Puzzle Quest Being Considered for iPhone
Posted by Brian Crecente at 8:40 AM on March 14, 2008
Yesterday I whined a bit about the lack of original announced titles coming to the iPhone. Specifically, very specifically, I called out Infinite Interactive, asking why they haven't jumped onto the iPhone bandwagon yet.
We all know the world can't get enough Puzzle Quest... well, at least I can't get enough of it. And the thought of being able to play the very touch-perfect puzzle RPG on my iPhone gives me goosebumps. So after my little hint didn't result in any immediate announcement of an iPhone Puzzle Quest or Galaxtrix, I took matters into my own hands and emailed Infinite Interactive to see what was up.
Janeen Fawkner, producer on the game was quick to respond:
Hi Brian, We would love to do a game on the iPhone, but we'll have to see what our publisher D3P has in mind... We'll suggest it to them :)
Sounds good, but I'm impatient, so I went to D3 next, asking when we could hope to see a Puzzle Quest on the iPhone and pointing out that Inifinite was gung-ho. Their spokesperson's response?
They're looking into details now and will get back to me soon.
Now, now, I want it now! I even made this handy-dandy screenshot for them. You can imagine what a pain I was to my parents when I was a kid.

No problems playing iZoo aka Bejeweled 2 on the iPhone, and those gems aren't exactly huge. Don't see how this game would be a problem.
Where did all the experienced comments posters go?

The iPhone doesn't function with a stylus: it requires skin, which is why using your fingernail doesn't work. Something about electrons.

I'm thinking that D3P owns the IP, so even if the developers AND the fans want it, they won't get it until the fat man sings.

Do any of you actually have an iPhone? If so kindly open a text message and look at the size of the keyboard in vertical mode. Small? Yes. Usable? Absolutely.
All it would take to bring this game to the iPhone is an intuitive enlargement dynamic or some other kind of UI voodoo the iPhone (through its developers) is so great at.

@ThisCharmingMan: I hear that, but if the sci-fi sequel can be played on the Touch...

Hm, I don't knnow if I'd be able to resist buying this again...I already own it on 360 and DS...

Seriously though, this is not a good idea. It's really easy to misclick in Safari, just think of how many times you'll be penalized in PQ because of your chubby fingers :(

It would fit well. I totally loved the stylus/touch screen control on the DS (but can no longer play it on DS since the XBLA version is so much better)

Wow, two things I've avoided because they might take way too much of my time (Puzzle Quest, iPhone) and money in the iPhone's case, rolled into one!
@comedy: You have to love the puzzle game first, I think. I am very, very attracted to it, but again I just have balanced that against...well having a life and have decied to avoid it ;)

@LittleBigPlaneteer: that was a sincere question, i wasn't inspired even after half an hour of play... you say it takes more than that to understand why it's so addictive? i spose i could give it another shot... but then again i AM pretty lazy.

Kotaku, making game companies recognize we're whores since 2005.
I'd be down for this. The more "serious gamer" games the better on the iPhone...

This game would be pretty cool on the iPhone. I'd pay for it.
The screen and touch lend itself pretty well. I just hope they wouldn't throw in the gimmicky accelerometer based based controls.

For those doubting puzzle quest even before they try it...
THIS IS NOT YOUR MOM'S PUZZLE GAME, I repeat THIS IS NOT YOUR MOM'S PUZZLE GAME
this is more of strategy and jrpg with puzzling elements driving the action instead of cumbersome menus and potions and such
at its core its the puzzle concept but in reality and how the game plays its more like your srpgs and jrpgs
This game ROX. I don't like the iPhone but I wouldn't object puzzle quest spreading to more audiences out there, but then again its iPhone...ughh the sorely overpriced, overhyped, feature lacking phone

I play the game before bed to make me tired. I play on my 360 with the Chrono Trigger soundtrack playing in the background. It's fun, but puts me right to sleep after a while, because it's kind of hypnotizing.
My friend used to do the same thing to fall asleep at the end of the day with Final Fantasy Tactics Advance when he was deployed in Iraq ^^

This would be difficult because the gems would be teensy. Unless they made the entire grid have less gems...eh. Not the best fit.

@krunkjuice:
I think termite have a point there if the game is too difficult for player to play and enjoy it, then it's the game's fault.
But Puzzle quest really isn't that difficult...

My only gripe about puzzle quest is that the Warrior is overpowered, build up full red bar, then enrage, the move that turns all red gems into skulls, then the move that randomly makes a number of skulls based on half your red mana, and the match is over... this also will freeze your psp with awesome.

@lonecow12: Don't let them get to ya, I also found this game to be tedious and boring... I like puzzle games but playing them against an npc just reveals how absolutely terrible I am at them. It might be fun in small doses, but I certainly can't play for more than 30 minutes at a time before I get tired of it.

I've played the game. The concept sounded fun and I thought I would like it, but I didn't.
I don't comment on games I haven't played.

@Moonshadow101: Or seeing as how the screen is ginormous, they could just make the gems bigger?

@LittleBigPlaneteer: It works on the DS screen because you have a stylus. You'd have to play the iPhone version with your fingernail or something or they'd need to come up with an alternate input method, I'd expect.

Downloadable games aren't supposed to have required peripherals.

@lonecow12: This game is crack. No no...its more than that. Its super crack. I had the same thoughts on it you have before playing the demo went it came out for XBLA. I played the demo for like 5 hrs. Then I realized I should just buy it. Its like bejeweled but because you get magic and stuff there is more strategy involved. The story is typical and the puzzling is slightly above average but combining gets you something super. Super Crack.

Gems are smaller than your finger. You'd need to zoom in on the grid or something... it'd get messy.
And while we're at it, let's all bitch about other people liking a game that we don't like. I can't imagine anything more sensible or productive.

What is so great about Puzzle Quest. Everyone in gaming press freaks out over this game, and I just can't get into it. I'ts bejeweled right? With a crappy RPG storyline? Awesome.
I should also mention that I think Patapon is highly overrated.
