Orange Box Broken Up On April 9
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 3:34 PM on March 6, 2008
Back in February, Valve said they've be splitting the PC version of The Orange Box up and releasing each of the titles separately at retail. They said they were going to do it in March. They're not. They're going to be doing it in April. April 9 to be precise, and while we still don't have any word on individual prices, picking up the entire HL2 saga in one box should be a bargain not to be missed.

i ended up buying TF2 about a week before the orange box hit steam, and now i'm going to go get Portal :D

I never bought Orange Box due to lack of HL2 interest, but I'd buy Portal separate. I was at GDC to see it win several awards and I've heard lots of good things. I want to see what all of the hype is about.

Of course this would matter to me if there wasn't already 9 different ways to buy HL2 at retail right now. Not that anybody doesn't own the game at this point either.

They are already offered seperate on steam. Download takes a while and you'll need a credit card, but still...

Great. I have Halflife 2 and Episode 1 already so i was never interested in the complete package. Now i can get TF2 wich is the only thing i want from the orange box.
And i will wait till Portal drops to 9,90 since i can wait and don“t want to pay 10$/hour for video games. Im pretty hardcore and such price/hour ratios would ruin me pretty fast ;)

@bangbangblah:
Same here. Except that bit about Mac users.
@Ollivander:
How much was Orange Box? $50? It seems a bit harsh to charge more for HL2.2 and TF2 as standalones than for the Orange Box triple pack, but if that's what they're charging on Steam, I guess it's not likely to change much. Still, saves me $30...

@music2134: What this person said: $20/game is my guess too.

@Dragon_Warrior: lol, but i see Manok's point .. if you're willing to spend $50 on TF2, why not get TF2 w/ all this other stuff? My guess is the prices will match the online Steam purchase prices.

Hmm Portal sounds awesome and I while I like FPSs there are only so many Doom clones I can take before it seems like more of the same. I may just get the whole Orange Box eventually but Portal really has me intrigued.

I don't have time to play HL2:Ep 1 or 2 (I've only played Half-Life 2) but I really wanted to try Portal so using Steam I purchased it for $20 about 2 months ago. Sometimes I think back and regret that I didn't pony the extra $30 for the full box but then I realize that a) I don't have the money really (not after my computer upgrades) and b) I really, really don't have time to spare.

They should do something similar with the PS3 version through PSN considering they don't have file size restrictions.

Is there anyone in the world who wanted any of these games that hasn't already bought them?
I wouldn't spend $20 on anything except TF2. Portal was amazing but it was also 3 hours, plus another hour for the extra maps or so, and it's a puzzle game so it doesn't have the replayability (outside of usermade maps) that an action game does, cuz you can't go through and goof around trying to solve a puzzle like you can goof around in a shooter

Portal is awesome. But buying it as a standalone? It only takes an hour or two to finish. Unless they throw in some extra levels/challenges.

Isn't the whole point of this to split the games up? Then why is Episode Two only available with Episode One (which is still available on its own)?
Doesn't affect me, but still - wackiness.

why? the orange box is probably the best deal around for video game goodness. I still play TF2 daily and would have paid $50 for that alone.

I don't see the particular need for this, since people can buy them piece by piece online as it is. Unless you get to avoid steam entirely (which I suspect is not the case) people who want the games already bought them and downloaded them via Steam.
Maybe in the case of Portal it would require using Steam but if you were going to buy TF2 you'd have to go into their online proprietary service anyway. Sure it might be a quicker install time but then patches would take a while to dl, not to mention the time spent doing out to the store and etc. etc.
Ah well, I can't see the need, but I know people will buy them regardless
