world
- Choose from three different characters on DS or play the heroic misfit on Wii
- Fight hideous spiders, deadly praying mantises, lightning-fast scorpions, enemy Mushroom Men and more
- Wipe out your enemies with unique, spore-based powers
Product Specs:
- Genre: Action Platformer
- Created by: Red Fly Studio
- Publisher: Gamecock Media Group (www.gamecockmedia.com)
- Platforms: Mushroom Men: Rise of the Fungi - Nintendo DS; Mushroom Men: The Spore Wars - Nintendo Wii
- Release Date: DS: Summer 2008; Wii: Fall 2008

The video you saw is from a pre-Alpha build. The music you hear in the video is not from the game and sounds nothing like anything in the game, somebody outside of Red Fly mixed that into the video. The game ships at the end of this year, and there is still a lot of work left to do: AI, movement, and combat are all still in development. That video only bears a fraction of the gameplay in Mushroom Men. Keep in mind that Gamecock is merely the publisher (which means they provide funding) and Red Fly is the studio that actually makes the game. We are two separate entities. Gamecock pretty much leaves us alone to design and implement the game as we please. When the game comes out, it's Red Fly's reputation on the line... not Gamecock's. I hope that make sense.

I didn't know they still made ps1 games...
Seriously, looks horrible, R&C and SMG have set the bar too high for this guys to get away with this crap.

Wow. The music in that video was very repetitive and boring. The game doesn't look that great either.

@Toprem: The game looks as good as most Wii games and that's high praise being a DS game. I really think its art style works well on that platform.

concept art looks good, game looks like liquid shit though. Not that much better can be expected from the Wii.

Quite underwhelming. Great premise a la Sin cat and mouse, but extremely left field of what I was expecting.

@Pezdispenser: This was posted yesterday, and the video was being streamed straight from Gamecock's servers - it wasn't a GameTrailers video.
Now, that won't affect my purchase of the game, I wasn't really planning on buying it anyway, I just found it incredibly annoying.

@Brian Crecente: Hah yeah that's because it was posted yesterday on a few pages back. Was very strange. Fixed now though so yay!
The game looks half decent though... I like the presentation and all but meh - to echo some of the sentiments here, it's just another platformer. Of course, that's just what I gather from the trailer.

I guess no one here has heard of alpha builds, isn't the game still over half a year from release? =\
That aside, I think it looks like it's shaping up to be an interesting platformer. It'll be cool to see how it changes from this demo to the next.

Decent but out of place music, simplistic combat, overly floaty jumps....it lazily moans mediocre.
This looks horrid.

Wii - nay, this entire generation - needs more platformers. I was looking forward to this, but the video has kind of turned me off. Frankly it looks like one of the games from that European developer that keeps busting out shit (Anubis, Ninjabread Man, etc).
Slow combat mechanics are always a bad sign.

Did someone seriously say they weren't going to buy any game from Gamecock just because the video started playing by itself? Last I checked, Gamecock doesn't own Gametrailers, doesn't own Kotaku, and didn't tinker with the settings on your computer.
Anyhoo, the game still looks a little unrefined. Hopefully they improve the model animations before release. Also, I'm praying that that wasn't the actual in game music.

@Callidux: Gamecock is the publisher; the games are being developed by Red Fly Studios. Gamecock antics reflect badly on the games they publish but they are not involved directly in making the games as far as I know.
I am looking forward to this. I like the concept and if the mushroom heros manage to pick up household items to battle spiders and wasps, they are always welcome at my house. I liked floating around, too. Makes platforming, which is hard for me, easier.

@zoesch:
I agree with your 3 points.
Game looks generic as hell. Like any platformer post Mario 64. Mario, Vexx, Sphinx, Spiro... This game is packed with blandness, repetitiveness and fail. And the music is not even DnB is more like some late 90's jungle... I would definetly play Goldie presents: DJ men

@Zaxxon Q Blaque: It's not like it was a trailer that only showed CG cutscenes from the game like TV commercials like to do. It was footage of basic gameplay and after 20+ years of playing games you don't need to actually play the game to be able to pick up on half-assed combat with bad hit detection from a video of someone ELSE actually playing the game.
It has nothing to do with being a new publisher. If it the game was made by Treasure and called Mischeif Makers 2: Mushroom Men it wouldn't change the fact that it looks half assed like a majority of the games we are getting on the Wii.
Seriously, play Ninjabread man. I triple dog dare you.

Check out Mike Wilson's interview on the GDC radio podcast and see if you can't get a better idea of what Gamecock is really about behind the lo-fi marketing:

Lowtech, slightly unnactractive build that this is, I am ALL OVER IT. They could totally do some cool things here, and I'm into mycology. Heh... it'd be cool if they actually wedged some neat biology into there.

Character control looks really floaty, and I don't mean the parts where he's floating. He looks the same when he's walking around, like the animations are covering more ground than they should.
Combat looks...ok. Better get a dustpan to sweep up all the dropped frames. OH!
Seriously, I was expecting more from this game. The real world environments are kinda cool, but the gameplay looks really standard.

art direction looks cool... but just looks like a platform game with uninspiring spider-A.I. and an unfair camera (bee attack from behind? that'd get annoying fast)
but it's early and I hope it improves.

Way too floaty. If the combat system is good and combo-y rather than button-mash-y I might try it out. I'd agree and say the concept art was much cooler than the in game is shaping up to be.

On the concept art: It looked REALLY cool and I wish they made a little bit of a darker game than what was shown in the video but whatevs.
On the game: It seems fun, but if the gravity is always set to "moon bounce" then this game could get old really fast.

Why was the Mushroom Man invited to all the parties? I iz thinking because they be representing yo with lotz of generic DnB to make the Mushroom ladies shake it up!
Booyakasha! Reprazent!
@Android8675: @amazinglarry: I was wondering why all of a sudden the hardcore record I was listening to (Superstatic Revolution, recommended to fans of Coalesce, Converge and Impure Wilhelmina) started to mash up with some generic DnB beats. Autoplaying videos are incredibly annoying.
On to the game, I love platformers, this had all the makings of a must buy game for me until I saw three things:
1)Secret object you reach by sorta walking off a platform and drifting... not cool, the epitome of annoying with analog sticks, it'll be even more annoying with the Wiimote
2)GFX, I'm not a graphics whore but when your levels and graphics alternate between 2001-level PlayStation 2 and 2004-level Gamecube you are doing something wrong, because it can't be that parts of the background looks OK and then the closeup leaves look awful, hopefully they will correct that.
3)Generic DnB (Yes, third time I mention it) is really out of place for the type of game and video, I can stand it for a racing or FPS trailer because you expect it, but on a platformer game? What's next? Goldie presents: DJ men? Super Aphex Brothers on Speed?

I'm hoping the game still has more development time. It's always heartbreaking when I get so psyched for a game based on amazing concept art, and the game just doesn't look like it lives up to it. The game looks fine, but there just wasn't much going on in the video... at least nothing that shows me why I would want to play it rather than just look at screenshots.

I will never buy another Game from Game Cock, not because I find these guys totally pretentious and generally "too cool for schoool", but in reality because, who makes an embedded flash player that starts up without user intervention??
I opened up the latest Yahzee review, and had opened this story in another tab for "later" and all of a sudden 2 videos start blaring away, and I can't figure out why Yahzee sounds like more of a "git" than usual.
Geez these guys are idiots.
