Sega Asks, "Do You Still Own A Dreamcast?"
Posted by Mike Fahey at 4:00 AM on March 9, 2008
Sega of Japan has been sighted nosing around our Dreamcasts, asking all sorts of questions. Questions like, "Do you still own a Dreamcast?" and "What's its serial number?" They've just updated their Dreamcast.com website with the first question, and clicking on it takes you to a page where you can use your console's serial number to register for a user.dreamcast.com account. After snagging my trusty console from my entertainment center and plugging in the serial and some other pertinent info, I got a simple email confirmation thanking me for registering. What happens next? No clue, but they're planning something.
First they update their Dreamcast trademark to include new terms back in August, and now this. With the tenth anniversary of the console coming up in August, one can't help but wonder what the hell is going on. Re-releasing old games perhaps? Offering really, really extended warranties? All I know is this thing they're doing now needs a massive response, to both show our love for the noisy little console and show Sega that we're ready for whatever Dreamcast lovin' they're willing to toss our way.
UPDATE - I just got my account approved, and now have a relatively useless (myserialnumber)@dreamcast.com Gmail account! Hooray!
SEGA of Japan to update www.Dreamcast.com for 2008! [Sega of America Forums via Sega Nerds - Thanks Sonic_Freak!]

Service seems to be down at the moment. I got a message saying the service temporarily unavailable.
Some claim to have seen a message saying that it was suspended because of the amount of requests.
SEGA, ARE YOU LISTENING?

Question- if it's so bleedin' "obviously fake" why isn't Sega doing anything about it? As it stands it's no-lose for them- if they're really planning to do something more with the Dreamcast then everyone can say "ooh, I knew it" because of the site and they have millions of fans lined uo for it. If they change their minds or decide not to proceed Sega can then wash their hands of it and say "well, that wasn't any of our doing, sorry".

Looks like a fake, quoted from another forum;
"I forgot to to the most basics of basics when looking into this, I didn't check if this site was still hosted by SEGA. So I pinged dreamcast.com and lo' and behold IP 72.29.74.51 was the IP I got. It links to a cPanel set up page. I then pinged SEGA.jp and got the IP 210.174.184.7, SEGA.com: 204.155.67.210, Sonic Team: 202.3.142.231. All SEGA sites are no where near the IP range of dreamcast.com. Running a trace on this IP brings us right back to square one with DimeNoc/dizinc. SEGA.com is run from San Francisco under their own, internal servers. SEGA.jp and Sonicteam.com are run from inside Japan, as you'd expect.
So to sum up, it's a site not on ANY of SEGA's servers, it's supposedly a Japanese site running on a shared server in Orlando, emails set out are from a dizinc email address, uses Gmail as a front for a Dreamcast email address, the site poses as an official website (including copyright marks from SEGA). It's fake, don't use it. If you have used it, as a few of you have, hope this comes to nothing.
Emails sent from dreamcast.com are emails actually sent from a dizinc.com email address, which forwards instantly to DimeNoc. I believe DimeNoc are a hosting company and are actually just the service provider for this scam."

@Karlott: It really isn't as black and white as simply checking the WHOIS information. That can be faked. I can literally change mine to whatever I want. I could, for instance, change my own domain name's information to make it look as though it's registered by Sega, but I won't, as it's illegal and stupid. Honestly, that domain doesn't "still" belong to Sega, because it's only been registered since 2005 through this particular individual/company.
What's important is the server information, as well as how the site is served. I highly doubt that Sega of Japan would host a site on a shared server out of Florida.

Posted 10:33 PM 19/3/08
This is a scam site. SEGA let the domain registration lapse for Dreamcast.com and a scammer bought it, put up some poorly formatted code (just check the source) with convincing images, spammed the link to everyone and tossed a bunch of GoogleAds (which no major site would have) and Sega Direct referral links to make a bunch of quick cash. Sega Direct won't even exist for much longer and Sega wouldn't advertise it on their own site.
On top of that, you can enter any serial number and it will accept it. The site is taking 1000's of valid emails and selling them to spammers. By signing up you are simply signing up for mass amounts of spam. Thankfully the site is 'temporarily down', which hopefully means Sega found out about it and is having it shut down.

Sega have not owned Dreamcast.com for years actually... Check these out:

After several years of owning a broken Dreamcast, I decided to use my birthday money to buy a used one and some games. I was also able to pick up a PAL controller and VMU from play-asia.com's sale, and they work great. With a VGA adapter, I've got it sitting atop my desktop ready to plug into my PC monitory at a moment's notice. I love it.
I'm loving MvC2, as I never owned it, and though I've yet to try it, I also got Skies of Arcadia.

@V1L3: In other words, after having already been killed off by the PS2 once, you think that Sega should try again, only this time the PS2 will have a headstart of ~7 years worth of games on the market?

Well, obviously Sega aren't going to re-enter the hardware market with a serious competitor to the 360/PS3. But there's absolutely no reason that they couldn't modify the original Dreamcast hardware and release it alongside (not against) the Wii.
Nintendo have proven (twice) that consumers will purchase a less powerful system that's being sold at a profit. It began as a safety net for Nintendo, whereby even if they'd only managed to sell a few million units, they'd still be in the black.
Sega could quite easily re-release the Dreamcast at $100-$200, and at that price, it'd be picked up by hardcore gamers and casuals who already own another console.
The market has been split - 360 vs PS3 and Wii vs nobody. Competition abhors a vaccuum. And, frankly, if it isn't Sega, you know damn well it's going to be Apple.

You've all been had, hook line and sinker!
Dreamcast.com is not owned by Sega, a WHOIS may say so, but it's easy to enter false information, the site is NOT on SEGA's servers (SOJ and SOA have dedicated servers in the cities/area where they have their HQs). The actual register form has NO Japanese on it. It has Google Ads. It has a Play-Asia ad, it's hosted on some cheap shared hosting site and the site is only there to harvest people's email addresses, well that's what we all think as there would be no other reason, unless it's one big horrible joke like the Shenmue.com mess.
On multiple forums we're discussing this and we're doing a lot of digging to find out stuff, and it just isn't true. The confirmation mail even comes from shenmue@pass17.dizinc.com! If the confirmations really came from Sega it would come from their domain.

Dreamcast 2 would mean epic fail for SEGA... SEGA doesn't have hardly anything that'd be worth getting on their system unless companies port Wii games to it since some look fit for the Dreamcast unless it's being made like the system isn't a joke. PS2 to Dreamcast ports probably will happen too.

@x3sphere: Your logic is flawed. Companies pay for server hosting half way around the world on a regular basis, for many reasons. And even though the Registrant Whois data can be faked for "privacy", the technical contact data for Brights.jp is most likely genuine. So we can determine a real Japanese company (Brights) is using a very large TLD registrar in Florida.
Why is this odd? Sega stopped making their own platforms to focus on content (games). Why wouldn't they outsource their internet hosting? And if their hired shop is happy using Google Accounts, that's exactly what Google is about. Affordable enterprise solutions.
I'm not saying I believe it's legit or hoax or whatever until Sega issues a statement, but you can't look at a whois record and cry foul. Good scam artists won't be that sloppy, and legit businesses won't give a damn how it looks.

@ErskinPig: Nintendo is one of the worst and most restrictive game companies to have ever existed. Even Sony hasn't been able to match their restrictive policies.
I like their consoles and some of the games, but that doesn't mean I have to ignore the harm they did to the industry.
Regarding MGS4, it has easily passed the 50GB dual layer BR mark. Remember that MGS' space is mostly the audio, or rather, the 7.1 surround sound uncompressed audio. With hundreds of codec calls it easily passes 50GB. A bit of compression could squeeze it to a smaller format (say, DVD9), but they were correct in saying they passed 50GB.

@ErskinPig: That's nothing. It was so easy for a while. They were like $50 bucks at Best Buy, I bought one for every one I knew that wanted one. Sometime I would find an eBay lot that had one or two games I wanted with the system and it would be cheeper than buying them separately. I ended up with eight dreamcast that way. Now I am down to just two, every time I find someone interested I would just give them one. Spread the Love!

No, they have your email address, and I'm guessing a password that you entered for your new "dreamcast account".
They can simply sell e-mail addresses gathered, or try out the password for your current e-mail address to find valuable information like other account passwords and such.
I never got to see the sign up page, but they could've asked for your name, address, phone number or any other information that could be SOLD.

Price was not the main factor, it's the controller. If price was the main case, the DC and GC would've obliterated the more expensive PS2 and Xbox.
On the post itself, this is bogus and the chances of Sega reviving the nearly 10 year old console in some way with the competition out there is zero.

@dowingba: Dunno, the Wii has shown that a cheap console can steal the show. The big two (Sony / Microsoft) seem to be more concerned with convergence, which results in me using my PS3 mainly to play movies, play a bit on the XBOX 360 (and Dreamcast).
I haven't bought a Wii yet, though I AM tempted I must admit.
Sega could probably update the Dreamcast to compete with the Wii, aim it at casual gamers with short, fun games (ironically enough I have lately played more in the XBOX Live Arcade than anywhere else).
Now if they could revive the Registration Process I may actually get into the fun.

@ErskinPig: Man you do not know your history. Ever heard of the MSX 1/2. It was a unified computer platform developed by Microsoft and other companies (Sony made their own model as well) that came out even better Nintendo got into the home console market. The first two Metal Gear games were released for this platform.
It's funny that the topic of a unified gaming platform is a hot topic now, when Microsoft was doing this (although it was a unified PC, not just for gaming, although look at the PS3... dunno if it's a gaming platform to many - and this was almost 30 years ago).

@exo: Yes, my parents did buy all of the consoles I played. For a while, at least. Actually, up until I got my Gamecube.
Then, through multiple break ins, I lost all of them (except the NES). So, for the past few years I've went back and rebought every console my family owned or bought me because, well, I wanted them back.
I always seem to get money randomly, so it's been a long, drawn out process. I'm almost back to owning every console we/I lost, except the Gamecube. Everything PS1 and back I was able to find relatively cheap, but once I got back up to the last generation's consoles I hit a roadblock of never having enough money. A job helped - the last one I got back was my beloved Dreamcast.
Just have to get a Gamecube now.. well, now that I have a Wii, I may just not rebuy it..

@dowingba:Actually, XBOX 1 used 4 gb DVD's, while the XBOX 360 uses dual layer DVD-9 discs. The 360 disc's hold roughly 7.5 gigabytes of game data after security files, RCE are taken into account.
Thus, the same medium yes, but a different format of said medium.
Or something like that.
Either way, FUCK YEAH DreamCast! It looks like Sega has netted so many requests for accounts, that they are temporarily suspending the service.
I think Nintendo has proven that there is a new market out there. Who's to say that they wouldn't be looking at this as a way to poke there heads out there with their Sega brand as if to say:
"Hey...remember us? Remember how Sega does what Nintendon't?"
And how could someone within Sega (or Sony or Microsoft), not see that the Wii market is so successful because it's literally been the Wild West of consoles this cycle. Their market is fresh to gaming for the most part, and the Wii does so well because it's the only console of it's kind out there. This has lead to the console being sold out consistently for over a year now.
HOW could someone in the industry not be designing a home console in the same style as the Wii? And HOW could Sega not be the one's doing it? Just like Nintendo, they have a stable of established franchises, and one flagship character that is as recognizable as Mario.
If I were behind the wheel of any console manufacturer at the moment, I would have to be proposing the idea at the very least.
Also, wouldn't it ALSO be feasable for Sony to see the same success as the Wii be redesigning the PS2, introducing a motion controller similar to the Wii remote, and bringing out a line of games that will work well with the Wii crowd.
It's almost as if everyone in the industry is just allowing Nintendo to run away with an entire market with no competition whatsoever.

@ErskinPig:
Blu-Ray is merely a high-capacity storage format that allows for more game/movie/whatever content in a single piece of media. Sooner or later, no matter who'd have created it, the world would progress to a larger storage format, whether magnetic media or otherwise. Plus, more storage doesn't have to mean better graphics-- it can mean more vehicles, a larger world map, a longer story-- more of anything, really.
The same thing could be said about the use of CD's in the Sega CD, which was basically more storage for the Genesis, along with some planar texture manipulation comparable to the SNES's 'Mode 7.' Yes it was optional, but that led to little development for the device, resulting in few games actually utilizing the storage to its full potential.
As for non-games companies making game hardware? The Coleco in "Colecovision" meant Colorado Leather Company. And that was a great system!
A quick note about Nintendo focusing on gamers... They've put their focus on the casual and not the core audience, with some irritating end results... They've excluded voice and even free text chat from Mario Kart Wii, presumably to avoid and objectionable content online. I love my Wii, but it could be so much more than what Nintendo is doing with it.
All I'm saying here is that every company has an agenda, and that's to make money. They've all screwed at least one consumer over in some way, shape or form at some time.

Sega doesn't have a chance building a console up against the biggest hugest corporations such as Nintento, Microsoft and Sony. They should EMULATE dreamcast with an emulator and get MASSIVE royalties from offering the emulator downloader on xbox and playstation live. Before you know it discs are being re-bought online (such as ebay) and sega will make additional money off the virtual copies available on the console's own game downloading services. This can keep dreamcast alive and well and give sony extra subsidaries, hopefully to make a sonic adventure 3 (I'm sure anyone would agree with me that Sonic adventure 2 was the last best sonic game).

Sony own Blu-ray. It's a proprietary format. Jeez...

@Heiae: Your 17 and you've had every console since the NES eh? Considering the NES was already out the door when you were born it sounds like your PARENTS have owned every console since the NES - not you. Thats like my 8 year old claiming she has had every console since the Magnovox Odyssey just because I have them.
Besides, at 17 your parents have been buying them all anyways unless your friggin Doogie Howser.

I have both a Japanese and an American Dreamcast, they have none working controller ports, but they both gave me equally enough times of joy. I have just have to find them for the registration.

@ErskinPig: I'm not failing at anything here. please tell me how this is different from DVDs in ps2. dreamcast had GD-Roms, that didn't hold that much data, yet all last gen systems after used DVD, do you see this as not making gameing better in any shape or form? and again 360 has already had multi disk games come out, so it proves its a lot more beyond just having potential for higher res textures.
May I remind you that people also said DVD wasn't necessary when ps2 came out, and they said it made the system to expensive, yet dvd became industry standerd did it not? while on the subject id also like to point out how that argument for being too expensive because of blue ray is bullshit too. look at whats in the ps3 and then whats in 360 (which mind you has no next gen optical format built in) and you'd see ps3 has a lot more built in that otherwise costs extra to have on xbox.
the last bit makes me have to laugh at you, you cant bothered to say why cause you have no good reasons. fact is Microsoft and Sony do have their own agendas, but since they have to compete against each other they have to also fight over giving the customer better choices and i hardly see how you can spin that in a bad light

@ErskinPig: The SNES cartridge had more space than the NES cartridge. The N64 cartridge had more space than the SNES cartridge. The Gamecube disc had more space than the N64 cartridge. The Wii disc has more space than the Gamecube disc. The Playstation 2 disc had more space than the Playstation 1 disc. And the Playstation 3 disc has more space than the Playstation 2 disc. Are you seeing a pattern here?
The 360 disc has the same amount of space as the Xbox disc.
I'm not saying games necessarily need the Blu-Ray yet but it was a perfectly logical decision on Sony's part.

I ran downstairs to unhook my launch day dreamcast from my rig. (Note: empty spot in rig where 14 month old 360 would be if it wasn't red ringed right now!) Ran back upstairs only to find the site no longer working due to overload! Damn! Sonic speed wanning in later years. My hope is for a system supporting new cheeper games, a company supported hombrew market, releasing old games AND making an add on Hard Drive/Broadband adapter! This will work I tell ya.

@kommanderk: You're obviously failing to see the bigger picture.
Blu-ray is not necessary for games at this stage and is not helping make them better in any way shape or form. The graphics on PS3 are not (significantly) better than the 360 which is still running on DVD. Even if you account for the potential for higher res textures etc that can fit on the blu-ray disk, the PS3 has neither the memory nor the bandwidth required to process them so it's irrelevant.
Blu-ray is in PS3 for reasons completely outside of gaming which I simply cannot be bothered to explain to you. As a result, it's pushed the price up considerably and has added nothing to gamers.

@ErskinPig: why would it be optional the games are on plu ray, and seeing as some games are filling them up already, and that 360 games have already come on multidisks, whats your point exactly? how is it not a worthy addition, much like dvd was to ps2/ technology has to step forward sooner or later, stop being a baby about it
