Resistance for PSP Is "Possible"
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 8:00 PM on March 6, 2008
We sure liked Resistance. It's a good game! So good that some people wish that they could take it will them on the bus and train and shoot-up aliens. That's be super! But is it going to happen? Insomniac Games bossman Ted Price says:
Sure. I think that's possible... I think Killzone demonstrated that it doesn't have to be a first-person shooter. I think Killzone: Liberation was a fantastic game, but a very different game from the original. Anything is possible. You heard that? Non FPS Resistance on PSP, cats living with dogs, mass hysteria — anything is possible!

Just because something is "possible" dosen't mean it should be done. I think we all learned that lesson from watching Jurrassic Park. "Your scientists were so preocupied with whether or not that they could, they didn't stop to think if they should".....

He did say "possible" not "probable"... right?

I enjoyed Killzone Liberation. The top down perspective fits perfectly with the PSP's controls.

What I like about Liberation are the web-accessible bonuses. If they can expand on that with Resistance PSP, and have that connect with Home in some way, they could have a top seller on their hands.

Funnily enough, Killzone on the psp was better than it was on the PS2

I also want to confess my love for Killzone: Liberation... if you love action games you should check it out, it will be a cheap venture too.
As someone said before, Guerrillas (ridiculous name by the way) well considered move to portables is what is needed when converting a franchise from a console.
If Liberation is anything to go by, Killzone 2 will be very very awesome.

Please keep PSP Resistance as a FPS.

I will be welcome if its a 3d person Syphon Filter style game.
In unrelated news, I want Max Payne on my PSP!

Killzone: Liberation was absolutely brilliant. So much more enjoyable than the original Killzone. If they do move the Resistance IP over to the PSP hopefully they will do it in a simular inteligent and considered manner.

Creating "sequels" to games on handhelds is so stupid when the sequel is a completely new take on gameplay. All they do is surf on a familiar franchise.

@Winterbringer: They could. The Dreamcast and N64 both proved that single analog shooters work just fine as long as they're "console style" rather than "PC style". I think EA, Konami, and whoever else attempted or may attempt an FPS on the PSP simply needs to be reminded of that fact.
Fuck it. Just get Sega to port Outtrigger to the PSP and call it a day. We've already got Power Stone and Crazy Taxi...may as well keep the Dreamcast titles comin'.

@DragonSphere: Meh. "Bite size chunks" are what portables have always been built on. Wholly original, robust IPs are the icing on the cake, don't let Pokemon fool you into thinking otherwise. And let's face it, even if someone did make a completely original God of War-esque title for the PSP, too many would bitch that it isn't "portable friendly".
It's really just one's perception at play here...
Is an original 20-40 hour RPG necessarily any more "handheld appropriate" or "well suited to the system" simply because it's original vs. being a Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, or Tales of... title?
What makes an original 6-10 hour action title on a handheld robust whereas a God of War entry is simply "fun sized"?
Handhelds are really about replicating and streamlining the core experience on the go more than they are necessarily present for delivering the same move for move and hour for hour gameplay. The PSP has brought us as close as any have come to the latter, but that's still not part of the handheld mantra and certainly not what many developers necessarily attempt...and if you look at the finer (non-ported) games on either the PSP or DS you'll see this very point in action.

Killzone: Liberation was a phenomenal game, but the Killzone universe is a far richer and more interesting one to pull from than what's offered in Resistance.
As great of an FPS as Resistance is (one of my personal favs), I don't think it would work nearly as well in a non-FPS format...the disparate elements of character design, setting, etc. just aren't strong enough to transition all that well. On the other hand, if anyone can pull it off I believe Insomniac can. Though with any luck it will be an FPS as the PSP is sorely in need of a decent one...and the folks at Insomniac may be the systems last hope for a well produced title in that genre.

i think the real question is does it need to be on the PSP in the first place?
Sure, Killzone/Daxter/Size Matters/Chains of Olympus are good games in their own right, but I'd much rather see new IP being properly developed for the system than bite-sized chunks of games we already play on our consoles.

I was thinking more in the lines of Remote Play with both Resistance 1 & 2, but a new Resistance for the PSP works for me.
Since I'm only buying it for God of War, resistance for the PSP is another reason for me.

I feel Resistance isn't Resistance if it isn't FPS. It could be an alright cash-in for some, but it isn't the game that I fell in love with. Release a PSP FPS and you'll have me at the first kiss.

I played KillZone liberation on the PSP briefly - not quite the same as the PS2 version.
Personally, I feel that the resistance experience is the online aspect, if the can't replicate this on PSP - then it ain't resistance.

So will it be similar to Killzone Liberation or something along the line of Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters? I hope for the latter than the former.
