Sega Korea Is Gone, That's It, Bye Bye
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 7:00 PM on March 31, 2008
Further proof that Sega Sammy is going through rough financial times? As of last Friday, SEGA subsidiary, Sega Korea Ltd. is no more. According to SEGA, "The said dissolution will have not significant impact on the Company's consolidated operating results." What about Sega Korea employees? They're shit outta luck. This comes hot on the heels of Sammy Europe Limited closing late last month and abandoning plans for a Sega Sammy amusement park in Yokohama. Last year, the company lost approximately $US 250 million, laid off 400 employees and shuttered over 100 arcades. Not a very good year.
Bye Bye Sega Korea [Sega Nerds]

@Slaughtertron9000: Rare isn't that hot anymore. Of course, there is quite some potential for VC titles, but the company itself needs a wake up call even if they manage to take them back from Microsoft.
But I can only agree on Sonic. They're rushing out titles, but there isn't a solid base around anymore like in Mario's case. Not to mention that these titles are being developed by seperate teams that have the time to polish. There has only been one Mario platformer per console since the N64, same for Mario Kart. Not so for Mario Party, but even those are solid games, if a bit samey between installments.
Not sure if Nintendo really needs Sega, though... they have enough strong brands on their own, more than anyone else.

I wouldn't release any consoles in korea honestly.
We are stuck only on Winning and SC.
I have maybe met one person during my entire time in Korea that carried a PS2.
I don't think any highschool kids play console games anyways, too busy going to school 12 hours a day.
Its funny, I got into console gaming with Circus and Michael Jackson for Sega in around when I was 5 in Korea. Yea, my neighbor was filthy filthy rich.

Hopefully they can make some money by porting over their classics to the Wii and maybe make games which are interesting again. For some reason everyone is trying to copy the Nintendo model of putting their flagship character into EVERY SINGLE TITLE CONCEIVABLE. The only reason that works for Mario is that Nintendo makes fun games that capture a new aspect we hadn't thought of (Paper Mario) or it expands the world through new genres (Strikers, Mario Party).
If they made more games with Sonic, that might be okay but seriously, they are about ready to just fold and start making really shitty ports of Sonic like "Sonic Knitting" or "Sonic Sailing!" just so they can enough money to lay more people off.
If there is one company Nintendo just needs to buy and make the family complete, it would be Rare. But if it can afford two companies, get Sega too.

@Replica23: A lot of folks think about that too.
The only problem is I wonder how much of the original teams behind those games are even still left within the company itself.
Granted though yes if they did revive the old GOOD series $$$ would start rolling in again.
But alas common sense does not exist in the world of business.

I think Sega needs to refocus its efforts on more compilations and ports of classic games, especially those from the Dreamcast and Saturn. I think there is a market for both on the PS2..
Alright I can dream can I not? :(

@ErskinPig: Harsh but deserved. Seriously though, Sega makes dropping the ball look like an Olympic sport, and they've been winning the gold for years. It's bad enough that they can't come up with a decent new franchise to save their ass, but with as many really solid series they could revisit to pull themselves out of the hole, it's amazing they continue to do as poorly as they have been. And I'm sure they're pointing the finger of blame at someone else the whole time.

too bad sega hasnt MADE anything in years. they just publish crap by western devs and a new sonic every year. not trying to hate, but condemned, viking, universe at war, full auto, and rome - total war arent SEGA. they dont even sound like a line up of sega games. i mean.. if they were printing money nintendo style after shifting their focus to western developers, then id be quiet, because i know theyre businessmen and not gamers. but hey look theyre still losing money. frickin idiots.

Fucking exactly. I hope whoever made that statement gets AIDS. Too harsh? OK, I hope THEY lose their fucking job, then let em speak about how THAT won't have a significant impact on blah fucking blah.
Stuff like that pisses me off, in case you couldn't tell.

Sega Sammy's not doing well? Even with the billions of versions of Guilty Gear XX they've been having a hand in publishing? Time for them to gently nudge Arc System Works into finally getting XXX out the door.

Arcades have completely disappeared from Finland. There are still a few arcade machines at cinemas but real arcades are gone. I was in China and I was able to find one arcade in Xi'an and it happened to be right next to my hotel. I didn't spot any in Beijing but that city too massive.

@snowlock: There are some good ones in the Seattle/Bellevue, WA area (Gameworks, Illusions), as well as a pretty cool nickel arcade/theater in Portland, OR. Our local mall has one, but I don't know how much longer it will last. Other than those though, the days of the arcade are dying. I think it's a world-wide thing though. Plugging $0.50 or more (usually $1.00) into a game for a few minutes playtime isn't really reasonable for consumers, and anything less is financial suicide for the arcade.

arcades are nearly extinct in the us, as far as i can tell.
on vacation in phoenix, i went to a gameworks and it was very busy.
the cards have the sega logo on the back of them, so i'm guessing they run them.
great place; huge arcade bottom floor, restaurant/bar top floor.
there goes all hopes of one opening around here.

Sega as a whole has been a shadow of it's former self for some time now (that's always been a given). Everyone knows that. Their main net for income as of late has been from rereleasing oldschool classics on the next gens. Really don't think they're going to be around for much longer (without being bought out). I give them three years tops.
Sad, because they do tend to publish some decent titles from time to time.

@Mokai:
They are- it's called Blazblue.
What they really need to do is quit alienating people when they buy gaming franchises. What they did to the Total War series- they actually screwed the franchise more then EA did- and that says something.
If it wasn't for VF series, they'd be on my boycott list.

I'm kinda confused by this. Mario and Sonic at the Olympics, The Club, and Universe at War were all great games that I assume did moderately well. I have a hard time seeing how Sega is going anywhere but up in their status. Perhaps they're trying to maximize these profits?

@Brian Ashcraft: Very true, with Sammy being a HUGE pachinko company, and of course, we remember the legacy of SEGA Corporation (Former SEGA Enterprises.)
That being said, I am at a loss to see how the Sega Sammy merger a few years back had actually helped SEGA Corporation. Then again, I also wondered how effective were the restructuring of their AM departments were. It just seemed like alot more division within their ranks IMHO...
