Narnian Prince Of War
Posted by Mike Fahey at 1:27 PM on March 26, 2008
No no, I'm not calling Disney's Prince Caspian game a God of War ripoff. Merely pointing out that Kratos would be quite at home in any one of the battle scenes in this clip for the game of the movie of the book. In fact, I'm looking forward to the game. Having been dipped in Narnia from a very early age might have something to do with it, but I actually enjoyed playing through Traveller's Tales' The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe back in 2005. With TT behind this one as well, perhaps lightning could strike twice?

I 3rd of 4th the old Lord of the Rings EA brawlers for the inspiration on this one. I enjoyed those as time-wasters but I think I got the one for $19.

The Narnia books aren't propaganda, they just rip off the Bible. :P
Seriously though, brilliant books.

@Ashurahori: "Judge a man by his career, not his personal life." Truer words were never spoken.
I've never read the Narnia books myself, so I can't comment as to thier content, but I can comment on Lewis himself...the man is a masterful writer. Make no mistake, when he wrote Narnia (and all of his other books, Screwtape Letters being my personal favorite) he wrote exactly what he intended. There is no accidental propaganda or mistaken claims. If you feel like the book has religious overtones, that's probably becuase it was intended to...or, it was written to make you feel as if it did. (as I said, I can't say yea or nay, because I'm ignorant of this piece of Lewis' work).
But as far as the discussion about Card, the man can have any of his own beliefs, be they about sexuality, politics, religion, or whatever else. You may disagree with them, and I may disagree with them, but they have no bearing on his books unless he wants them to.
As a writer myself, I know that personal feelings are frequently a part of my work...but I can't attest to other writers, especially ones lightyears more accomplished than I. Either way, an author's (or artist's or director's) personal views have no bearing on his or her work whatsoever, and they are no reason to judge a work. If, however, those feelings begin to become prevalent in said work, then they are open game for comment...not because they are the views the author shares, but because they are part of the art.
Long story short, it's best to keep it professional. :)
On topic...this game looks horrific. Perhaps if I had read the books or seen the movie (old or new) then I'd be more geeked, but as it stands, I see a weak copy of (insert hack'n'slash game here). Color me unimpressed.

keep in mind that lewis was writing the narnia books as children's fantasy in the late 40s/early 50s. fantasy wasn't so much "OMGZ HACK SLASH LOOT KEKEKEKE" as it was an escapist form of satire and allegory. i love the occasional good fantasy [tolkien, martin, etc.] but could care less about the typical, formula fiction releases [jordan, goodkind, and their legion of compatriots] and i believe a good part of the difference [aside from the obvious "CAN THAY WRITE GUD?"] lies in what is left to the imagination. fantasy is one realm in which you should NOT have to describe every element in its most minute detail. tolkien relished in his landscapes, martin in his character development, and jordan... well, jordan gave us a thorough atlas of his world along with a 5,000 page thesis on how MAGICKS work.
i wouldn't want a thirty page battle from lewis anymore than i'd care for a thirty page research paper on the hierarchical structure of the friggin aes sedai.

I find it annoying how everyone always says that the Narnia books are Christian propaganda and that the Dark materials are atheist propaganda. I found that to be so interesting I actually read some of the books and realized that it wasn't that interesting and that it wasn't any "Oh my god! I read this book and now I'm going to start/stop worshipping God!" type of propaganda and more subtle sort of (sometimes) unintentional things that probably won't affect you in any way.

@juliopalio: Actually, I have read the first two, and I wasn't focusing on the religious propaganda. I just threw that in on the side. My main issue is with the fact that the books just plain suck at describing action. A week-long battle with fifteen different factions will take place over 150 words. And that battle will be the supposed focus of the book. The real focus is on blathering pointlessly in an action-fantasy story, in order to piss off the readers.

@TheEngineer: Rocking the Goggles: Orson Scott Card is homophobic.
...he's also a big FOX News supporter for their constantly truthful reports and careful investigation, so I think we're pretty much settled on the man's sanity.
But hell, judge a man by his career, not his personal life. Just look at Michael Jackson and Bill Clinton.
...okay, this comment for a little off-hand.

Just stop the religious jokes. We get it. Narnia's religious propaganda, His Dark Materials is hell-bait, and Ender's Game is a homophobic depiction of the world.

Wait, I thought this was a Narnia game.
Shouldn't all the epic battles be a singular scene that flashes for 30 seconds, before going back to talking about how Jesus is great?
I mean, Jesus is great and all, but it's supposed to be a fantasy book, not propaganda.

But it looks like a pile of shit, IMO.

Reminiscent of Oblivion, God of War, Lord of the Rings, Christ there were even bits that echoed Final Fantasy 12...so, its a fantasy fighting game. Slightly more creative than being a shooter, I suppose. I'm interested to see how the second movie comes out, given that I loved the books and thought the first movie was decent.

What? How is this related to GoW exactly. They take place in what you may be able to call similar settings. Also, it's not like Disney created this setting themselves, with the sole purpose of making it look like GoW.

You know what Mike, I was just thinking about how much I enjoyed beating the first game with my nephew. Good, wholesome, movie tie in magic. It brought me back to my days as a youth playing cheap Genesis games based on movies and enjoying them solely because I loved the films.
I mean Jurassic Park and Aladdin are two of the best games to ever grace the Genesis.

Prince Caspian in a loincloth vs. Kratos in a loincloth would be an epic video game battle imo. That is until Aslan the lion jumps in and just eats both of them.

I would be very, VERY, surprised if any right-wing ultra-religious pundits use this game as a scapegoat for all of societies ills.
Killing fake demons in Doom or Quake: Very bad for your child with all the violence.
Killing human beings that are heathens to the Church in the game: Understandable and protecting the way of life.
