R-Type Of Virtual Console Update
Posted by Mike Fahey at 1:40 AM on March 18, 2008
This week's update for the Nintendo Wii virtual console delves into the dark places, whether they are deep within the earth or in the icy depths of space. Go digging in the dirt with Spelunker (500 Wii points), the NES version of the classic computer game that puts you in the muddy boots of an archaeologist hell-bent on disturbing ancient spirits in his quest for valuable cash and prizes. If Indiana Jones and Mario had a baby, he'd be spelunker's protagonist. Ew. Get rid of that disturbing mental image with thoughts of the only thing stronger than R-Type...Super R-Type! Pretty much a port of R-Type and R-Type II mashed together, the original game was fraught with slowdown, and the lack of mid-level checkpoints made it a real bitch of a shmup. If the Virtual Console release fixes the slowdown issue it could very well be worth picking up. Just don't look at me to try it first. I used to have nightmares about this game.
WII-KLY UPDATE: TWO NEW CLASSIC GAMES ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNELMarch 17, 2008
Are you afraid of the dark? If so, this is a great week to face your fears with a pair of eerie new game offerings on Nintendo's Virtual Console. One will plunge you deep underground to navigate perilous caves, while the other puts you on the front lines of a darkly sinister space war. In either case, your frights will give way to serious fun.Nintendo adds new games to the Wii Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:
Spelunker (NES, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): Wander through miles of uncharted caves in search of the legendary underground pyramid and its vast treasures. To complete your adventure, you will swing from ropes and ladders, run across unstable terrain and down ravines, operate elevators, mining carts and rafts. You will collect keys, bombs, flares, jewels, sacks of gold coins and other valuable items as you navigate the hazardous terrain. But beware of the scalding steam vents, poisonous bats and the avenging spirits of dead spelunkers that lurk in every corner of this massive underground labyrinth.
SUPER R-TYPE (Super NES, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone Mild Fantasy Violence, 800 Wii Points): A galactic battle begins. The BYDO Empire of mutant extraterrestrials is back with evil intent and awesome power. Now the evil empire is poised to launch a new attack on Earth. Only the revolutionary R-9, the planet's most advanced form of defence, stands between these monsters and doom. Fight through seven challenging stagespicking up power-up items as you progresson the way to each stage's memorable boss. Is the BYDO Empire invincible? You'll need lightning reflexes, intuitive moves and a big dose of cosmic luck to hold your own. Better prepare yourself, because the mutants "R" ready for you.

@futurebiblehero: I've noticed this on a few shooter sites/threads and it makes me sad. FPSes appropriating the shooter name makes me sadder, though. Someone actually replied to me on a forum once with "it looks like you're a fan of shooters" and I thought, wow, he must be psychic! Then I realized what he meant and I was deeply upset that we weren't talking about the same thing. :[
@Ghede: ARARARARARARARA!!!

one of the first games I bought during the launch of the SNES. The music score and game play is certainly worth the investment.

@crapsh00t: That's funny, cos on Friday I was bored at work, going through my emulators and started playing R-Type 3 for a few hours.
It's great... I wish we could see some HD re-releases for XBLA/PSNet.... along with a number of other shmups.

How ironic, I just pulled out my SNES to play some R-Type yesterday! Great art, great music, great gameplay.

@Cutriss: Suffice it to say I know some people who would just *die* to have TGL on VC... and as for Legacy of the Wizard/Dragonslayer 4, I'd be down for that.

YES THIS IS AWESOME.
I don't really care about Spelunker having never played it (my Apple II copy was overwritten)...but more importantly, it's a BRØDERBUND game, which, combined with Lode Runner, means that we could also see:
* The Guardian Legend (a Compile game for you shmup fans)
* Legacy of the Wizard
* Deadly Towers (more for the joke value than anything)
* Dusty Diamond's All-Star Softball (I liked this game a lot, for a somewhat kiddy team-sim)
* The Battle of Olympus
* Raid on Bungeling Bay
Sweet.

Seriously? Speleunker? Thats so strange. I've been kind of on a speleunker kick recently, making three speleunker levels with the SSBB map maker.
I remember playing that game a long time ago. It was hard as hell, but i remember enjoying it. I might pick it up.

@TomSkylark: R-Type was full of phallic and sexual symbolism in general.

"weak... sauce..."
god i love that expression...
I hope they release R-Type for the Sega Master System. Remember owning that game and getting furiously pwned. Never got to finishing it.
Wanna finish it just for closure.

@Heavyfuel: I dunno, Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts had quite a few noticeable emulation bugs on the VC. Well, noticeable to me anyway since I spent so many hours (days?) playing the same sections over and over because it was so hard.

Super R-Type is one of my favorite SHMUPS. It also features one of the best video game soundtracks ever.

@futurebiblehero: As much as I've long got over complaining about use of the ugly term 'shmup', I for one still like to use the term 'shooter' 'cause - hey - those assholes and their brothers deserve to be confused, man! ;-)

@metaly: Chill out, you shmup-head. Mother-shmuppin shmupheads coming here, throwing a hissy fit.
Hmm, Shmup does sound like a foreign swear. Possibly Norwegian, or some other Germanic language.

@metaly: Most fans of "shmups" have begrudgingly accepted the term, no matter how stupid it sounds. It especially helps alleviate confusion due to the fact that every asshole and his brother now refers to a game like Halo as a "shooter".

Man, I remember renting Super R-Type years ago at my grocery store. Thing is, I can't recall me liking it or not. I slightly remember thinking it was awesome. Hmm...I just might have to pick this up for nostalgic reasons.

Ah, Super R-Type on the SNES. One of the earliest titles and a classic. Also comes with some of the best music ever made for the console. In fact, I might pick it up just for that :)

@Heavyfuel: Which is why I wish Nintendo would give us at least some, limited access to the emulator itself, most SNES and Genesis emulators on Mac/PC for example give you options to correct slowdown, resolution, etc.
It'll never happen, but it would be nice ;)

I loved Super R-Type! I bought it along with Street Fighter II and Zelda III and played it until my hands bled.
You can't really complain about slowdown in shmups, especially when slowdown is often deliberate in many shmups. I'm not so sure that it's intended in Super R-Type's case, but it'll at least serve as training wheels if you're new to the genre.

The VC versions are usually perfect emulations. That means if there is slow down in the original there will be slow down on the VC.

Lack of checkpoints on this one is actualy a + factor for me. I do like a challenge.

Like this:

Of SNES alone, I have well over 200 videos...

The Wii updates are getting depressing again. =\
Maybe they only have one good WEEK every month. Because this is weaksauce.
I suppose they don't want to spam every awesome title they have all at once, but seriously. Give us one. A classic Squaresoft title, before it became the whore we knows as Squeenix. Or a classic Enix title, much to the same effect.
Or hell, be a rebel. Start releasing the Mother series, to the delight of fanboys everywhere. We don't CARE about the original Smash Bros. Do right by us. Mother 3.
