New PS3 Firmware Allows PS2 Game HDD Installation [Update]
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 1:00 AM on March 14, 2008
Listen to this! According to the Japanese PlayStation.com page, today's update also allowed users to put PlayStation 2 game installs on the PS3's hard drive. That's besides stabilising PS3 software. So, there ya go!
PS3 Update [PlayStation.com via Strategy Informer]
Eds Note: So according to Strategy Informer: "Seems that the Japanese website is actually detailing information about compatibility with Final Fantasy XI, which required a HDD for the PS2. So, any games that require HDD installs for the PS2 will now work on the PS3." Cruuuuuuud. Nothing to get *that* excited about! Well, unless you're stoked to play FFXI on your PS3 it is.

@gnudna:
You have a good point surprised nobody responed to it. By getting a PS3 you could just exchange copies of games with friends and soon have such a wide selection of games that it would have cost you more to buy a PS2 and the games. This would sell a ton of copies.
I know its useless but I'm still hoping Sony will surprise us and release Home, playstation store update, and this latest development all it once in like early spring or preferably in next 5 min.:)

@djricekcn:
I was afraid of that. I find music games are typically extremely hard to emulate, and I've confirmed in the past that other Konami games, namely DDR for PSX even synched by framerate (so converting PAL to NTSC makes the arrows go almost double speed while the music is normal...) Though if it's consistent and doesn't skip I can play with 10-20ms lag since I use sound as a cue and the screen as sheet music basically.
I pretty much got my PS2 because I was afraid it would get too hard to get all the IIDX games legally if I waited longer. (Caught up to 10th now...) I'll be keeping it in good shape for many years to come, especially since they're all Japanese games and legit or not my PS3 will refuse them.

@Gannoc: Just get a HDloader if you really have to have PS2 games ripped to your HDD i have one and it works flawless. Don't wait on sony to allow you to do this cause they never will i paid 10 bucks for my PS2 games and then traded them all in. So i still have a virtual copy of my games on my PS2's HDD.

Since I updated, browsing the Web is a lot quicker [page load time etc], but you would have thought Sony would have mentioned that in thr PR...
It also detected that I have an MS keyboard attached [to the PS3, not me], and the console would shut down until I removed it...

@muu: It definitely did under certain conditions, but, the recently released expansion's "collection" edition would not install. So perhaps they have addressed something that caused problems in some cases... hopefully. I don't know why anyone would get so excited about this update, even Sony said it was nothing but stability fixes and this would fit in to that statement.

Great news for all those who can't play PS2 games!
For those who can, enjoy FFXI if you still play and don't have a PC version or a PS2. Also, I think Beatmania IIDX 5th Style owners will be happy - that is, if the controller had somewhere to plug into. Guess that one's stuck on PS2.
So that leaves HDLoa--haha, yeah right.
See? Sure I'll give Sony props but they have to earn them! This sounds... really dumb. Right up there with releasing FFXI and then shortly after discontinuing the fat PS2 that can have a hard drive. Remove PS2 support, then expand it.

A friend of mine and I both played FFXI on the PS2 and when we switched to PS3's I bough the 60GB and he got the 80GB (without hardware emulation for PS2 games). The 80GB version did not work with FFXI, even with the PS2 download from the store, but my 60GB one worked with no problems after the download.
Is it possible that this update makes FFXI function on the newer PS3's (20, 40 & 80GB) without the hardware emulation?

@njhardcoreguy: PS2 sales are slowly dieing anyway. I can't imagine Blockbuster or any other rental store is gonna have a huge selection of PS2 games for long. I bet if Sony did include this feature it would be after PS2 game sales are down and the majority of people using it would be people who already own the games.
I doubt they would expect installing PS2 games to attract anymore people to buy PS2 games. If theres a PS2 game you want, you've bought it regardless.

@Neo-Senku: Indeed. Looking back, I maybe should have opted for the 60GB. They had it in the store and it would have literally cost me the same money that I spent on the 40GB with games anyway.
But I won't complain about that or be sad now that it's way too late. I just want Sony to release software emulation. I know they're cooking something up, I simply know it. ;)

As for piracy being a big issue, that would assume that every PS2 owner on the planet switches to a PS3.. Hint hint this would be the equivalent of an A-bomb to the competition. Cause like it or not the PS2 will be slowly phased out as the numbers for the PS3 continue to increase. And actually having a feature like this is possible threw an emulator aka like vmware does for the PC which is far more complex.

I wish they would finally add the in game XMB. It would also be nice if you could listen to music and browse the web while in remote play. It works when not using remote play, so why add this limitation when using the PSP to view? Being able to access all the PS3 settings via remote play would be nice too, but I can understand why that limitation was put in place.
