Rondo Of Swords - A New Approach To Turn-Based Strategy
Posted by Mike Fahey at 1:10 PM on March 13, 2008
Rondo of Swords, coming soon for the Nintendo DS via Atlus, looks like your standard turned-based strategy, but once you've see it in motion you'll quickly realise it's an altogether different animal. While some elements are the same - you still equip your characters, level them up using experience, catch snippets of storyline in-between battles - the unique Route Manoeuvre System is what sets it apart. Rather than simply sidle up to your enemy and hit attack, you actually program a path through them, allowing you to damage multiple enemies at once. I've spent a bit of time recently playing through the game, and so far I am really liking what I am seeing.
The key to playing Rondo is letting go of your old turn-based strategy habits. Seeing a screen filled with enemies heading your way is very daunting until you realise that a few well-placed charges through their ranks will leave them completely decimated. You've also got to realise that having your characters too close together means the enemy can charge through you as well, so it isn't only about where your route takes you, but your final destination as well.
Basically it works like this. You select your character, which has a defined movement range. Instead of a flashing dot showing your final destination, a route marker shoots our from your character as you move the cursor. The only limitations to movement are you cannot cross your own path, and cannot land on another character or enemy. Once you choose your route you get moving, with combat taking place in the form of a sort of cutscene on the upper screen. If an opponent counter-attacks or blocks you, your charge stops, potentially leaving you very vulnerable.
You can also plan your route through allied units, some of which add effects to your active character when they pass by. This adds yet another layer of strategy to an already strategy rich system.
Then you have to figure in a unit's Momentum Counter points. The more enemies you defeat, the higher your MC raises, increasing the likelihood of enemy attacks. Certain skills can lower a unit's MC drastically, allowing them to move nearly unseen through the enemy ranks and strike vital targets. Likewise, you might need to be careful with your spellcasters, who can take out groups of enemies at once at the cost of having every baddie on the map suddenly gunning for their robe-wearing asses.
It really is a lot to take in. I found myself replaying levels over again after completing them, playing around with the system, seeing what worked for me. I often found myself using my front line fighters to make a huge bloody racket at the beginning of a stage to allow my more stealthy character to reach an objective relatively unscathed, or changing up my troops' routes in order to optimise positioning for the enemy turn.
There's much more to Rondo of Swords than the Route Manoeuvre System of course. You can send inactive characters on errands during battles in order to gain training, items, and open up new quests, for instance. There's the skill system, which allows you to spend skill points on each unit every level to learn new abilities or strengthen ones they already possess. Want your caster to have every spell in the book at a weak level or a limited number of extremely powerful ones? It's all up to you.
Having only played about a third of the way through the game, I'm quite impressed with Rondo so far. The storyline can get a little dull at times, but turn-based strategy storylines are rarely their major selling point. It's all about the combat system, and Rondo of Swords' movement-based system makes traditional TBS mechanics seem like they're standing still.
Rondo of Swords is due out April 15th for the Nintendo DS from Atlus.

@Witzbold:
Nice! But is it Wi-Fi? Otherwise the MP part is pointless for me because...I don't have many local friends with DSes D=

@Byakko: Yeah I have it, its similar to diablo and has something like the skill progression tree + putting points into your character stats. So the MP can be up to 3 players at once.

Heh, first time I heard that title, I kept thinking of Huxley and Brave New World, and all the nice 'holidays' the game would bring...
Yeah, it looked promising, but was it multiplayer? I can't remember...
@yanya: That's good. REALLY LATE, but good.

@Byakko: I think FFTA2's supposed to be released in the US late June? At least, that's what both GameFly and GameStop say (last I checked)...
Plus apparently, it's confirmed by Game Informer:

@Channing:
True that!
(Off-topic, I'm so disappointed that Ring of Fates isn't Wi-Fi enabled T___T WTF!? I finally find a 'dungeon crawler' that's actually pretty good on a handheld, and I have to play local wirelessly ONLY?)

@Nesagwa: I thought the exact same thing about 'Faselei!' Quite the great little NGPC cart, it was.
Sounds like this system is quite a bit more in-depth, though--probably can't just hop in the Homura and crash into everything but the final boss to win.

I'm up for ANY GOOD tactical RPGs on the DS right now. ANY. Because apparently Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2 refuses to be English!
So, it's Rondo, Disgaea DS, FFTA2 English if it exists...my year is compete :3

Ho, This is a very interesting game, and also exciting. Yes, I like the game. I will try it. Internet is a good place to share information and meet friends. I recently found a nice web site called pubspa.com where you can meet friends who have same interest in beauty care, massage, wellness and spa treatment. You can also share blog, video, game, photos, etc with people from all over the world. Unlike other online dating sites where you have to pay membership fee, this site is totally free. I already made several interesting friends there.

I'm inclined to agree with them.
Its not just the 'blonde in armor', its the expression, eyes, hair style, the armor style, the pose...
Its all very Saber-ish.

@Boolean: True the rail aspect makes things feel constrained, however it was the first on rails RPG I've ever played so it was a nice change. I loved the anime-humor of it. And to be fair, the enemy was punished for damaging you. So it kinda becomes a race. xD

Ah, Atlus, you're my darling this spring. What with Persona 3: FES and Rondo of Swords, it'll be Atlus in my heart - and my systems - for a good while.
I've oft enjoyed the Strategy RPG genre, but I had the fortune (or misfortune?) of having FFTactics be my first, and no others ever quite measuring up to that pinnacle of enjoyability and just the right amount of customization. I doubt that Rondo of Swords will make great strides in the customizing-of-characters, but I do think this new take on the strat-RPG battle system sounds really promising; certainly worth the price of admission. Movement and placing has always been important, but this game seems set to take it and turn it into the prime factor.
Even if it's not a modern classic, if it even delivers half the fun I hope it does, I'll still be a very happy player. Story/characters are always a major deal to me, of course, but especially on a portable system, I'm really looking for something with an engaging gameplay where I look forward to getting in battles. There's only a handful of RPGs I can really say that about without reservations - here's hoping Rondo of Swords is another contender for that list!

@Furious_Liver: Riviera was fun, but definitely an RPG-lite.

@Furious_Liver: I prefer Yggdra Union.
Riviera was an RPG on rails. My feeling of complete lack of control, I could deal with. But what was with being punished for doing damage to the enemy. "Thanks for doing your job player, why don't you take this reward: a ridiculous super attack?" The only way to get the rage bar down is to kill time, and since most of your items only did damage (increases rage bar), all you are left with are healing items, which aren't exactly common, hardly enough to warrant using them to bring the rage bar down in every single fight...
That said, the game was gorgeous, and aside from that one aspect of the combat system, enjoyable. Yggdra Union just happened to be more gorgeous, and less frustrating. =D
[Speaking of whcih, was it just me or was the first encounter with Mr. Genocide incredibly difficult? Genocide/Cannons/Ankhs are no fun.]

Damn it Atlus. I want to buy your stuff. I love your obscure Japanese RPG's that I never seem to finish (Riviera, Yggdra Union, Etrian Odyssey). You bring 'em over to the states, I'll buy them even though I know deep down that I won't be able to find the time to actually complete them.
But you got to get your timing down. I have yet to beat AW:DoR (or AW:DS for that matter). Not to mention the fact that all my gaming time will be spent on Brawl for weeks, maybe months to come. And then here you come along with a nifty game that very may well be impossible to find unless I buy it immediately. Even though I have a massive backlog of your games. You have inadvertently made me a slave to consumer culture. And even though I know that what you're doing to me, the alluring poison that you peddle is too tempting. I will inevitably give in. I always do, Atlus. I'm completely under your control. Why do you abuse me so?

Sounds interesting enough, however as an avid tactical RPG player I find myself irritated by small changes to the formula.

In the end, I'm all for more tactical rpgs :D
