Nerd Wedding Afoot, Mii Invitations Abound
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 1:00 AM on March 25, 2008
Nerds get married all the time. Nothing new there. But nerds getting married in style, well, that is something new. This is the invite that's been sent out to friends and family of 4 Colour Rebellion's Vinnk. And it's just great. Tasteful use of Miis in a formal ceremonial invitation and the joyous union of two crazy kids in love? Unprecedented.

...when I see this, I am always relieved that my computer hating girlfriend hinders me from getting too geeky. But we all choose our own misery, and as long as we enjoy it, nobody else should complain. So, all the best to them!
What annoys me more, is the above above mentioned cliche of Japanese girl + western guy couples (submissive wife who just wanted to score a foreigner, idiot guy, who would never ever score anything anywhere else - at least without paying). The only thing which is worse is when those cliches are true.
Ok, living in Japan and having a Japanese fiance might be part of that dislike...

Congratulations in advance to both. I enjoyed the humor, particularly "Wife Get!". Good luck to them in the future.

By the time I ever have a long term relationship that I'/m committed to, let alone get married, these things will become commonplace, or worse, considered "used, and now stupid". Seriously. Stop, so that when I have a gaming wedding, it's still cool.

@SchwarzerWind: Wow way to make some pretty negative assumptions there. You have no reason to believe any of the crap you're spouting.

I'm a bit tired of all the Wii puns, but I do think the "wife get" part is pretty cute.

@OneGuy1: "It's always awesome when two people can bond over video games. I hope those two crazy kids make it!"
Actually, if you go to the originating site for this, and read the original post, and then go to another link on that post (his engagement post), you can see a photo of them after he popped the question as well as some more information on this engagement.
His wife isn't a gamer at all (by his own admission), and he also lives and works in Japan (if I'm reading the site properly), where his now-wife is from (he's white).
So taking all of that in, I think this is more the "submissive{sp} Japanese wife" going along silently with whatever crazy ass idea the husband comes up with.
I'm quite sure deep down she doesn't actually like this, but she went along with it (maybe perhaps because he wouldn't shut up about it? That's -pure- speculation). Smothering something related to Their wedding in a hobby only He has an interest in is very selfish.
I'll guarantee you two things though: One, years from now, when they're old and looking back on their wedding, this is going to seem like such a childish thing (she might even be resentful over time). And two, I'll bet five bucks that a good amount of people in each of their families had some things to say about it, I'd bet especially the older ones, they just didn't say anything directly to him. I'm sure that woman's been asked at least once "What was the deal with those wedding invitations, dear? When do we get the real ones?"
I'm a guy btw. And I'm married.

My idea for creative wedding invites was custom Viewfinder reels. (With a Viewfinder viewer to watch them with, of course.) Hopefully I will get to use that idea at some point.

@Setzer IIDX: That's what I was thinking. I like the idea but Miis are so ugly that I couldn't imagine putting them on my wedding invitations.

That is awesome like a possum.
When me and my wife sent out our invites we had the wife's sister photoshop a picture of Wind Waker Link and Zelda so that they looked like they were holding hands. It was great, nearly none of our family knew that it was video game related, thus no grief.

Very cool card though, kudos to the guy and gal for their fantastic idea. I wish them luck.

I have to be honest and say Mii's are a big missed opportunity. Its something i fussed about for all of 15min until I realized something. Since Nintendo's online strategy is almost non-existant there's not much you can do with these things. True you can post them on the Mii channel but imagine if Nintendo had a persistent online persona that you could use like the 360's gamertags. Then Mii's would be the shizzle. Instead they are the mehizzle.

I really hope this stuff doesn't age badly, because you've got a generation of kids coming that will laugh their heads off at nerdy ol' Granddad.
...what am I saying, I'd love that if I could get away with it. Shame my fiancee has my balls secured quite snuggly in a bench vice, her elbow on the screw.

I hope these are only sent to their gaming friends because no one will understand the context of "Wife Get" otherwise.

Marriages are fantastic, if they work for you. Good luck, and congrats, if either of you two stop by this board.
On a different note, Miis are hideous. Long live sackboys.

I'll take you up on that $5 bet. Since you know nothing about me, I think I have a fairly good chance of winning it. My fiancée is anything but submissive. In the more than 3 years we have been dating I have never seen her back down from an argument. She is not a gamer by any means but like most people who have tried it, she enjoys playing with the Wii and she was very enthusiastic about this invitation. She designed her Mii for it and actually changed it a few times so she could get it "Just right". When selecting our invitations we had several options, she is the one who made the final decision about the Mii cards. She also told the wedding planner to put he Miis on our menu cards for the reception. I didn't even know she did this until she showed it to me.
Thy myth about the submissive Japanese wife is just that, a myth. For you future reference I suggest the book, "The Modern Madame Butterfly: Fantasy and Reality in Japanese Cross-Cultural Relationships" by Karen Ma. (ISBN: 0-8048-2041-4) you might find it interesting.
My future wife is independent, strong, and intelligent. By far the most wonderful person I have ever encountered in my life. Say what you want about me (perhaps I am childish or selfish) but don't belittle her with some "submissive Japanese woman" stereotype.
True, in a few years we might look back on this and wonder, "What were we thinking?" It's will probably be as lame as if we had made a wedding card 20 years ago with the word "Rad" on it, but for right now we both think it is really cute.
